The present paper is concerned with the optimal control and/or design of symmetric and antisymmetric composite laminate with two piezoelectric layers bonded to the opposite surfaces of the laminate, and placed symmetrically with respect to the middle plane. For the optimal control problem, Liapunov-Bellman theory is used to minimize the dynamic response of the laminate. The dynamic response of the laminate comprises a weight sum of the control objective (the total vibrational energy) and a penalty functional including the control force. Simultaneously with the active control, thicknesses and the orientation angles of layers are taken as design variables to achieve optimum design. The formulation is based on various plate theories for various boundary conditions. Explicit solutions for the control function and controlled deflections are obtained in forms of double series. Numerical results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control and design mechanism, and to investigate the effects of various laminate parameters on the control and design process.

The response time characteristic of low voltage liquid crystals (LCs) is investigated and a new simulator for low voltage LCs is proposed. In order to enable low voltage operation, it is important to minimize Vth of LCs and variation of pixel voltage caused by dynamic capacitance operation of LC Display. Because dynamic capacitance variation is much larger for low voltage LC operation compared to that of conventional LC material, it is necessary to make a better model for dynamic capacitance operation. A proposed minimizing Vth of LCs and variation of pixel voltage study results through a new constant charge model improve response characteristics for low voltage LCs operation.
Structural damage and moving load identification are the two aspects of structural system identification. However, they universally coexist in the damaged structures subject to unknown moving load. This paper proposed a dynamic response sensitivity-based model updating method to simultaneously identify the structural damage and moving force. The moving force which is equivalent as the nodal force of the structure can be expressed as a series of orthogonal polynomial. Based on the system Markov parameters by the state space method, the dynamic response and the dynamic response derivatives with respect to the force parameters and elemental variations are analytically derived. Afterwards, the damage and force parameters are obtained by minimizing the difference between measured and analytical response in the sensitivity-based updating procedure. A numerical example for a simply supported beam under the moving load is employed to verify the accuracy of the proposed method.
The spectral representation method is a quick and versatile tool for the generation of spatially variable, response-spectrum-compatible simulations to be used in the nonlinear seismic response evaluation of extended structures, such as bridges. However, just as recorded data, these simulated accelerations require processing, but, unlike recorded data, the reasons for their processing are purely numerical. Hence, the criteria for the processing of acceleration simulations need to be tied to the effect of processing on the structural response. This paper presents a framework for processing acceleration simulations that is based on seismological approaches for processing recorded data, but establishes the corner frequency of the high-pass filter by minimizing the effect of processing on the response of the structural system, for the response evaluation of which the ground motions were generated. The proposed two-step criterion selects the filter corner frequency by considering both the dynamic and the pseudo-static response of the systems. First, it ensures that the linear/nonlinear dynamic structural response induced by the processed simulations captures the characteristics of the system's dynamic response caused by the unprocessed simulations, the frequency content of which is fully compatible with the target response spectrum. Second, it examines the adequacy of the selected estimate for the filter corner frequency by evaluating the pseudo-static response of the system subjected to spatially variable excitations. It is noted that the first step of this two-fold criterion suffices for the establishment of the corner frequency for the processing of acceleration time series generated at a single ground-surface location to be used in the seismic response evaluation of, e.g. a building structure. Furthermore, the concept also applies for the processing of acceleration time series generated by means of any approach that does not provide physical considerations for the selection of the corner frequency of the high-pass filter.
This paper presents the semi-analytical development of the dynamic instability behavior and the dynamic response of functionally graded (FG) cylindrical shallow shell panel subjected to different type of periodic axial compression. First, in prebuckling analysis, the stresses distribution within the panels are determined for respective loading type and these stresses are used to study the dynamic instability behavior and the dynamic response. The prebuckling stresses within the shell panel are the same as applied in-plane edge loading for the case of uniform and linearly varying loadings. However, this is not true for the case of parabolic loadings. The parabolic edge loading produces all the stresses (${\sigma}_{xx}$, ${\sigma}_{yy}$ and ${\tau}_{xy}$) within the FG cylindrical panel. These stresses are evaluated by minimizing the membrane energy via Ritz method. Using these stresses the partial differential equations of FG cylindrical panel are formulated by applying Hamilton's principal assuming higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) and von-$K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ non-linearity. The non-linear governing partial differential equations are converted into a set of Mathieu-Hill equations via Galerkin's method. Bolotin method is adopted to trace the boundaries of instability regions. The linear and non-linear dynamic responses in stable and unstable region are plotted to know the characteristics of instability regions of FG cylindrical panel. Moreover, the non-linear frequency-amplitude responses are obtained using Incremental Harmonic Balance (IHB) method.

The floating ring seal is often used in the turbopump (TP) unit of liquid rocket engine (LRE) owing to its inherent ability of minimizing the leakage flow and superior dynamic characteristics as well. This paper describes the test results concerned with the lock-up and dynamic characteristics of the floating ring seals in the turbopump. The characteristics of the floating ring seals were extracted from the frequency response function (FRF) by instrumental variable method. The experiment was tested at 7.0MPa and 0-24,800 rpm. And the test results were introduced about the dynamic characteristics of floating ring seal related with the eccentricity and attitude angle.
The dynamic performance of air foil bearings relies on a coupling between a thin air film and an elastic foil structure. A number of successful analytical techniques to predict dynamic performance have been developed. However, the evaluation of its dynamic characteristic is still not enough because of the mechanical complexity of the foil structure and strong nonlinear behavior of friction force. This work presents a nonlinear transient analysis method to predict dynamic performance of foil bearings. In this method, time dependent Reynolds equation is used to calculate pressure distribution and a finite element method is used to model the bump foil structure. The analysis is treated with a direct implicit integration technique that can handle nonlinear problems and the stick-slip algorithm is used to consider friction force. Using this method the response to the mass unbalance excitation is investigated for various design parameters and operating conditions. The results of analysis show that foil bearing is very effective on the restriction of vibration at the resonance frequency compared to the rigid surface bearings and the effectiveness depends on the operating conditions, static load and a amount of mass unbalance. In addition, there exist optimum values of friction coefficient, bump foil stiffness and number of circumferential slit with regards to minimizing dynamic response at the resonance frequency. These optimum values are system dependent.
An approximate analysis is presented for multi-story setback buildings subjected to ground motions. Setback buildings with mass and stiffness discontinuities are common in modern architecture and quite often they are asymmetric in plan. The proposed analysis provides basic dynamic data (frequencies and peak values of base resultant forces) and furthermore an overview of the building response during a ground excitation. The method is based on the concept of the equivalent single story system, which has been introduced by the author in earlier papers for assessing the response of uniform in height buildings. As basic quantities of the dynamic response of elastic setback buildings can be derived by analyzing simple systems, a structural layout of minimum elastic rotational response can be easily constructed. The behavior of such structural configurations, which is basically translational into the elastic phase, is also examined into the post elastic phase when the strength assignment of the various bents is based on a planar static analysis under a set of lateral forces simulating an equivalent 'seismic loading'. It is demonstrated that the almost concurrent yielding of all resisting elements preserves the translational response, attained at the end of the elastic phase, to the post elastic one.

In this study, we propose the method of optimally selecting material of front pillar (A-pillar) and package tray for minimizing weight while satisfying vehicle requirements on static stiffness and dynamic stiffness. First, we formulate a material selection optimization problem. Next, we establish the CAE procedure of evaluating static stiffness and dynamic stiffness. Then, to enhance the efficiency of design work, we integrate and automate the established CAE procedure using a commercial process integration and design optimization (PIDO) tool, PIAnO. For effective optimization, we adopt the approach of metamodel based approximate optimization. As a sampling method, an orthogonal array (OA) is used for selecting sampling points. The response values are evaluated at the sampling points and then these response values are used to generate a metamodel of each response using the radial basis function regression (RBFr). Using the RBFr models, optimization is carried out an evolutionary algorithm that can handle discrete design variables. Material optimization result reveals that the weight is reduced by 49.8% while satisfying all the design constraints.
This paper presents methods for dynamic stall control utilizing an optimization approach. Unsteady aerodynamic sensitivity code is developed using a direct diffentiation method from a discrete two-dimensional unsteady compressible Navier-Stokes code including a two-equation turbulence model. Dynamic stall control is conducted by minimizing an objective function defined at an instant instead of integrating a response for a period of time. Unsteady sensitivity derivative of the objective function is calculated by the sensitivity code, and optimization is conducted using a linear line search method at every physical time level. Examples of dynamic stall control utilizing airfoils nose radius or maximum thickness variation show very satisfactory results.
