Chemical composition, crystal structure, refractive index, specific gravity, color, and luster were studied fur pyrope-almandine series garnets. The main coloring agents determining the reddish or brownish garnets were also investigated. It was also examined if there is any relationship between mineralogical properties with respect to the various chemical compositions in the solid solution, in the hope to figure out the existing classification values of R.I. and S.G. using gem- testing facilities to distinguish pyrope from almadine. It was found that 17 out of the 24 specimens belong to pyrope and the rest almandine. R.I. of pyrope goes up to 1.77 and that of almandine is higher than the value.5.5. of pyrope reaches to 3.88 and that of almandine is greater than the value of pyrope. X-ray diffraction data revealed that pyrope-almandine garnets are isometric with space group Ia3d, and also show that the variation of cell parameters are not significant enough to parallel with the chemical compositions of the series. R.I. and S.G. increase with FeO content. Fe and Mn are most responsible to the red-purple and orange coloration of the specimens, respectively. Both zircon and rutile crystals are most common inclusions in the reddish stones.
Al-pillared clay was synthesized by constructing pillars of aluminum oxides at the interlayer of montmorillonite in bentonite. XRD, DTA and chemical analyses of Al-pillared clay were performed to examine mineralogical properties. Batch adsorption experiments were also conducted to determine the adsorption properties of this synthesized clay for phosphate ions. XRD analyses showed that the interlayer space of Al-pillared clay expanded to 18.03 $\AA$ at room temperature and shifted to $17 \AA$ after heating to $550^{\circ}C$. A small change in interlayer space after heating indicates high thermal stability. The interlayer expansion by glycerol was also very small. From DTA analyses, pillared clay showed the characteristic endothermic peaks at 270 and $420^{\circ}C$ , which might be caused by dehydration in framework of pillars between interlayers. Adsorption experiment revealed that Al-pillared clay had an excellent adsorption capacity to the phosphate ions, whereas montmorillonite had very low adsorption capacity to phosphate ions. In phosphate solution concentration up to 300 mg/L, 2 g of pillared clay could uptake almost 100% of phosphate ions from 20 mL of solution. After heat treatment of the phosphate adsorbed pillared clay at 50$0^{\circ}C$ to remove phosphate, the calcined pillared clay could adsorb phosphate ions with a little decreased adsorption efficiency. This fact indicates that Al-pillared clay can be recycled for the adsorption of phosphate ions.
For various types of the Pungchon limestone, diverse mineral characters of the limestone including their size and morphology are investigated by using of ELS and SEM to examine the possibility of application as fillers to paper industry. Also, the measurement of zeta potential and the evaluation of coagulation properties in calcite suspension was made for fine powders of the limestone to examine the applicability and efficiency in wet-papermaking process. Fine powder of the Pungchon lime-stone, largely controlled by original mineral characters of ore in mineralogical aspects, exhibits some-what different trend in particle morphology according to ore types, and thereby, the size distribution, zeta potential and coagulation properties also become different. The examined whiteness, brightness, opacity and sheet strength in hand sheet also show remarkable differences according to ore types. These are seemed to be basically due to the results of combined effects of whiteness, site distribution, refractive index, and morphology of the limestone powder on the properties of hand sheet. Considering the investigated results, all types of the Pungchon limestone appear to be sufficiently applicable to paper industry. Especially, the mega-crystalline calcite type is evaluated to be overall suitable for the purpose of paper industry due to the higher values in whiteness and brightness. In addition the fine powder of micro-crystalline calcite type is assessed particularly to have a good quality in sheet strength by virtue of irregular particle shape.

Jeju island is composed mainly of volcanic rocks such as basalts, trachytic andesites, tracytes, and sedimentary rocks. About 80% of Jeju soils are classified as Andisols. The amount of annual precipitation in Jeju island is about 1872mm, which is 1.5 times the annual precipitation of south Korea. There is a significant difference In amount of precipitation with regions even within Jeju island. In study area, the annual amount of rainfall is about 1280mm, the lowest in Jeju island while south part of the island has the annual precipitation of 2056mm, though they are only tens of kilometers apart. The parent materials of soils in study area are pyroclastic rocks and tuffs. The soils of non-andic properties have developed in this area since pedogenic process of pyroclastic materials is strongly influenced by climatic factor, especially precipitation. In order to investigate the mineralogical characteristics of soils, X-ray analysis for <0.2 and 2-0.2$\mu\textrm{m}$ size fractions was performed with ethylene glycol solvation, K-, Mg-saturation, heat treatment(110, 330, 550$^{\circ}C$). Acid-oxalate and DCB(sodium hydrosulfite, sodium citrate, sodium bicarbonate) dissolution method was used to assess tile total amounts or Al, si, and hydroxy interlayer or 2:1 layer silicates. XRD was also applied for samples treated with DCB only and DCB-oxalate sequentially. XRD patterns showed that 2:1 and 1:1 layer silicates were found, which are different from soils of Andisols. Vermiculite, chlorite, hydroxy interlayered minreals, and interstratified minerals(vermiculite/chlorite) were observed in 2-0.2$\mu\textrm{m}$ size fractions. After DCB treatments, ethylene glycolated samples with Mg-saturation showed expanded d-spacing, suggesting the possibility of hydroxy interlayered minerals. The amounts of hydroxy interlayered minerals increased in surface soil. Unlike Andisols, short range ordered minerals such as allophane, imogolite and gibbsite were hardly found. Mica and kaolinte existed in small amounts. Results are summarized in Fig 1 and Fig. 2.
The sericite ore is formed by the hydrothermal alteration of rhyodacitic welded tuff. The alteration zone of the host rock can be classified into four types based on the mineral assemblages ; sericite, quartz-sericite, silicified and propylite zone. The sericite ore mainly occurs as vein types and fault clay along the fault plane in the quartz-sericite zone. Mineral components of the sericite ore are mainly sericite with minor diaspore, corundum and pyrite. The sericitic porcelaineous ore is mainly composed of quartz and sericite. Accessory minerals are muscovite, diaspore, sphene, corundum, pyrite, iron-oxides and etc. The chemical compositions of K2O, Al2O3, and ignition loss in the sericite ore increase largely than that of the host rock, while the compositions of SiO2, Na2O and Fe2O3 decrease. XRD patterns of the heat-treated sericite ores show the formation of mullite at $1,200^{\circ}C$. and the diaspore-bearing sericite ore forms mullite and corundum at $1,200^{\circ}C$. The differential thermal analysis of the sericite ores show small endothermic peak at 645~668$^{\circ}C$. and the diaspore-bearing sericite ore shows a strong endothermic peak at $517^{\circ}C$. It indicates that the decomposition of diaspore appear at lower temperature than that of sericite. The thermal expansivity of the sericite ores show the similar pattern. The sericite ores show the thermal expansivity of 3.3~4.7% at 900$^{\circ}C$ and 0.39~0.75% at 1,20$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. DTA-TG curves of the sericite ores show closely relations with the thermal expansivity.
Characteristics of wet flue gas desulfurization and in-furnace desulfurization of domestic and overseas limestone with different crystallinity and crystalline size are studied in this article. Properties of desulfurization were evaluated in relation to physicochemical/ mineralogical characteristics, degree of pore formation for different calcination temperatures and TNC(total neutralizing capability). TNC of domestic high crystalline limestone was lower than that of overseas one. On the other hand, the porosity after calcination was shown to be relatively high for domestic limestone, which had high initial rates of desulfurization reactions in-furnace. Based on low pore formation and porosity with high TNC of crystalline high-Ca limestones compared to macrocrystalline ones, the former are preferred for wet desulfurization processes.

Significant amount of bottom ash has been stored in the pond site of Hadong coal power plant located at southeast region of Korea. In order to address strong environmental regulation that is going to be enforced in the near future, it is necessary to consume waste bottom ash stored in the pond site in a sustainable manner. In this research, the chemical and mineral characteristics of various sized bottom ash samples from Hadong coal power plant were analyzed using XRF, XRD, and particle size analyzer. According to the experimental results, the chemical compositions of bottom ash was slightly changed in terms of Al and Fe content. As the size of the bottom ash increased, cristobalite was observed as a result of crystallization. The mineralogical composition and its size distribution of powder type bottom ash indicated that significant amount of fly ash is included together with small sized bottom ash.
Dry-based processes such as crushing, milling, sieving, magnetic and gravity separation were employed in order to investigate the purification characteristics of bentonite. The CECs of Gampo 13 and 35 bentonites were estimated at 88.3 and 93.3 meq/100 g and the samples contained quartz and feldspar as impurity minerals. According to the physical properties of constituent minerals of bentonite, the purification techniques were adopted to enhance the grade of montmorillonite High grade of montmorillonite could be obtained by the combination of each process. Consequently, the recovery of final products of Gampo 13 and 35 bentonite were 68.6 and 49.5%, and the CECs of them were 96.9 and 109.6 meq/100 g, respectively.
FORTRAN program PHYLS was developed to model the structures of 2:1 1M and 2M1 phyllosilicates on the basis of geometrical analyses. Input to PHYLS requires the chemical composition and d(001) spacing of the mineral. The output from PHYLS consists of the coordinates of the crystallographically independent sites in the unit cell, and such structural parameters as the cell dimensions, interaxial angle, cell volume, interatomic distances, and deformation angles of the polyhedra. PHYLS can generate these structural details according to the user's choice of space group and cation configuration. User can choose one of such space groups as C2/m, C2,and C2/c and such cation configurations as random and ordered tetrachedral/octahedral cation configurations. PHYLS simulated the structures of dioctahedral and trioctahedral phyllosilicates having random tetrahedral cation configuration fairly close to the reported experimentally determined structures. In contrast, the simulated structures for ordered tetrahedral cation configurations showed greater deviation from the experimentally determined structures than those for random configurations. However, if the cations were partially ordered and the sizes of the tetrahedra became similar, the simulated PHYLS may be helpful in various investigations on the relationships between structures and physicochemical properties of the phyllosilicates.
Al-pillared montmorillonite was synthesized from Na-saturated montmorillonite which was prepared by ionic substitution from Ca-montmorillonite of the Jabut mine, Gyeongiu City d(001), surface areas, and dehydration and ionic substitution properties have been compared for both Ca-montmorillonite and Al-pillared montmorillonite. d(001) spacings of Ca-montmorillonite and Al-pillared montmorillonite were 15.1 $\AA$ and $18.3\AA$, respectively. Dehydration took place before $350 ^{\circ}C$ in Ca-montmorillonite, whereas linealy up to $550^{\circ}C$ in Al-pillared montmorillonite. BET surface areas are 5~6 times larger in Al-pillared montmorillonite ($192 \m^2$/g) than Camontmorillonite. Ca-montmorilonite shows high selectivity for $Na^{+}$ /, whereas Al-pillared montmorillonite for $Ca^{2+}$ . The former shows decreasing d(001) spacing with increasing substitution of $Na^{+}$ and irregular interstratified structure at high substitution of $Ca^{2+}$ /, whereas the latter shows linear decreasing pattern in d(001) spacing with increasing $Ca^{ 2+}$.
