  • Pyrophyllite, kaolinite, and alunite deposits distributing in Southwestern parts of Cheonnam are classified into three types of minerals assemblages by the results of X-ray diffraction analysis etc. The first mineral assemblages contains pyrophyllite, kaolinite, dickite, quartz, diaspore and/or corundum, the second one contains alunite inseads of corundum, and the third one contains alunite without pyrophyllite and diaspore. It is can be considered that the depoSits which consist mainly of pyrophyllite are formed higher temperature than the other deposits. Judging form the chemical analyses the chemical compositions of hydrothermal solutions acting to the deposits seem to be relatively simple. But the hydrothermal solutions which generated Dogcheon, Jugjcon, Ogmaesan, and Seongsan mine contain rather somewhat higher $K_2O$. The values of the Trace Elements and REE analysis of the host rocks of deposits suggest that the host rocks are these deposits are the last products of magmatic differentiation.

  • Aging of transformer insulating material in natural ester insulating oil is compared to that in conventional transformer oil. Aging of insulating paper and insulating oil have been studied by performing accelerated thermal aging test. Sealed aging test vessels containing cooper, laminated core, Kraft paper and insulating oil(natural oil or mineral oil) were aged at $140^{\circ}C$ for 500, 1000, 1500 and 2000 hours. Insulating oils after aging are investigated with total acid number, breakdown voltage and viscosity. Also, degradation of insulating paper after aging is determined using breakdown voltage and mechanical strength. Accelerated aging studies demonstrate a slower aging rate for natural ester insulating oil compared to the rate for conventional mineral oil.

  • A study was conducted to determine the macromineral status of grazing cattle in three climatic regions of the province of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Soil, forage, blood and rib bone samples were collected within the Western, Central and Eastern regions, respectively, in February-March and August-September of 1987. Calcium and magnesium were not deficient in soil samples. For forages, calcium and phosphorus were deficient for all regions and forage sodium was deficient except for the western region in the dry season. Crude protein was deficient during the dry season. The overall percentage of deficient plasma phosphorus samples was 17 or 23% for the wet and dry seasons, respectively. Based on these analyses, macrominerals most likely deficient in both seasons were phosphorus and calcium in all regions, in addition to sodium in the Central and Eastern regions.

  • X-ray, optical and electron microscope studies exhibit that the amphiboles in anorthositic saprolite from kaolin deposits, located in Suryun-myeon, Seongju-gun, Kyungsangbuk-do, have altered under weathering conditions to smectite, mixed-layer mineral, vermiculite and goethite. In early supergene alteration stage when rock structure is still preserved, smectite occurs as initial weathering product of amphibole. Further weathering leads to the formation of mixed-layer mineral, vermiculite and goethite as indicated by XRD and SEM studies. Scanning electron microscopy studies of amphibole show that the dissolution of amphibole proceeds by selective etching at the surface along weaker zones producing distinct etch pattern, The calcic amphiboles according to electron microprobe analyses, show leaching of the most mobile elements (Mg, Ca and Fe) during alteration.

  • Compositions of methionine-metal chelates have been investigated by FT-IR and XRD studies to elucidate their molecular structures. It was concluded that Copamin and Zincamin contain a high percentage of crystalline products, presumably 2:1 Methionine-Cu or Zn complexes. On the contrary, FT-IR and XRD spectra of Ferramin didn't show any characteristics of the chelate and it was concluded to contain major components of starting $FeSO_4$ and methionine without chelation.

  • This study constructed a 3D geological model for Uggi Nuur Fe-Mn mineralization zone in Mongolia, and the 3D geological distribution is cross-analyzed with magnetic anomaly distribution to figure out relationship between ore zone and subsurface geology. As a result of 4 step 3D modeling procedures including geological cross section, surface modeling, foliation modeling and solid modeling, the geology of the both study area is bordered by faults in NW direction with Munguntessj formation being located in the west side of the fault while Yashill formation is located on the other side of the fault. Moreover, the strike direction of foliation in the both formation shows same directional pattern with the NW faults. The magnetic anomaly distribution reveals that higher anomaly values are concentrated to near the ground surface. The analyses of 3 dimensional distribution between subsurface geology and magnetic anomaly indicates that higher anomaly is mainly distributed over the Munguntessj formation as a elongated lens bodies whereas the magnetic anomaly is evenly found in the both of Munguntessj formation and Yashill formation in the study area 2. It infers that volcanic activities associated mineralization occurred during silurian period, and the mineralized zone is thought to be realigned along the geological structures caused by later stage tectonic activities.

  • This study suggests a conceptual strategy and methodology for the risk assessment of the domestic abandoned mine fillers with fly ash. The fillers are composed of coal fly ash and solidification materials, and contain little toxic substances such as carbonates but also some heavy metals; therefore, those requires a risk assessment. The risk assessment should primarily focus on estimation of the effects to human health both on carcinogen and non-carcinogen aspects. The significant data such as toxicity and partition coefficients can be obtained from the national soil or mine environmental risk assessment guidelines. Accurate risk assessment of heavy metal contamination in the fillers may consume lots of time and efforts through site survey and instrumental analyses, etc. Moreover, it is inefficient to explore all of the factors as concentrations and categories in every heavy metal in the fillers, due to a high variety and complexity. Therefore, implementation of a preliminary risk assessment is suggested by using the literature data and the basic characteristics of the filler samples prior to the detailed risk assessment. Certainly, this presumes a thorough understanding of reliable sample analysis methods, exposure pathways, and relevant physicochemical and biological mechanisms.

  • The mineral contents of domestic and Chinese Sarcodon aspratus were analyzed for comparing the differences in the mineral contents according to the production sites. The mineral contents of 10 domestic and 10 Chinese S. aspratus were analyzed by using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer and an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. The sodium, magnesium, potassium, and calcium contents of domestic S. aspratus were 170.3±44.0 mg/kg, 81.3±20.8 mg/kg, 1,123.8±274.3 mg/kg, and 12.1±4.1 mg/kg, respectively, while those of Chinese S. aspratus were 112.2±40.8 mg/kg, 297.8±20.9 mg/kg, 10,938.4±2,914.1 mg/kg, and 52.5±27.7 mg/kg, respectively. There were no significant differences in the micro mineral contents and hazardous heavy metal contents between domestic and Chinese S. aspratus, while there was a significant difference in the macro mineral contents between domestic and Chinese S. aspratus. Thus, the comparative analyses of the sodium, magnesium, potassium, and calcium contents of many domestic and Chinese S. aspratus are required to determine their production sites in the future.

  • Illite is a common mineral that forms readily from feldspar and mica via hydrothermal alteration and exhibits various characteristics depending on the degree of hydrothermal alteration. To ensure continued mining of high-quality illite ore, it is crucial to understand the illitization. Thus, this study collected ores from two illite ore deposit and their surrounding alteration zones in Yeongdong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, a significant source of illite in the Republic of Korea, to determine the constituent mineral contents and textural characteristics. Polarized light microscopy analyses revealed that the illite ore deposit were highly illitized with little remaining textural characteristics of the parent mica schist, and only some quartz was present. The ore zone contained illite, muscovite, quartz, and feldspar, with illitization primarily occurring around feldspar and quartz. X-ray diffraction analyses identified that the content of illite/muscovite was approximately 50-75 wt.%, with a maximum of 75 wt.%. Additionally, X-ray fluorescence analyses indicated a linear increase in K2O content with increasing illite content, showing the highest correlation among the major components analyzed. It is suggested that the illite in the Yeongdong area results from feldspar and quartz alteration by hydrothermal fluids along the fault, with illitization of feldspar occurring before that of quartz. The results of this study are expected to contribute to the development of high-quality illite ore deposit in Yeongdong, Chungcheongbuk-do.
