The Effect of the Environmental Issue Analysis Instruction on the Decision Making Ability of Middle School Students (환경쟁점분석 수업이 중학생의 의사 결정력에 미치는 효과)

  • This study investigated the effect of the environmental issue analysis instruction on the decision making ability of middle school students. A pretest-posttest control group design was employed. The participants for the research were 288 1st grade male students in middle school in Seoul, the environmental issue analysis lesson group consisted of 142 members and the non-environmental education group consisted of 146 members. The cognitive level of the students were divided into three groups-concrete, transition, formal-as the result of GALT test. Students take issue analysis lessons during 6 weeks, one lesson per a week. Students had studied through worksheets reconstructed and developed by researcher on basis of issue analysis suggested by Ramsey et al. (1997). The results of the research were followings: After lesson for environmental issue analysis, all of the students were improved in decision-making ability regardless of cognitive level (p<.05). Especially, decision-making ability of the transition group students was improved to a high degree. Scores of searching relevant information, generation of alternatives, identification of values for selection criteria, the evaluation of alternatives' merits and demerits, prediction of consequence were increased in experimental group (p<.05). But the ability of selection of alternatives according to value was not reached statistically meaningful improvement. The decision-making ability of the control group students was not improved but ability of selection of alternatives, the evaluation of consequence were increased (p<.05).

  • Researchers who is intereted in Environmental Education have been concentrated on the Environmental subject since it was involved in school curriculum. But the selection percentage of Environmental subject is so low. So. I think Environmental Education researchers should be interested in Environmental Clubs in school because most students can easily take Environmental Education through Environmental Clubs than Environmental subject. The Environmental NGO, H, is interested in Environmental Clubs in school. The NGO held the camp that is called “Teenagers Environmental Club Festival” to encourage the environmental Clubs. I got some significances from the camp. First, Not only the camp but also post-education is required with on/off lines. Second, When the Environmental NGO makes a plan which supports Environmental Clubs in school, you should consider the school level. Third, activities' contents should be composed according to the level of students. Fourth, Students must involved in camp management team. Fifth, Management team which is composed of the NGO's planners, Environmental Education researchers, Environmental Club teachers and students is required.

A Comparison of Questioning Styles in Middle School Environmeotology Textbook (중학교 환경 교과서의 질문방략)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the questioning styles in middle school environmentology textbook In terms of frequency, type, and placement of questions. It was also to analyse and to compare the kinds of scientific inquiry processes elicited by the questions in the topics of textbooks. The instrument was the Textbook Questing Strategies Assessment Instrument (TQSAI) developed the Cooperative Teacher Preparation Project, University of California. The average number of Questions per topic was only 1.09 and the ratio of questions to sentences was 2.5%. Most of questions were in explanatory place(75%). Nearly 90% of experienced questions types were reasoning or application. The frequencies of non-experiential question were higher than those of experiential question. In action, there were much kinds of question-styles.

An Analysis of the Curriculum for School Uniform Recycling Education and the Need for School Uniform Recycling (교복 재활용 필요성과 교복 재활용 교육을 위한 교과과정 분석)

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate the need for school uniform recycling and to review the school uniform recycling-related education. 231 female high school students were asked to answer regarding the wearing state of school uniform and their satisfaction level. 10 subjects in middle school technology/home economy were evaluated. As the result, the students wore 1~2 pieces of school uniform, which showed that it was hard to keep them clean by washing them often. The satisfaction level of school uniform was not high, The lowest item was the price. Therefore, to increase the satisfaction level of the school uniforms and also to increase the sanitary level of the school uniforms, it was advisable to purchase a recycled school uniform at cheaper prices to have an extra set. For a vitalization of the recycled school uniforms, the middle school technology/home economy subjects were reviewed. In the topic of "clothing acquisition plan and purchase", the themes of planned purchase, overconsumption of clothing and environmental pollution were discussed and included preferable behaviors for disposal. The topic of "clothing manufacturing and recycling" listed recycling the clothes that are not worn or exchanging them with neighbors as well as suggesting methods to illicit environment-friendly behaviors and carrying them out. However, some textbooks only briefly explained the methods of recycling and more detailed and practical methods need to be suggested in the curriculum. In addition, the contents regarding the environment in the clothing topic need to be supplemented more and more changes, such as related education plans or data development, are required.   • The purpose of this study was to develop the environmental sensitivity(ES) measurement instrument and to apply for middle school students. The questionnaire was developed to evaluate ES. The developed questionnaire consists of 15 items in 5 categories. Each item of the instrument was developed through the conceptional analysis of the definition of ES. The 5 categories included natural environment, activity at natural environment, artificial environment, environmental pollution, environmental destruction. Data for this study were collected from 397 middle school students including 46 environmental class and 351 non-environmental class students. It was found that the developed instrument to measure ES was valid and reliable. Reliability coefficient, Cronbach $\alpha$ was 0.75. Using the developed instrument of ES, the ES was measured for the students of experimental group to which a inqury-based EE model was applied. The result was that the effect of ES of the students of the experimental group was not statistically significant. Futher research is needed related to the EE model based on the inquiry learning model and measurement of environmental sensitivity.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the problems of housing education in Home Economics and then to present some suggestion for improving the housing education in the middle school and to analyze the problems of housing edcation that was investigated on the recognition and application in real life of housing area subject to male/female students in the middle school. The respondents were 600 boys and girls of middle school. Statistical methods adopted for data analysis were Frequency, Chi-square, t-test, F-test. The major findings were follows: 1. Many students(67.2%) responded that housing of home economics was wholly helpful in the actual life. 2. Many students recognized the necessity for the housing education. They particularly recognized the need about the knowlidge of sanitation and facilities of housing. 3. The degree to which housing education applied in the real life was lower than that to which it was needed. 4. There was a tendency that the more students realized the usefulness of housing education, the more positively they applied it in the real life. 5. The contents that students preferred to be additionally included in housing education were improvement of residential environment, solutions to housing environmental deterioration and pollution, future housing, and housing for the elderly.

  • We investigated the extent of recognition and the rate of class practice on the contents relevant to the environmental education in the units of 'Clothing Life' of the 7th 'Technology-Home Economics' curriculum in Korean middle school teachers. Two hundred sixty teachers, who had taught the units of 'Clothing Life' and responded to the questionnaires by mail from December 2007 to January 2008, were enrolled and each item in the questionnaires was analyzed in this study. Most teachers recognized the serious environmental issues in their residential area resulting in a harmful influence on their lives. Also they exhibited increased practice will such as joining to the environmental organizations and showed high practice of the environmental preservation. They commented relatively high rate of class practice on the contents relevant to the environmental education and enhanced practice of the environmental preservation in all units of 'Clothing Life' of the 7th 'Technology-Home Economics' curriculum except the units of 'Clothing Skill and Dress Clothes' and 'Simple Clothes Making'. Moreover, teachers with higher age and longer teaching career had the higher level of recognition and the greater rate of class practice on the environmental education compared to those without. Teachers should try to raise the students' recognition and practice will on the environmental issues in the class of 'Clothing Life' of the 7th 'Technology-Home Economics' curriculum in Korean middle school.

Perceptions of Korean Science and Social Science Teachers Regarding Teachers/Learning Methods for Environmental Education (환경 교수학습법에 대한 과학과와 사회과 교사들의 인식)

  • To meet the objectives of environmental education, teachers especially have to perceive the importance of environmental education, comprehend various characteristics of teaching/learning methods, and be able to conduct classes by choosing proper teaching/leaming methods in accordance with a specific purpose and educational focus about environmental education. Therefore, it Bs necessary to investigate the current status of Korean environmental education and provide teachers with appropriate environmental teaching/leaming methods. To this end this study aims to examine Korean science teachers'perceptions'on environmental education and the kind of teaching/learning methods which can be utilized in environmental education. Teachers who completed the survey were 135 science teachers from middle and high schools in Seoul, and 126 social science teachers from Kyoungki province. The majors of the science teachers were in physics, chemistry, biology, geology, and earth science. Also, there was one teacher who majored in special education. For social science teachers two majors were common, geography and general sociology. After analysis of the data from the surveys the results are as follows. First, science and social science teachers in middle and high school recognized the necessity of environmental education in school education. Second, most teachers had applied environment related topics to their subject of study occasionally, but they mostly concurred that environment related contents should be included in their textbooks. Third, science teachers agreed that field trip, discussion, and the STS approach were the most proper methods for environmental education, and social science teachers agreed that field trips, inquiry, and discussion were the most appropriate methods for a teaching environment. They realized that they should decide good teaching-learning methods appropriate to the objectives and content needed for effective environmental education as they selected different teaching-learning methods according to detailed environmental objectives and contents in their textbooks.

  • This study analyzed content on education for sustainable development in middle school science curriculum of $6^{th}$, $7^{th}$, 2007-revised and 2009-revised. Analyses criteria were developed based on literature reviews. This study developed 8 criteria such as health, climate change, urbanization and rural development, water, biodiversity and ecosystem, energy, disaster reduction and management. The results showed that 6th middle school science curriculum has 4 criteria, $7^{th}$ has 2 criteria, 2007-revised has 8 criteria, and 2009-revised has 7 criteria. This study suggests the need for developing systemized teaching material on education for sustainable development that can be integrated in the science curriculum by pursuing the following tasks: First, the goal of education for sustainable development and its need should be stated in the science curriculum. Second, the class content, themes, objectives, teaching-learning programs on education for sustainable development should be produced. Third, within science curriculum, the content should deal with perspectives and topics, and learning goal must pursue value education.

  • STEAM education is an effective teaching method to develop self-problem-solving skills through creative thinking. In order to revitalize STEAM education, various program models are being developed recently. The purpose of this study is to develop a STEAM education program based on the project-based learing method that includes the process of solving global environmental problems. The STEAM element was extracted by linking the zero energy house design with the middle school curriculum, and the STEAM education program was developed considering career activities. It was analyzed whether the developed program can improve STEAM core competence and job preparation ability. The education program was conducted for middle school students and the program was evaluated through questionnaires. In order to strengthen the STEAM competency, project-based learning method was applied and it was able to enhance the active problem solving ability of learners. In addition, opportunities for career experience could be provided through career exploration programs and various activities. Through this STEAM education program, it is expected to contribute to cultivating human resources with convergence knowledge and core competency.
