Rain Attenuation over Terrestrial Microwave Links at 18 GHz as Compared with Prediction by ITU-R Model

  • Absorption of microwave radio frequency signal by atmospheric rain is prevalent at frequencies above 10 GHz. This paper presents the studies on rain attenuation at 18 GHz for 3.2 km experimental link between Khumdang (Korea Telecom, KT station) and Icheon (National Radio Research Agency, RRA station). The received signal data for rain attenuation and rain rate were collected at 10 second intervals over a three year periods from 2013 to 2015. Out of several models, the paper present discussion and comparison of ITU-R P.530-16 model, Moupfouma model, Da Silva Mello model along with suitable rain attenuation prediction method. The limitation of research lies on the experimental system that is set up in only one location, however, the preliminary results indicate the application of suitable 1-minute rain attenuation model for specific site. The method provides useful information for microwave engineers and researchers in making decision over the choice of most suitable rain attenuation prediction in terrestrial links.

  • M-type Ba-ferrite(${BaFe}_{12-2X}{Ti}_{X}{Co}_{X}{O}_{19}$)의 ${Fe}^{3+}$ 이온 대신에 A이온의 위치에는 비자성 이온인 ${Ti}^{4+}$을, Me이온은 위치에는 ${Co}^{2+}$을 치환시켜 치환량 x의 변화에 따른 결정자기이방성 감소를 관찰하고, 고주파 대역에서 전파흡수재로서 사용가능 여부를 실험하였다. 치환결과 보자력은 결정자기이방성이 감소함에 따라 급격히 감소하는 경향을 보였으며, 포화자화값은 ${Fe}^{3+}$이온 대신에 비자성인 ${Ti}^{4+}$이온이 치환됨에 따라 거의 직선적으로 감소하였다. 특히, 치환량이 1.2일 때 보자력은 185 Oe로 가장 낮았고, 포화자화는 43.5emu/g의 값을 나타내었다. 반사손실을 계산한 결가 Ti-Co 치환량 0.8일 때 2mm흡수체의 경우 10~16㎓의 대역에서 반사손실-10㏈(90%흡수)이하였으며, 감쇠능의 측정결과 12~16㎓의 대역에서 20㏈(99% 감쇠)로 12~16㎓의 고주파 대역에서 전파흡수재로 사용이 가능함을 예측할 수 있었다.

저농도 페놀수지 주입처리에 의한 평죽판 개발(1) (Development of Compressed-flattened Bamboo Impregnated with Low Molecular Weight PF Resin(1))

  • This study was carried out to develope a new process of flattening bamboo pieces(3 months old) by two steps of utilizing microwave oven and hot press. Internode bamboo pieces were impregnated with low molecular weight phenol formaldehyde resin (PF) under vacuum of 76 cmHg, heated in a household microwave oven in 1 minute, pressed on the temperature of $145^{\circ}C$ by the hot press for 10 minute, and then cooled by the cold press in their flattened form. The physical and mechanical . Properties of compressed flattened bamboo were as follows: 1) PF1(Mw:427) and PF2(Mw:246) sol. met the success of flattening of internode bamboo pieces in both of P. bambusoides and P. nigra var. PF2 showed the more plasticity to flatten the bamboo than PFI. The PF2 sol. with low molecular weight(Mw:246) gave the more weight gain than that of PF1 in the equal concentration. PF1 of 5% (NVC) and PF2 of 10% (NVC) sol. gave the best result for physical and mechanical properties and from a economical view point. 2) The PFI of 5% (NVC) sol. with low molecular weight decreased the water absorption of 62-63% and increased the bending strength (MaR) of 80-90%, compression strength of 43-54%. 3) The PF2 of 10% (NVC) sol. with low molecular weight decreased the water absorption of 56-57% and increased the bending strength (MaR) of 64-86%, compression strength of 39-63%.

적외선과 마이크로파 위성관측에서 유도된 대기물현상 및 대기 열적 상태: 적외선 간섭분광계 (IRIS)와 Microwave Sounding Unit (Hydrometeors and Atmospheric Thermal Structure Derived from the Infrared and Microwave Satellite Observations: Infrared Interferometer Spectrometer (IRIS) and Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU))

  • The infrared and microwave satellite observations have been used to derive the information of hydrometeors (i.e., cloud and precipitation) and atmospheric temperature. The observations were made by the Nimbus-4 Infrared Interferometer Spectrometer (IRIS) in 1970, and by the Microwave Sounding Unit (MSU) during the period 1980-99, which had channel 1~4 (Chl~4). The IRIS, which has a field of view of ~100 km, has been utilized to examine the cirrus and marine stratus clouds. The cirrus and stratus distributions were obtained, respectively, based on the spectral difference in the infrared window region, and the absorption of water vapor and $CO_2$ in the spectral region $870-980cm^{-1}$. The MSU Ch1 data has been used for low tropospheric temperature and hydrometeors, while the Ch2, Ch3 and Ch4, respectively, for the thermal state of midtroposphere, tropopause, and lower stratosphere. The climatic aspects of El Ni$\tilde{n}$o, Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO) and temperature trends over the globe are discussed with the MSU data. This study suggests that the IRIS and MSU data are useful for monitoring the hydrometeors and atmospheric thermal state in climate system.

Improvement of Land Cover / Land Use Classification by Combination of Optical and Microwave Remote Sensing Data

  • Optical and microwave remote sensing data have been widely used in land cover and land use classification. Thanks to the spectral absorption characteristics of ground object in visible and near infrared region, optical data enables to extract different land cover types according to their material composition like water body, vegetation cover or bare land. On the other hand, microwave sensor receives backscatter radiance which contains information on surface roughness, object density and their 3-D structure that are very important complementary information to interpret land use and land cover. Separate use of these data have brought many successful results in practice. However, the accuracy of the land use / land cover established by this methodology still has some problems. One of the way to improve accuracy of the land use / land cover classification is just combination of both optical and microwave data in analysis. In this paper for the research, the author used LANDSAT TM scene 127/45 acquired on October 21, 1992, JERS-1 SAR scene 119/265 acquired on October 27, 1992 and aerial photographs taken on October 21, 1992. The study area has been selected in Hanoi City and surrounding area, Vietnam. This is a flat agricultural area with various land use types as water rice, secondary crops like maize, cassava, vegetables cultivation as cucumber, tomato etc. mixed with human settlement and some manufacture facilities as brick and ceramic factories. The use of only optical or microwave data could result in misclassification among some land use features as settlement and vegetables cultivation using frame stages. By combination of multitemporal JERS-1 SAR and TM data these errors have been eliminated so that accuracy of the final land use / land cover map has been improved. The paper describes a methodology for data combination and presents results achieved by the proposed approach.

Hydride Generation Atomic Absorption Spectrometry를 이용한 석유정제폐수중의 selenium 분석 (Analysis of selenium in oil refinery wastewater by hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry)

  • 본 연구는 수소화물 발생장치가 부착된 원자흡광 광도계 (HG-AAS)를 이용하여 비교적 고농도의 Se을 함유하고 있는 석유정제 폐수의 Se 분석을 위하여 적합한 분석조건을 선정하고자 수행되었다. Se(VI)의 Se(IV)로의 환원 실험에서 폐수량 10 mL, 염산 주입량 10 mL, 가열시간 30분이 최적 환원조건으로 결정되었다. 폐수의 조성성분과 유기물의 농도가 높은 경우에는 Se 회수율이 감소하였다. 따라서 3가지 산분해법 ($HNO_3/HClO_4$ 분해, $KMnO_4$ 분해 및 초단파 산분해)에 의한 유기물, 석유화합물 분해 및 유기성 Se(org.), Se(IV) 산화에 따른 Se 회수율을 검토하였다. 실험결과 산분해전 약 50~80%이었던 Se 회수율은 모든 산분해에서 90%이상이었으며 특히, 초단파 산분해에 의한 Se 회수율이 가장 높은 것으로 나타났다. 그러므로 HG-AAS를 이용한 석유정제 폐수의 Se 분석시에는 초단파 산분해후 염산 처리를 하는 전처리 과정이 가장 적합한 것으로 나타났다.

  • Qualitative enhancement of dwelling life has changing the recognition for the environment friendly wood which is being highlighted for its usage as an interior materials. This trend may prove the excellent performance of wood whose inherent characteristics has its comfortable, mild feeling of material, sound resistance and stabilities and the market of interior woods including floor, moulding and wooden panel as finishing interior materials is growing sustainably. However, since this materials is vulnerable to humidity and flame, waterproofing and flame retarding stability, an essential condition for interior materials, together with maintenance, are the main topics to be resolved. From the above-mentioned results, as a result of waterdrop contact angle, wood absorption volume and water content percentage test and the performance test of the processed materials after flame retardant, though there was some submerging time changes among types of woods for ensuring waterproofing performance improvement but as time passes, similar tendency was noticed to be formulated. As the submerging time is increased, so does the absorption volume and accordingly optimal level of range is judged to be drawn in order to ensure excellent performance, taking optimal economy into consideration. Therefore, it is considered that above-mentioned woods could be utilized for waterproof and flame retardant processed interior materials using uniform microwave and in order to put this technology into practical application, a research by way of diversified performance proving is required to be carried out.

Permalloy를 이용한 이동통신주파수 대역용 박형 전파흡수체의 제조 및 특성 연구 (Absorption Properties of Thin Permalloy-Rubber Absorbers in Mobile Telecommunication Frequency Bands)

  • Permalloy를 30시간 볼밀 한 후 주사전자현미경으로 형상 및 입경을 분석하였으며, 볼밀 가공한 Permalloy의 입자들이 편편한 상을 가짐을 확인하였다. Permalloy를 실리콘 고무와 혼합하여 박형 전파흡수체를 제조하고 Network Analyzer을 이용하여 permalloy-고무 전파흡수체의 재료정수 및 전파흡수특성을 측정하였으며, 그들의 상관 관계를 비교 조사하였다. 가공한 permalloy-고무 복합재료는 높은 복소유전율 및 복소투자율을 가지며 미가공한 permalloy-고무 복합재료 보다 전파흡수 특성이 우수하였다. 또한 전파흡수체 두께에 따라서 정합주파수가 낮은 주파수 대역으로 shift 됨을 알 수 있고, 1.3 mm의 두께로 제조한 전파흡수체에서는 이동통신주파수 대역인 $1.65\;GHz{\sim}1.86\;GHz$에서 가장 우수한 전파흡수특성을 나타내었다.

Effects of Size and Permittivity of Rat Brain on SAR Values at 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of size and permittivity on the specific absorption rate(SAR) values of rat brains during microwave exposure at mobile phone frequency bands. A finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique with perfect matching layer(PML) absorbing boundaries is used for this evaluation process. A color coded digital image of the Sprague Dawley(SD) rat based on magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) is used in FDTD calculation with appropriate permittivity values corresponding to different tissues for 3, 4, 7, and 10 week old rats. This study is comprised of three major parts. First, the rat model structure is scaled uniformly, i.e., the rat size is increased without change in permittivity. The simulated SAR values are compared with other experimental and numerical results. Second, the effect of permittivity on SAR values is examined by simulating the microwave exposure on rat brains with various permittivity values for a fixed rat size. Finally, the SAR distributions in depth, and the brain-averaged SAR and brain 1 voxel peak SAR values are computed during the microwave exposure on a rat model structure when both size and permittivity have varied corresponding to different ages ranging from 3 to 10 weeks. At 900 MHz, the simulation results show that the brain-averaged SAR values decreased by about 54 % for size variation from the 3 week to the 10 week-old rat model, while the SAR values decreased only by about 16 % for permittivity variation. It is found that the brain averaged SAR values decreased by about 63 % when the variations in size and permittivity are taken together. At 1,800 MHz, the brain-averaged SAR value is decreased by 200 % for size variation, 9.7 % for permittivity variation, and 207 % for both size and permittivity variations.

28 GHz 초전도 ECRIS 플라즈마에서의 마이크로파 전파 (Microwave Propagation in the Plasma for 28 GHz Superconducting ECRIS)

  • 한국기초과학지원연구원 부산센터에서 개발 중인 28 GHz ECRIS에 대한 마이크로파 패킷의 전파와 흡수에 대한 분석을 제한된 변수 범위 내에서 실시하였다. 28 GHz 자이로트론에서 발생된 마이크로파는 도파관 시스템을 거쳐 자기장 및 플라즈마 캐비티의 축방향으로 입사된다. 축방향 자기장만을 고려한 분석적 Ray Tracying에 의하면 고자기장 영역에서 준 종파로 입사된 전자기 파동의 패킷은 전자 사이클로트론 공명 영역으로 진행함에 따라 바깥 방향에서 안쪽 방향으로 방향을 바꾼다. 따라서 일정 수준의 전자밀도가 유지되면 입사 초기에 발산하던 파동은 공명에 의하여 플라즈마로 흡수되기 전에 전도체인 플라즈마 캐비티 벽에 충돌할 가능성이 크지 않음을 확인하였다. 또한 플라즈마로의 흡수율이 매우 크므로 인출부 벽에서 반사될 가능성도 크지 않다.
