The objective of this study is to investigate the characteristics - microstructure, hardness, adhesive strength and friction coefficient - of the coatings with aging - treatment after optimizing internal- plasma spraying parameters for Al-30wt%Si powder as a basic research to manufacture the cylinder block bore for Al engine composed of Al-30wt%Si alloy on Al alloy, The optimum internal-plasma spraying parameters of Al-30wt%Si alloy are summarized as follows: voltage: 37.5V, current: 160A, working distance: 25mm, gun traverse speed: 4.5mm/s, rotating speed: 518m/min. The primary Si particles grew aggressively with increasing heat-treating temperature. The hardness of the as-sprayed coating was about Hv=275 but this value was abruptly decreased with increasing heat-treating temperature. And average friction coefficient of the coating was below 0.08 after heat treatment for 48h at $175^{\circ}C$.

Ti-25Al-xNb (x=0, 3, 7, 11, 13 at. %) alloys and 18 vol. % TiB/(Ti-25Al-11Nb) metal matrix composite were fabricated by spark plasma sintering process at 900-120$0^{\circ}C$. Microstructural characteristics of the sintered bodies were identified by SEM, EDX analysis, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimeterric method. $Ti_3Al$ alloy was consisted of equiaxed $\alpha_2$ phase. $Ti_3Al-Nb$ alloys and the matix of TiB/(Ti-25Al-11Nb) metal matrix composite had the morphology that O phase was precipitated at the grain boundary of $\alpha_2$phase. Volume fraction of O phase and hardness were depended on the concentration of Nb in $Ti_3Al-Nb$ alloy, Rule of mixing could be applied to hardness and Young's modulus of 18 vol. % TiB/(Ti-25Al-11Nb) metal matrix composite.
The effects of boron or manganese added as $B_4C$, Mn, $TiB_2$, B on TiC-30vo1.%$Ni_3Al$ cermet sintered at 1380 and $1400^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour, were examined in relation with shrinkage, relative density, microstructure, lattice parameter, hardness and fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$). The results are summarized as follows: 1) The highest shrink-age showed about 30.5% in the specimen added B$_4$C and the maximum relative density was about 99% in the specimen added $TiB_2$; 2) The grains of TiC were grown during sintering and made the surrounding structure by adding boron and manganese. The largest grain size showed about $2.8\mutextrm{m}$ in the specimen with boron sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$;3) The lattice parameter of TiC was about $4.325\AA$ and $Ni_3Al$ about $3.592\AA$ by adding other elements; 4) The highest hardness was about $1100kgf/\textrm{mm}^2$ in the specimen with B4C; 5) The fracture toughness ($K_{IC}$) showed about $15MNm^{-3/2}$ in the specimen added $TiB_2$.
Experimental Ti-13%Zr and Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloys were made in an argon-arc melting furnace. The grade 2 CP Ti was used to control. To investigate the surface reaction layers produced by the reaction with mold materials and the influence of the reaction layers on the hardness of castings, A phosphate bonded $SiO_2$ base investment was used as mold material, and microstructure observation and hardness test were performed. The surface reaction layers of Ti-13%Zr and Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloys were thinner than that of CP Ti had a clearly multiple structure. A difference of the hardness between surface and inner of the Ti-13%Zr and Ti-13%Zr-5%Cu alloys became less than that of CP Ti. From the results, it was found that the Ti-Zr-(Cu) based alloys were possible to cast with $SiO_2$ base investment without the great changes of mechanical properties of the castings.
By using the centrifugal atomization, which is one of the rapid solidification processes, Al-5,10wt%Pb alloys which are monotectic alloys were melted at 150K over two liquid phase line in the phase diagram. The melted alloy was poured on the rotating disk, being made into atomized powders, and then the solidified microstructure and morphology of the powder were investigated. This study converted the produced powders into strips by strained powder rolling. According to sintering temperature, the microstructure and hardness were investigated. The solidified structure of the powders were almost cellular dendritic structure. Pb particles ($2.0-3.0{\mu}m$) were fairl distributed in the Al matrix. Powder shapes were irregular. Rolling property and the compacting was good, respectively, because of increasing mechanical interlocking and surface area in the small size powders. With increasing temperature, the boundarys of powders were in porous form due to the diffusion. Pb particles which were surrounding the pores were inverse-segregated at the surface of the powders. With increasing of sintering temperature, the hardness of the powders and the strips decreased. In particular rolling-strip, the hardness abruptly decreased due to the release of work-hardening.
Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) Fe with $Al_2O_3$ dispersoid was successfully produced by reactive milling with a mixture of Fe, $Fe_3O_4$ (Magnetite), $Fe_2O_3$ (Hematite) and Al reactants at cryogenic temperature. The milled powders were consolidated by Vacuum Hot Press (HP) at 1323 K, and the consolidated materials were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM), and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS); the yield strength and the hardness of the consolidated materials were determined by compressive test and Vickers hardness test at room temperature. The grain size of the materials was estimated by X-ray Diffraction technique using the scherrer's formula. The TEM observations showed that the microstructure was comprised with a mixture of nanocrystalline Fe matrix and $Al_2O_3$ nano-dispersoids with a bimodal size distribution; the 0.2% off-set yield strength of the materials was as high as $758{\pm}29$ MPa and the Vickers hardness was $358{\pm}2$. The effect of the cryogenic milling and addition of extra Fe powder was discussed on the suppression of MSR (Mechanically induced Self-sustaining Reaction) for the desired microstructural evolution of ODS alloys.
White cast iron of 3%C-10%Cr-5%Mo-5%W was casted, and then heat treated with three different methods such as homogenizing, austenitizing and tempering to observe its effects on the microstructure, hardness and abrasive wear resistance. In uni-directional soldification, bamboo tree-like $M_7C_3$ carbide grew along with the heat flow direction, and fishbone-like $M_6C$ carbide was dispersed randomly among $M_7C_3$ carbides. While almost pearlitic structures were observed in the as-cast specimen, those of the heat treated specimens consisted of secondary carbide, retained austenite and tempered martensite. In austenitized specimen, the amounts of retained austenite were 60.88% due to the higher cooling rate encountered in forced air cooling. On the other hand, the amounts of retained austenite were reduced from 60.88% to 23.85% in tempered specimen due to the transformation of austenite into tempered martensite. The hardness of tempered specimen showed the highest value, and then decreased in the order of austenitized, as-cast and homogenized specimens. But, the abrasive wear resistance of austenitized specimen was the highest, and then decreased in the order of tempered, as-cast and homogenized specimens.
In this study, ternary Ti-Mo-N and new quaternary Ti-Mo-Si-N coatings were synthesized on steel substrates(AISI D2) and Si wafers by a hybrid coating system of arc ion plating (AIP) using Ti target and d.c. magnetron sputtering technique using Mo and Si targets in $N_2/Ar$ gaseous mixture. Ternary Ti-Mo-N coatings were substitutional solid-solution of (Ti, Mo)N and showed maximum hardness of approximately 30 GPa at the Mo content of ${\sim}10$. %. The Ti-Mo-Si-N coating with the Si content of 8.8 at. % was a composite consisting of fine (Ti, Mo)N crystallites and amorphous $Si_3N_4$ phase. The hardness of the Ti-Mo-Si(8.8 at. %)-N coatings exhibited largely increased hardness value of ${\sim}48$ GPa due to the microstructural evolution to the fine composite microstructure and the refinement of (Ti, Mo)N crystallites. The average friction coefficient of the Ti-Mo-Si-N coatings largely decreased with increase of Si content. The microstructures of Ti-Mo-Si-N coatings were investigated with instrumental analyses of XRD, XPS, and HRTEM in this work.
This study is related to the surface hardening treatment to spheroidal graphite cast iron for die by using high power diode laser. Laser device used in this experiment is capable of real-time laser power control. This is because the infrared temperature sensor (two color pyrometer) attached to the optical system measures the surface temperature of specimen and adjusts the laser power in real time. The surface treatment was carried out with the change of heat treatment temperature at the beam travel speed 3 mm/sec. Hardened width and depth was measured and hardened zone was analyzed by micro vickers hardness test in order to research the optimum condition of heat treatment. The changes in microstructure of the hardened zone also was examined. As a result of hardness measurement and observations on microstructure of hardened zone, hardness increased over three times as compared with base metal because the martensite was formed on the matrix structure.
