  • Characteristics of microstructures, mechanical properties and formability of two Al-20Si-5Fe-2Ni alloys produced by gas atomizing (P/M) and spray forming (S/F) respectively were compared at temperatures up to $560^{\circ}C$. Room temperature hardness values and tensile strengths of both alloys were increased in accordance with temperature after heat treatment above $300^{\circ}C$. The highest values of hardness and tensile strength of both alloys were obtained at $490^{\circ}C$. It was interpreted that increase in hardness and tensile strength according to heating temperature between $300{\sim}490^{\circ}C$ was mainly related to increase in internal stress between Al matrix and reprecipitated particles. S/F alloys showed better formability and wear property than P/M alloys due to the homogenity of microstructures above $300^{\circ}C$.

  • Carburizing of a 12%Cr steel containing 0.6%Si was performed at 950$^{\circ}C$ for various times, and the microstructure, hardness and the water characteristics of the carburized chromium steel were examined. The results obtained in this study are as follows: 1. Carbide-dispersed layer (CD layer) with fine dispersion of $Cr_7C_3$ in martensite matrix was formed by carburizing. The radius and amount of the carbides in the surface region of CD layer were about 0.3${\mu}m$ and 35% by volume, respectively. 2. Chromium steel carburized and quench-tempered showed better wear resistance and hardness than ordinary high chromium tool steel. It is concluded from these results that fine dispered carbides are very effective in improving wear resistance and hardness.

  • The effect of carbon doping contents on the microstructure, hardness, and corrosion properties of heat-treated AISI steel grades of plain carbon steel was investigated in this study. Various microstructures including coarse ferrite-pearlite, fine ferrite-pearlite, martensite, and bainite were developed by different heat treatments i.e. annealing, normalizing, quenching, and austempering, respectively. The developed microstructures, micro-hardness, and corrosion properties were investigated by a light optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, electromechanical (Vickers Hardness tester), and electrochemical (Gamry Potentiostat) equipment, respectively. The highest corrosion rates were observed in bainitic microstructures (2.68-12.12 mpy), whereas the lowest were found in the fine ferritic-pearlitic microstructures (1.57-6.36 mpy). A direct correlation has been observed between carbon concentration and corrosion rate, i.e. carbon content resulted in an increase in corrosion rate (2.37 mpy for AISI 1020 to 9.67 mpy for AISI 1050 in annealed condition).

  • Cr-O-N coatings having different oxygen contents were deposited on Si wafer and SUS 304 substrates by an arc ion plating technique using Cr target in $Ar/O_2/N_2$ gaseous atmosphere. As increasing oxygen content in the coating, the microstructure of Cr-O-N coating changed from polycrystalline having NaCl structure to amorphous structure. Further increase of oxygen content resulted in phase transformation from amorphous to rhombohedral structure. From the variations of d value and average grain size, it was revealed that the maximum solubility of oxygen in Cr-O-N coating was about 21 at.%. And the maximum micro-hardness of 2751HK was obtained in this composition. The lowest friction coefficient was measured in the coating having 34.8 at.% of oxygen. However, more narrow width of wear track was found in the coating having 30.1 at.% of oxygen.

  • In the present study, (10%$Al_2O_3$+5%Si)/AZ91 Mg hybrid composite was fabricated using the squeeze casting method. During squeeze casting, molten Mg was infiltrated into the preform of 10%$Al_2O_3$+5%Si and reaction product of $Mg_2Si$ intermetallic compound was formed by the reaction between molten Mg and Si powder. Microstructure has been observed and mechanical properties were evaluated for the reaction squeeze cast (RSC) hybrid composite. It was found that Si powder totally reacted with molten Mg to form $Mg_2Si$. Reinforcement ($Al_2O_3$) and the reaction product ($Mg_2Si$) are fairly uniformly distributed in Mg matrix for the squeeze cast hybrid composite. Mechanical properties were improved with hybridization of reinforcements, namely higher hardness and enhanced wear resistance comparing squeeze cast (15%$Al_2O_3$)/AZ91 Mg composite.

  • In the present study, AZ91Mg/$\textrm{Al}_2\textrm{O}_3$ short fiber+SiC particulates hybrid metal matrix composites(MMCs) were fabricated by squeeze casting method. Different particulate sizes of 45, 29 and $9\mu\textrm{m}$ were hybridized with 5% volume fraction to investigate the effect of SiC particulates size on microstructure, mechanical and thermal properties such as hardness, flexural strength, wear resistance and thermal expansion. Results show that the microstructure of the hybrid composites were quite satisfactory, namely revealing relatively uniform distribution of reinforcements. Some aggregation of SiC particulates caused by particle pushing was observed especially in the hybrid composites containing in fine particulates($9\mu\textrm{m}$). The hardness and flexural strength were improved by decreasing particulates size, whereas wear resistance improved by increasing particulates size because of large particulates restricting matrix wear from contacted stress. Regardless of particulates size, thermal expansion of composites was the same. This may be because the content of particulates was in all cases 5 volume fraction.1

  • The effect of heat treatment on the microstructure and mechanical properties of cast Ti-6%Al-4%V alloy was investigated. Heat treatment of cast Ti-6Al-4V alloy was conducted by solution treatment at $950^{\circ}C$ for 30 min; this was followed by water quenching and then aging at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1 to 1440 min. The highest hardness of the heat-treated specimens was obtained by solution treatment and subsequent aging for 5 min due to precipitates of fine ${\alpha}$ that formed from retained ${\beta}$ phase. The tensile strength of this alloy increased without dramatic decrease of the ductility due to microstructural refinement resulting from the decomposition of ${\alpha}^{\prime}$ martensite into fine ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}$ phases, and also due to the fine ${\alpha}$ phase formed from the retained ${\beta}$ phase by aging treatment for 5 min. In addition, this strengthening might be caused by the transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) effect, which is a strain-induced martensite transformation from the retained ${\beta}$ phase during deformation, and which occurs even after aging treatment at $550^{\circ}C$ for 5 min.

  • This study investigates the microstructural properties of CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy (HEA) oxynitride thin film. The HEA oxynitride thin film is grown by the magnetron sputtering method using nitrogen and oxygen gases. The grown CoCrFeMnNi HEA film shows a microstructure with nanocrystalline regions of 5~20 nm in the amorphous region, which is confirmed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM). From the TEM electron diffraction pattern analysis crystal structure is determined to be a face centered cubic (FCC) structure with a lattice constant of 0.491 nm, which is larger than that of CoCrFeMnNi HEA. The HEA oxynitride film shows a single phase in which constituting elements are distributed homogeneously as confirmed by element mapping using a Cs-corrected scanning TEM (STEM). Mechanical properties of the CoCrFeMnNi HEA oxynitride thin film are addressed by a nano indentation method, and a hardness of 8.13 GPa and a Young's modulus of 157.3 GPa are obtained. The observed high hardness value is thought to be the result of hardening due to the nanocrystalline microstructure.

  • An experimental investigation with 2.8kW Nd:YAG laser system was carried out to study the effects of different laser process parameters on the microstructure and hardness of STD11. The optical lens with the elliptical profile are designed to obtain a wide surface hardening area with uniform hardness. The Laser beam is allowed to scan on the surface of the work piece varying the power (1600, 1800 and 1900kW) and traverse speed (200, 400, 600, 800 and 1000mm/min) at three different F-numbers of lens. After laser surface treatment three zones, In the microstructure have been observed : melted zone(decarburization), heat affected zone(martensite), and the substrate.

  • The recent trend of miniaturization and high performance of vehicle engines has put an urgent necessity for the development of valve seats which can operate under more severe conditions. In order to develope valve seat material that has the most excellent wear resistance at operating temperature of engine through improvement of the progress of work. the effects of mixing ratio of the milled powder on sintered and Cu-infiltrated properties of sintered valve seats have been studied. The resultant radial crushing strength and hardness of sintered specimens were gradually increased with increasement of volume of milled powders. It is because increasement of sintering density by increasing of surface diffusion. The hardness of Cu-infiltrated specimens became lower than that of the commercial powders as the increasement of volume of milled powders. It was due to the decrease of the amount of the martensite. By results of this research, It has been found that martensite is formed around of the Cu-infiltrated site and the decrease of the amount of the martensite is due to decrease of the amount of the Cu-infiltrated site by the decrease of gas channel.
