PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of atmospheric plasma (APL) versus conventional surface treatments on the adhesion of self-adhesive resin cement to Ti-6Al-4V alloy. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Sixty plates of machined titanium (Ti) discs were divided into five groups (n=12): 1) Untreated (CNT); 2) Sandblasted (SAB); 3) Tribochemically treated (ROC); 4) Tungsten CarbideBur (TCB); 5) APL treated (APL). SEM analysis and surface roughness (Ra) measurements were performed. Self-adhesive resin cement was bonded to the Ti surfaces and shear bond strength (SBS) tests, Ra and failure mode examinations were carried out. Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and chi-squared test. RESULTS. The lowest SBS value was obtained with CNT and was significantly different from all other groups except for APL. The ROC showed the highest SBS and Ra values of all the groups. CONCLUSION. It was concluded that the effect of APL on SBS and Ra was not sufficient and it may not be a potential for promoting adhesion to titanium.
Statement of problem: Literature showed different results on the durability of bonded ceramic restoration. Purpose: The purpose of this article is to review the effect of surface treatment of ceramics in resin-ceramic bond to get predictable results. Material and method: PubMed data base was utilized to search the articles which were written in English and published in 1986 and 2006. Some electronic published articles which are forthcoming to publish in paper were also included for this review. This review article focused on the effect of acid etching and silane application on the silica based ceramics. The durability of resin-ceramic bonding, the methodology for bond strength test and resin bonding to alumina or zirconia based ceramics were compared in brief at the end of the review. Results and Conclusion: the effect of silane application can be influenced by the contaminations of saliva or solutions. Micromechanical retention by acid etching as well as silane application plays an important role in initial and durable bond strength between resin and ceramic. The use of phosphate modified resin cement following tribochemical silica coating and silane application produced best bond strength for alumina or zirconia based ceramics.

In the recent design of high ductile fiber-reinforced ECC (engineered cementitious composite), optimizing both processing and mechanical properties for specific applications is critical. This study presents an innovative method to develop new class ECCs, which possess the different fluid properties to facilitate diverse types of processing (i.e., self-consolidating or shotcrete processing) while maintaining ductile hardened properties. In the material design concept, we employ a parallel control of fresh and hardened properties by using micromechanics and cement rheology. Control of colloidal interaction between the particles is regarded as a key factor to allow the performance of the specific processing. To determine how to control the particle interactions and the viscosity of cement suspension, we first introduce two chemical admixtures including a highly charged polyelectrolyte and a non-ionic polymer. Optimized mixing steps and dosages we, then, obtained within the solid concentration predetermined based on micromechanical principle. Test results indicate that the rheological properties altered by this approach were revealed to be highly effective in obtaining the desired function of the fresh ECC, allowing us to readily achieve hardened properties, represented by pseudo strain-hardening behavior in uniaxial tension.
In this paper, the three dimensional Parallel Realistic Failure Process Analysis ($RFPA^{3D}$-Parallel) code based on micromechanical model is employed to investigate the bonding behavior in FRP sheet bonded to concrete in single shear test. In the model, the heterogeneity of brittle disordered material at a meso-scale was taken into consideration in order to realistically demonstrate the mechanical characteristics of FRP-to-concrete. Modified Mohr-coulomb strength criterion with tension cut-off, where a stressed element can damage in shear or in tension, was adopted and a stiffness degradation approach was used to simulate the initiation, propagation and growth of microcracks in the model. In addition, a Master-Slave parallel operation control technique was adopted to implement the parallel computation of a large numerical model. Parallel computational results of debonding of FRP-concrete visually reproduce the spatial and temporal debonding failure progression of microcracks in FRP sheet bonded to concrete, which agrees well with the existing testing results in laboratory. The numerical approach in this study provides a useful tool for enhancing our understanding of cracking and debonding failure process and mechanism of FRP-concrete and our ability to predict mechanical performance and reliability of these FRP sheet bonded to concrete structures.
The moisture absorption behavior of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and its effect on dimensional stability were examined. Moisture diffusivity in CFRP was determined by measuring a specimen's weight during the moisture absorption test. Three types of CFRP specimens were prepared: a unidirectionally reinforced laminate, a quasi-isotropic laminate and woven fabric. Each CFRP was processed into two geometries - a thin plate for determination of diffusivity and a rod with a square cross-section for the discussion of two-dimensional diffusion behavior. By solving Fick's law expanded to 3 dimensions, the diffusivities in the three orthogonal directions were obtained and analyzed in terms of the anisotropy of CFRP moisture diffusion. Coefficients of moisture expansion (CMEs) were also obtained from specimen deformation caused by moisture absorption. During moisture absorption, the specimen surfaces showed larger deformation near the edges due to the distribution of moisture contents. This deformation was reasonably predicted by the finite element analysis using experimentally determined diffusivities and CMEs. For unidirectional CFRP, the effect of the fiber alignment on CME was analyzed by micromechanical finite element analysis (FEA) and discussed.

This paper first reviews the physical meanings and the expressions of two representative strain rate models: CSM (Cowper-Symonds Model) and JCM (Johnson-Cook Model). Since it is known that the CSM and the JCM are suitable for low-intermediate and intermediate-high rate ranges, many studies regarding marine accidents such as ship collision/grounding and explosion in FPSO have employed the CSM. A formula to predict the material constant of the CSM is introduced from literature survey. Numerical simulations with two different material constitutive equations, classical metal plasticity model based on von Mises yield function and micromechanical porous plasticity model based on Gurson yield function, have been carried out for the stiffened plates under impact loading. Simulation results coincide with experimental results better when using the porous plasticity model.

The present article focuses on the thermoelastic deformation behavior of inhomogeneous functionally graded metal/ceramic cylindrical shell structure with multiple perforations using 2D finite element approximation. Here, cylindrical shell structure is considered with single (1×1) and multiple (2×2, 3×3 and 4×4) perforations. The temperature-dependent elastic and thermal properties of functionally graded material are evaluated using Voigt's micromechanical material scheme via power-law function. The kinematics of the proposed model is based on the equivalent single-layer first-order shear deformation mid-plane theory with five degrees-of-freedom. Here, 2D isoparametric finite element solutions are obtained using eight-node quadrilateral elements. The mesh refinement of present finite element model is performed to confirm the appropriate number of elements and nodes for the analysis purpose. Subsequently, a comparison test is conducted to demonstrate the accuracy of present results. In later section, numerous numerical illustrations are demonstrated at different set of conditions by varying structural, material and loading parameters and that confirms the significance of various parameters such as power-law index, aspect ratio, thickness ratio, curvature ratio, number of perforations and temperature on the deformation characteristics of functionally graded cylindrical shell structure.

This study employs the microshear test method to examine the local mechanical properties of narrow-gap welded joints, revealing the mechanical inhomogeneity by evaluating the microshear strength, stress-strain curves, and failure strain. On this basis, the influence of weld joints micromechanical inhomogeneity on the crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) fracture toughness is investigated. From the root weld layer to the cover weld layer, the fracture toughness at the center of the weld seam demonstrates an increasing trend, with the experimental and calculated CTOD values showing a good correspondence. The microproperties of the welded joints significantly impact the load-bearing capacity and fracture toughness. During the deformation process of the "low-matching" microregions, the plastic zone expansion is hindered by the surrounding microregion strength constraints, thus reducing the fracture toughness. In contrast, during the deformation of the "high-matching" microregions, the surrounding microregions absorb some of the loading energy, partially releasing the concentrated stress at the crack tip, which in turn increases the fracture toughness.

Self-sensing on micro-failure, dispersion degree and relating properties, of carbon nanotube(CNT)/epoxy composites, were investigated using wettability, electro-micromechanical technique with acoustic emission(AE). Specimens were prepared from neat epoxy as well as composites with untreated and acid-treated CNT. Degree of dispersion was evaluated comparatively by measuring volumetric electrical resistivity and its standard deviation. Apparent modulus containing the stress transfer was higher for acid-treated CNT composite than for the untreated case. Applied cyclic loading responded well for a single carbon fiber/CNT-epoxy composite by the change in contact resistivity. The interfacial shear strength between a single carbon fiber and CNT-epoxy, determined in a fiber pullout test, was lower than that between a single carbon fiber and neat epoxy. Regarding on micro-damage sensing using electrical resistivity measurement with AE, the stepwise increment in electrical resistivity was observed for a single carbon fiber/CNT -epoxy composite. On the other hand, electrical resistivity increased infinitely right after the first carbon fiber breaks for a single carbon fiber/neat epoxy composite. The occurrence of AE events of added CNT composites was much higher than the neat epoxy case, due to micro failure at the interfaces by added CNTs.
It is well know that the structure of shape memory alloy (SMA) can change from martensite austenite by either temperature or stress. Due to their inherent shape recovery properties, SMA fiber can be used such as for stress or cure-monitoring sensor or actuator, during applied stress or temperature. Incomplete superelasticity was observed as the stress hysteresis at stress-strain curve under cyclic loading test and temperature change. Superelasticity behavior was observed for the single-SMA fiber/epoxy composites under cyclic mechanical loading at stress-strain curve. SMA fiber or epoxy embedded SMA fiber composite exhibited the decreased interfacial properties due to the cyclic loading and thus reduced shape memory performance. Rigid epoxy and the changed interfacial adhesion between SMA fiber and epoxy by the surface treatment on SMA fiber exhibited similar incomplete superelastic trend. Epoxy embedded single SMA fiber exhibited the incomplete recovery during cure process by remaining residual heat and thus occurring residual stress in single SMA fiber/epoxy composite.
