  • Packaged meal manufacturing establishments in Seoul city and Kyungkido province were assessed in terms of the sanitary conditions and practices, time and temperature, and microbiological quality. Sanitary check-lists were developed to evaluate the sanitary condition of sampled packaged meal manufacturing establishments. Microbiological tests on.food containers, equipments, and foods in various phases of product flow were done. The results of the study are summarized as follows; 1) Sanitary condition of kitchen.and sanitary practices of employees in.large and medium establishments were evaluated as the some improvement required in order to meet all standards. But sanitary practices of employees in small establishments were evaluated as the unsatisfactory state with negligence or ignorance of safe practice. 2) The microbiological quality of basic ingredients and food materials after pre-preparation were poor. 3) Time and temperature data indicated that phases of holding ingredients at room temperature after cooking, assembly and packaging before delivery were critical. 4) Microbiological test results for food containers, equipments indicated that sanitary conditions of stainless steel ware, knife, wiping clothes and cutting board should be improved promptly. 5) Critical control points identified were ingredients, pre-preparation, Holding, and assembly and packaging. 6) Guidelines were suggested for effective quality control of packaged meals production.

  • Widal Test has been performed on the patients of 1052 admitted with suspicious typhoid for 5 years (Jan. '68 Dec. '72) White blood cell count, Hematocrit and Bacterial cultures are compared with widal titer and found a slight atypical variation from the characteristic pattern of it. 1. There is frequency distribution on the age of 20-40 yrs. as far as social activity concerned. (Table 1) 2. A slight leukopenia exists on the high titer of it but no definite pattern has been found. 3. S. Typhi has been grown on the low titer of it but no growth on the high titer. 4. It ia the most important in public health view point (no definite clinical symptom, Hematological, Serological, Microbiological characteristics.)

  • The disinfection effects of sunlight and predacious microorganisms on enteria of Escherichia coli and Proteus vulgaris were examined in sewage water at 22 to $26^{\circ}C$. The test prganisms were disinfected by 4 to 5 logs during 6-hour a day exposure to sunlight for seven days. The effect was proportional to the light intensity and was proved to be dur to the action of the visible light of short wavelength which can transmit the soft glass of a flask glass. The predacious microorganisms decreased trhe test organisms by about 3 to 4 logs during 7 days. The complex actions of sunlight and predacious microorganisms were variable depending upon the test organisms, but the total effects of those enviromental factors were yet completely understood.

  • An improved fungal test method, soft agar overlay method, has been developed for the measurement of biodegradability of synthetic polymers. Advantages of this technique over conventionally used test method of ASTM include better visualization of fungal growth on polymeric materials, shortening of incubaiton period, and engnaced sensitivity especially to polymeric materials containing highly recalcitrant molecules.

  • Escherichiae-like organisms were isolated from rectal specimens of 56 children who were either in preschool age or in elementary school. The isolated strains were subjected to tests to screen enteropathogens producing heat-labile enterotoxin and susceptibility test to various antibiotics by disc diffusion method on agar plates. Production of heat-labile enterotoxin by the strains was assyed in the sensitive and reproducible cultured adrenal tumor cell system. The assay was sterodogenesis of the cell in the presence of heat-labile enterotoxin. Among 56 strains, gave positive reaction in the test of toxin production. This meant that about 10% of the children population objected to the study harbored the toxigenic strain of enteropathogenes. Some of these toxigenic strains were resistant to the antibiotics employed in the test. This study suggested that considerable population in Korea may harbor entertoxigenic E. coli as a part of intestinal normal flora. The toxigenic strains which are resistant to antibiotics may bring issue of public health in the future.

  • Small-seeded legumes can be cultured enclosed in slant agar tubes if dlese plants are to he used for authenicaiing rhizobia or for enumerating 1-hizobia by the plant-inlection technique. An improved method has been developed with substiluting agar slant lor Korean paper(Har7ji). This method was panicularly useful for legumes with rigid radicle such as Cn.xsin 1mnmame. With this method Bmr!,~li1rzobin,17 sp. stram CN9135 on C nonmne induced root nodules biginning at day 7 of the nodulation period in 6% of the l ~ l a ~ l s , and all of ihe plants nodulated 14 days after inoculation by strain CN9135.

  • The purpose of this research was first to analyse and compare the types of microbes inherent among the unwashed and washed Kupori textiles, and second to investigate whether there is a difference between unwashed and washed Kupori textiles on the susceptibility of contamination by microorganism when exposed to the same microbial environment. Microbial identification procedure and the Shake Flask Test for investigating the effect of exposure to microbial environment were carried out separately. The result of microbial identification procedure indicated that a variety of bacteria and fungi were inherent in both unwashed and washed textiles and that the population of contaminated microorganism became more diverse after washing. The result of Shake Flask Test indicated that given the same exposure condition, the unwashed textiles tend to be more susceptible to bacterial contamination than the washed textiles. The results of the present study supported the current conservation procedures adopted in Korean museums which include washing and humigation procedures before long-term storage or display of exhumed textiles.

  • A rotting bacterium was isolated from decayed root of ginseng (Panax ginseng Meyer), cultured purely, and its pathogenicity was confirmed by reinoculation test. The strain causing ginseng root rot was identified as Pseudomonas fluoresens biotype II. The strain was somewhat different from P.marginalis and P.talaasii, considering the number of flagella, pathotype and ability of indole production. The strain did not exhibit pathogenicity to other plants tested, such as red kidney bean(Phasolus vulgaris L.), soy bean (Glycine max Merr.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) and cowpea bean (Vigna sinensis Savi.).

  • For the purpose of determining possibility of aphid-transmission of mosaic disease of black locust, cowpea aphid (Aphis medicagnis Koch) and green peach aphid (Myzus persicae Sulzer) were experimented using cowpea as test plant, and both proved to be the vectors. As for transmission threshold period of cowpea aphid to the virus, the acquisition feeding period was five seconds and inoculation feeding period was two minutes. This black locust mosaic virus, therefore, is a nonpersistent virus.

  • Four stereoisomers of inositol p-aminosalicylate, that is hexaris-O-(p-aminosalicylyl)-myo-inositol, hexaris-O-(p-aminosalicylyl)-muco-inositol were synthesized by p-aminosalicylyl chloride with myo-, epi-, scyllo-, and muco-inositol respectively. Their antibacterial activity was tested against human type tubercle bacilli $H_{37}$/Rv, in contrast to 1.25.gamma./ml of p-aminosalicylic acid used as control. Hexaris-O-(p-aminoslicylyl)-muco-inositol showed the strongest antibacterial action at 0.625.gamma./ml, the other compounds more or less active than p-aminosalicylic acid.
