Silica($SiO_2$) thin film was synthesized by a low pressure metal organic chemical vapor deposition(LPMOCVD) using organic silane compound. Triethyl orthosilicate was used as a source material. Operation pressure was 1~100 torr at outlet of the reactor and deposition temperature was $600{\sim}900^{\circ}C$. The experimental results showed that the high reaction temperature and high source gas concentration led to higher growth rate of $SiO_2$. The step coverage of films on micro-scale trenches was fairly good, which resulted from the phenomena that the condensed oligomers flow into the trenches. We estimated a reaction path that the source gas polymerizes and produces oligomers (dimer, trimer, tetramer, etc.), which diffuse and condense on the solid surface. The chemical species in the gas phase at the outlet of reactor tube were analyzed by quadrapole mass spectrometer. The peaks, assigned to be monomer, dimer of source gas and geavier molecules, were observed at 650 or $700^{\circ}C$. At higher temperature($900^{\circ}C$), the peaks of the heavy molecules disappeared, because almost all the source gas and intermediate(polymerized oligomer) molecules were oxidized or condensed on colder tube wall.

In this study, $SiO_2/poly(ethylene-co-vinyl$ alcohol)(EVOH) hybrid coating materials with gas barrier property could be produced using sol-gel method. The biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) substrate with surface pretreatment was coated with the prepared hybrid sols containing various inorganic silicate component by a spin coating method. Crystallization behavior of the hybrids was investigated in terms of analysis of X-ray diffraction and cooling thermogram from DSC experiment. From the morphological observation of the $SiO_2/EVOH$ hybrid gel, it was confirmed that there existed an optimum content of inorganic silicate precursor, Tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), to produce hybrid materials with dense microstructure, exhibiting uniformly dispersed silica particles with average size below 100 nm. When TEOS was added at below or above the optimum content, particle clusters with large domain were observed, resulting in phase separation. This morphological result was found to be in good agreement with that of oxygen permeability of the hybrid coated films. In the case of film coated with hybrid prepared from addition of 0.01 - 0.02mol of TEOS, a remarkable improvement in barrier property could be obtained, however, with the addition of TEOS more than 0.04 mol, the barrier property was dramatically reduced because of phase separation and micro-crack formation on the film surface.
The silica containing carbon ($C-SiO_2$) membranes were fabricated using poly(imide siloxane)(Si-PI) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) blended polymer. The characteristics of porous carbon structures prepared by the pyrolysis of polymer blends were related with the micro-phase separation behaviors of the two polymers. The glass transition temperatures ($T_g$) of the mixed polymer blends of Si-PI and PVP were observed with a single $T_g$ using differential scanning calorimetry. Furthermore, the nitrogen adsorption isotherms of the $C-SiO_2$ membranes were investigated to define the characteristics of porous carbon structures. The $C-SiO_2$ membranes derived from Si-PI/PVP showed the type IV isotherm and possessed the hysteresis loop, which was associated with the mesoporous carbon structures. For the molecular sieving probe, the $C-SiO_2$ membranes were prepared with the ratio of Si-PI/PVP and the pyrolysis conditions, such as the pyrolysis temperature and the isothermal times. Consequently, the $C-SiO_2$ membranes prepared by the pyrolysis of Si-PI/PVP at $550^{\circ}C$ with the isothermal time of 120 min showed the $O_2$ permeability of 820 Barrer ($1{\times}10^{-10}cm^3(STP)cm/cm^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}cmHg$) and $O_2/N_2$ selectivity of 14.
For the control of pathogenic microorganisms, Bacillus spp. were isolated from diseased pepper fruits in Korea. Among them, Bacillus sp. IUB158-03 showed high inhibitory effect on mycelial growth and spore germination of C. gloeosporioides and Botrytis cinerea. The strain was identified as B. amyloliquefaciens IUB158-03 based on its physiological, biochemical characteristics and Microlog analysis. The highest level of antifungal substances by B. amyloliquefaciens IUB158-03 were obtained when the bacterium was cultured in medium containing 2% soluble starch, 3% yeast extract, 0.5% tryptone, 0.5% $NH_4H_2PO_4$, and 1% NaCl (pH 6.0) at $25^{\circ}C$ for 72 hrs. The antifungal substances were purified by butanol extraction, silica gel column chromatography, preparative thin layer chromatography, and high performance liquid chromatography. The purified antifungal substance was confirmed $R_f$ 0.27 by TLC. This substance exhibited antifungal activity against Fusarium solani, Rhizoctonia solani, Botrytis cineria, Alternata alternaria of plant pathogenic fungi and Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Epidermophyton floccosum, Cryptococcus neoformans of human pathogenic fungi.
We explore the effect of particle shape and size on 3-dimensional (3D) network and pore structure of porous earth materials composed of glass beads and silica gel using NMR micro-imaging in order to gain better insights into relationship between structure and the corresponding hydrologic and seismological properties. The 3D micro-imaging data for the model porous networks show that the specific surface area, porosity, and permeability range from 2.5 to $9.6\;mm^2/mm^3$, from 0.21 to 0.38, and from 11.6 to 892.3 D (Darcy), respectively, which are typical values for unconsolidated sands. The relationships among specific surface area, porosity, and permeability of the porous media are relatively well explained with the Kozeny equation. Cube counting fractal dimension analysis shows that fractal dimension increases from ~2.5-2.6 to 3.0 with increasing specific surface area from 2.5 to $9.6\;mm^2/mm^3$, with the data also suggesting the effect of porosity. Specific surface area, porosity, permeability, and cube counting fractal dimension for the natural mongolian sandstone are $0.33\;mm^2/mm^3$, 0.017, 30.9 mD, and 1.59, respectively. The current results highlight that NMR micro-imaging, together with detailed statistical analyses can be useful to characterize 3D pore structures of various porous earth materials and be potentially effective in accounting for transport properties and seismic wave velocity and attenuation of diverse porous media in earth crust and interiors.

The main purpose of this study is to evaluate of backwash system of hydrodynamic separator filter (HSF) with solar powered submerged pumps. It consists of a photovoltaic solar array, control electronics, battery, and two submersible pump powered by a 12 voltage DC motor. The laboratory scale study on treatable potential of micro particles using backwash HSF that was a combined with perlite filter cartridge and backwash nozzles. Since it was not easy to use actual storm water in the scaled-down hydraulic model investigations, it was necessary to reproduce ranges of particle sizes with synthetic materials. The synthesized storm runoff was made with water and addition of particles; ion exchange resin partices, silica gel particles, and commercial area manhole sediment particles. HSF was made of acryl resin with 250 mm of diameter filter chamber and overall height of 800 mm. Four case test were performed with different backwashing conditions and determined the SS removal efficiency with various surface loading rates. The operated range of surface loading rate was about 308~$1,250m^3/m^2/day$. It was found that SS removal efficiency of HSF using two submersible pumps improved by about 18% compared with HSF without backwash. Nonpoint control devices with solar water pumping systems would be useful for backwashing the filter in areas with not suppling electricity and reduce filter media exchange cost.
This paper presents the mix composition, production method, and curing condition applied to the extruded ECC(Engineered Cementitious Composite) panel which are able to exhibit multiple cracking and potential pseudo strain-hardening behavior. In addition to the production technique of extruded ECC panel, the effect of fiber distribution characteristics, which are uniquely created by applying extrusion process, on the flexural behavior of the panel is also focussed. In order to demonstrate fiber distribution, a series of experiments and analyses, including image processing/analysis and micro-mechanical analysis, was performed. The optimum mix composition of extruded ECC panel was determined in terms of water matrix ratio, the amount of cement, ECC powder, and silica powder. It was found that flexural behavior of extruded ECC panel was highly affected by the slight difference in mix composition of ECC panel. This is mainly because the difference in mix composition results in the change of micro-mechanical properties as well as fiber distribution characteristics, represented by fiber dispersion and orientation. In terms of the average fiber orientation, the fiber distribution was found to be similar to the assumption of two dimensional random distribution, irrespective of mix composition. In contrast, the probability density function for fiber orientation was measured to be quite different depending on the mix composition.
Alkali-activated slag (AAS) is the most obvious alternative materials that can replace OPC. But, AAS industrial usage as a structural material should be evaluated for its durability. Carbonation resistance is one of the most important factors in durability evaluation. Test results for 18 slag-based mortars activated by sodium silicate and 6 OPC mortars were obtained in this study to verify the carbonation property. Main variables considered in the study were flow, compressive strength before and after carbonation, and carbonation depth. Mineralogical and micro-structural analysis of OPC and AAS specimens prior to and after carbonation was conducted using XRD, TGA, FTIR FE-SEM. Test results showed that CHS was major hydration products of AAS and, unlike OPC, no other hydration products were found. After carbonation, CSH of hydration product in AAS turned into an amorphous silica gel, and alumina compounds was not detected. From the analysis of the results, it was estimated that the micro-structures of CSH in AAS easily collapsed during carbonation. Also, the results showed that this collapse of chemical chain of CSH lowered the compressive strength of concrete after carbonation. By increasing the dosage of activators, carbonation resistance and compressive strength were effectively improved.
Since the requirement of the high density integration and thin package technique of semiconductor have been increasing, the main package type of semiconductor will be a chip scale package (CSP). The changes of diffusion coefficient and moisture content ratio of epoxy resin systems according to the change of liquid type epoxy resin and fillers for CSP applications were investigated. The epoxy resins used in this study are RE-304S, RE310S, and HP-4032D, and Kayahard MCD as hardener and 2-methylimidazole as catalyst were used in these epoxy resin systems. The micro-sized and nano-sized spherical type fused silica as filler were used in order to study the moisture absorption properties of these epoxy molding compound (EMC) according to the change of filler size. The temperature of glass transition (Tg) of these EMC was measured using Dynamic Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), and the moisture absorption properties of these EMC according to the change of time were observed at $85^{\circ}C$ and 85% relative humidity condition using a thermo-hygrostat. The diffusion coefficients in these EMC were calculated in terms of modified Crank equation based on Ficks' law. An increase of diffusion coefficient and maximum moisture absorption ratio with Tg in these systems without filler can be observed, which are attributed to the increase of free volume with Tg. In the EMC with filler, the changes of Tg and maximum moisture absorption ratio with the filler content can be hardly observed, however, the diffusion coefficients of these systems with filler content show the outstanding changes according to the filler size. The diffusion via free volume is dominant in the EMC with micro-sized filler; however, the diffusion with the interaction of absorption according the increase of the filler surface area is dominant in the EMC with nano-sized filler.
In the non-conductive adhesives (NCAs) for adhesion of micro electro mechanical system (MEMS), there are some problems such as delamination and cracking resulting from the large differences of coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) between NCAs and substrates. So, the addition of inorganic particles such as silica and nano clay to the CTEs composit have been applied to reduce the CTEs of the adhesives. Additions of the flexibilizers such as siloxanes have also been performed to improve the flexibility of epoxy composite. Amino modified siloxane (AMSs) were used to improve compatibility between epoxy and siloxane. In this study, glass transition temperatures (Tg) and moduli of those composites were measured to confirm the effects of AMS with two different equivalents on thermal/mechanical properties of AMS/epoxy composites. Tg of KF-8010/epoxy composites decreased from 148 to $122^{\circ}C$ and those of X-22-161A/epoxy composites decreased from 148 to $121^{\circ}C$. Moduli of KF-8010/epoxy composites decreased from 2648 to 2143 MPa by adding KF-8010 and moduli of X-22-161A/epoxy composites decreased from 2648 to 2014 MPa. In short, using long Si-O chain AMS leads to a greater decrease in moduli. However, haven't showed significant differences in Tg's.
