  • Due to the environmental concerns, especially the greenhouse effect and GWP (Global Warming Potential), the carbon dioxide was investigated as an alternative natural refrigerant to replace HFCs (HydroFluoroCarbons) in refrigerator or air conditioning systems. Because new compressor with carbon dioxide is going to be operated under the high pressure, the tribology of sliding surfaces in the compressor becomes very important. To improve of wear resistance in compressor parts, especially rotary type, the friction and wear characteristics of improved sliding surfaces between vane and flange were evaluated in this paper. The method of reformed sliding surface, such as micro-dimple processes, was applied on surfaces in order to improve the tribological characteristics, and their performances were evaluated experimentally. The vane-on-flange type lubricated sliding tests were performed with a high pressure wear tester using carbon dioxide. Test results showed that the reformed surfaces were very effective to reduce the friction and the wear amounts of vane surfaces. The method of improved surfaces showed good tribological properties at vane and flange.

  • An experimental study was conducted on the wear and friction responses in sliding tests of a micro-textured surface on laser pattern (LP) steel as reduction gear material in electric guided vehicle. In this research, the friction characteristics of laser pattern steel under different micro texture density conditions were investigated. The friction tests were carried out at sliding speeds of 0.06 m/s to 0.34 m/s and at normal loads of 2 to 10 N. Photolithography method was used to create the dimples for surface texturing purpose. Four different specimens having different dimple densities of 10%, 12.5%, 15%, and 20% were observed respectively. In this research, friction conditions as shown in Stribeck curve were investigated. Furthermore, the microscopic surface was observed using scanning electron microscope. It was found that the dimple density had a significant role on the friction characteristics of laser pattern steel conditioned as reduction gear material in an agricultural vehicle. The duty number showed that the friction condition was hydrodynamic regime. The best performance was obtained from 12.5% dimple density with lowest friction coefficient achieved at 0.018771 under the velocity of 0.34 m/s and 10N load.

  • Electrodeposited Ni and Ni-SiC composite coatings were prepared on Cu substrates by using the Ni-Sulfamate electrolytic bath. Thus prepared samples were subjected for the two different types of post surface modification techniques; i.e. Laser Surface Texturing (LST) and Ultrasonic Nano Surface Modification (UNSM), respectively in order to investigate their effects on surface and interface related properties of the coatings. Hemispherical dimples, with 80 to 200 um dimple spacing, were created and examined on the surfaces of the materials studied. The results revealed that micro-surface texturing with 150 um dimple spacing considerably improved the coefficient of friction. Dimple spacing accuracy and incorporated second phase ceramic particles both contributed significantly to reduction in coefficient of friction. On the other hand, application of UNSM considerably modified the surface topography, led to increase the Vickers microhardness, and reduced the wear and coefficient of friction as compared to non UNSM treated Ni and Ni-SiC samples.

  • Recently, with the merits of simplicity, ease of mass production and cost effectiveness, a roll-to-roll (R2R) forming process is tried to be employed in the manufacturing of the circuit board, barrier ribs and other electronic device. In this study, the roll-to-roll process for the forming of micro-pattern in electronic device panel is designed and analyzed. In the preliminary experiments, two major defects, i.e., crack near the dimple wall and wrinkling on outside region of dimple, are found. The study on the crack prevention is carried out in previous works by authors. In this study, the cause of wrinkling and modification of tooling to prevent the wrinkling is studied. The main cause of wrinkling is considered to be the uneven material flow along the rolling direction. To reduce or to retard the wrinkling initiation, a dummy shape on outside the pattern is introduced. From the finite element analysis results, it is shown that the dummy shape can reduce the uneven material flow significantly. Finally the effect of dimensions of the dummy shape on material flow is investigated and the optimum dimensions are found.

  • Laser surface texturing (LST) methods are widely applied recently to reduce friction and improve reliability of machine components such as thrust bearings, mechanical face seals and piston rings, etc. In this paper, numerical analysis is carried out to investigate the effect of number of dimples on the lubrication characteristics of parallel thrust bearing using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT. Pressure distributions of present analysis are physically consistent than those obtained from numerical analysis of Reynolds equation. The overall lubrication characteristics are highly affected by number of dimples and their locations. The results can be use in design of optimum dimple characteristics to improve thrust bearing performance and further researches are required.

  • In this paper, we investigated the friction characteristics of $W100^{\circ}{\o}L25m$ ellipse type surface pattern, on bearing steel. These characteristics are researched by utilizing a pin-on-disk wear test machine, under various velocities and other conditions. The reduction of friction is a necessary requirement for the improved efficiency of industrial parts. As the speed increases, there is a decrease in the effect of the dimple of friction characteristic in low velocity, with substantially little change to density. Conversely, as the load increases, the test direction of ellipse type dimple pattern, resulting in a difference in the texture of these two components. At a dimple density of 7.5% the friction characteristic is easily demonstrated, with a consistent change in both speed and load.

  • In order to reduce friction and improve reliability, researchers have applied various surface texturing methods to highly sliding machine elements such as mechanical seals and piston rings. Despite extensive theoretical research on surface texturing, previous numerical results are only applicable to isothermal and iso-viscous conditions. Because the lubricant flow pattern of textured bearing surfaces is much more complicated than that for non-textured bearings, the Navier?Stokes equation is more suitable than the Reynolds equation for the former. This study carries out a thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication analysis to investigate the lubrication characteristics of a single micro-dimpled parallel thrust bearing cell. The analysis involves using the continuity, Navier?Stokes, energy, temperature?viscosity relation, and heat conduction equations with the commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FLUENT. This study discretizes these equations using the finite volume method and solves them using the SIMPLE algorithm. The results include finding the streamlines, pressure and temperature distributions, and variations in the friction force and leakage for various dimple radii and depths. Increasing the dimple radius and decreasing the depth causes a recirculation flow to form because of a strong vortex, and the oil temperature greatly increases compared with the non-textured case. The present numerical scheme and results are applicable to THD analysis of various surface-textured sliding bearings and can lead to further study.

  • To improve mechanical properties of Cu-Al-Ni alloy by the grain refinement, Cu-Al-Ni SMA ribbons were fabricated by melt spinning apparatus. The variations of microstructure, mechanical properties and transformation characteristics with the condition of rapid solidification and annealing time-temperature were investigated in Cu-Al-Ni SMA ribbons. The ribbons fabricated by melt spinning obtained around 1.5nm in width and 50-60${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in thickness. With increasing wheel speed in order of 10m/s, 15m/s, 20m/s, 30m/s and 3m/s, the grain size was decreased in order of 10${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 6.25${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 5.5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. $M_{s}$ and $A_{s}$ temperature were decreased with decreasing grain size. By X-ray diffraction test, ordered $\beta$$_1$ phase was observed in all the SMA ribbons and the volume friction of it was increased with increasing wheel speed. With increasing wheel speed, strain was increased from 4.2% to 5.8% and fracture mode has changed from mixture of intergranular and dimple fracture to mixture of fiber structure and dimple fracture. The grain size of ribbon heat-treated at $600^{\circ}C$ was increased with increasing time. In the heat-treated ribbons at 55$0^{\circ}C$, ${\gamma}$$_2$ phases were observed.d.d.

  • Surface texturing of micro dimple or pore-shaped pattern was prepared using a fiber laser system. Surface texturing was designed to have a square pattern with a particular pitch distance for each corresponding density of 5, 10, 20, and 30%. Thermal damages such as bulges and burrs formed during laser irradiation were observed around the dimples. Thermal damages were later removed by lapping using alumina particles of $0.3{\mu}m$ in diameter. Oscillating friction tests were performed against heat-treated high speed steels under lubricated condition. The lubricant used was SAE 5W-30 automotive engine oil. Normal contact pressure and oscillating frequency was 0.28 MPa and 20 Hz, respectively. The tests were continued for 20 minutes, and friction plots were recorded for examination. Results revealed that the coefficient of friction was lowered regardless of texturing density. Moreover, the lowest coefficient of friction was obtained for 10% density texturing. It is attributed to increased lubricity due to the introduction of surface texturing. In addition, it is concluded that the optimum texturing density and pattern must be found for the best lubricity and low friction.
