A micro-high performance liquid chromatography(Micro-HPLC) techniquie with solid phase extraction was reported which detected carbendazim and carbaryl at picogram levels. They were separated on microbore packed $C_{18}$ column($1.0mm\;I.\;D{\times}150mm$, $d_f=5{\mu}m$) using a 50% methanol mobile phase and detected at UV 220nm(${\alpha}=2.94$, $R_s=4.71$), while they were not resolved on analtical HPLC system(${\alpha}=1.27$, $R_s=0.76$). The detection thresholds of carbendazim and carbaryl were 0.5ng and 0.1ng on Micro-HPLC, therefore Micro-HPLC system was 20~40 told more sensitive than anayltical HPLC system. Sep-Pak $C_{18}$ catridge was found to be efficient in enriching carbendazim and carbaryl from dilute aqueous solution with 97.0% and 97.8% recoveries of them. The Sep-Pak $C_{18}$ catridge followed by the Micro-HPLC had been applied to the quantitative analysis of carbendazim and carbaryl in spiked juices and a commercial drinking water.
A micro-mixer with a quasi-active rotor was fabricated, and mixing characteristics were evaluated. The proposed micro-mixer combines an active type micro-mixer with a passive type micro-mixer. The micro-rotor, which is a moving part of an active type micro-mixer, is added in a micro-chamber of a passive type vortex micro-mixer. The rotor rotated by inflows tangent to a chamber, causing strong perturbations. The micro-mixers were fabricated using photosensitive glass. Mixing efficiency of the micro-mixers was measured using an image analysis method. Mixing efficiency and characteristics of the micro-rotor mixer were compared with the vortex micro-mixer without a rotor. Mixing efficiency was reduced as Reynolds number increased at a low Reynolds number due to decrease of residence time. Mixing efficiency at higher Reynolds number, on the other hand, was improved even though residence time decreased since the contact surface between fluids increased by twisted flow. The perturbation induced by rotating rotor at greater than Re 200 improved the efficiency of the rotor mixer.
This study investigated changes of mechanical characteristics in the trabecular and cortical bone of the lumbar vertebrae of the ovariectomised(OVX) rat. In previous researches, there were many studies for morphology of osteoporotic bones based on Micro-CT (Micro - Computed Tomography). However, there were few studies for detecting and tracking changes of mechanical characteristics in the trabecular bone and cortical bone of the lumbar vertebrae for the OVX rat. For this study, one female Sprague-Dawley rat was used: an OVX rat. The 4th lumbar of the OVX rat was utilized as a specimen. Detecting and tracking changes of mechanical characteristics could be investigated in the trabecular and cortical bone of the lumbar vertebrae for an OVX rat using In-vivo Micro-CT. An OVX rat was scanned at week 0 (just before surgery), at week 4, and week 8 after surgery. Micro finite element(${\mu}\;FE$) analysis was used to investigate mechanical characteristics in the trabecular and cortical bone of the lumbar vertebrae for an OVX rat.
Recently, the world are preparing for new revolution, called as If (Information Technology), NT (Nano-Technology), and BT (Bio-Technology). NT can be applied to various fields such as semiconductor-micro technology. Ultra precision processing is required for NT in the field of mechanical engineering. Recently, together with radical advancement of electronic and photonics industry, necessity of ultra precision processing is on the increase for the manufacture of various kernel parts. Therefore, in this paper, stability of ultra precision cutting unit is investigated, this unit is the kernel unit in ultra precision processing machine. According to alteration of shape and material about hinge, stability investigation is performed. In this paper, hinge shapes of micro stage in UPCU(Ultra Precision Cutting Unit) are designed as two types, where, hinge shapes are composed of round and rectangularity. Elasticity and strength are analyzed about micro stage, according to hinge shapes, by FE analysis. Micro stage in ultra precision processing machine has to keep hinge shape under cutting condition with 3-component force (cutting component, axial component, radial component) and to reduce modification against cutting force. Then we investigated its elasticity and its strength against these conditions. Material of micro stage is generally used to duralumin with small thermal deformation. But, stability of micro stage is investigated, according to elasticity and strength due to various materials, by FE analysis. Where, Used materials are composed of aluminum of low strength and cooper of medium strength and spring steel of high strength. Through this stability investigation, trial and error is reduced in design and manufacture, at the same time, we are accumulated foundation data for unit control.
In recent years, research to machine large-surface micro-features has become important because of the light guide panel of a large-scale liquid crystal display and the bipolar plate of a high-capacity proton exchange membrane fuel cell. In this study, in order to realize the systematic design technology and performance improvements of an ultra-precision machine for machining the large-surface micro-features, a structural characteristic analysis was performed using its virtual prototype. The prototype consisted of gantry-type frame, hydrostatic feed mechanisms, linear motors, brushless DC servo motor, counterbalance mechanism, and so on. The loop stiffness was estimated from the relative displacement between the tool post and C-axis table, which was caused by a cutting force. Especially, the causes of structural stiffness deterioration were identified through the structural deformation analysis of sub-models.
Manufacturing process for milli components has recently gained researcher's focus with the increasing tendency toward highly integrated and micro-scaled parts for electronic devices. The milli-components need more precise manufacturing process than the conventional manufacturing process since the parts require higher dimensional accuracy than the conventional ones. In order to enhance the forming accuracy and productivity, various forming procedures proposed and studied by many researchers. In this paper, forming analysis of milli-components has been studied with a new micro-former. In modeling of progressive dies, multi-stage forming sequence has been analyzed with finite element analysis by LS-DYNA3D. The analysis proposes the sequential die and part shapes with the corresponding punch force and dimensional accuracy. The analysis also considers the effect of elastic dies on the dimensional accuracy of the formed parts. The analysis result demonstrates that the elastic analysis in the milli-forming process is indispensable for accurate forming analysis. The analysis procedure in the paper will provide good information in design of a new micro-former and milli-component
This paper presents a micro air pump based on the synthetic jet to supply reactant at the cathode side for micro fuel cells. The synthetic jet is a zero mass flux device that converts electrical energy into the momentum. The synthetic jet actuation is usually generated by a traditional PZT-driven actuator, which consists of a small cylindrical cavity, orifices and PZT diaphragms. Therefore, it is very important that the design parameters are optimized because of the simple configuration. To design the synthetic jet micro air pump, a numerical analysis has been conducted for flow characteristics with respect to various geometries. From results of numerical analysis, the micro air pump has been fabricated by the PDMS replication process. The most important design factors of the micro air pump in micro fuel cells are the small size and low power consumption. To satisfy the design targets, we used SP4423 micro chip that is high voltage output DC-AC converter to control the PZT. The SP4423 micro chips can operate from $2.2{\sim}6V$ power supply(or battery) and is capable of supplying up to 200V signals. So it is possible to make small size controller and low power consumption under 0.1W. The size of micro air pump was $16{\times}13{\times}3mm^3$ and the performance test was conducted. With a voltage of 3V at 800Hz, the air pump's flow rate was 2.4cc/min and its power consumption was only 0.15W.
Existence of physical moving parts (ex. check valve) produces several problems (mechanical abrasion, deterioration of reliability, limited temperature performances etc.) in driving pumps. To overcome such problems, we proposed a valveless piezoelectric micro-pump which has new type volume transferring mechanism. The proposed micro-pump has a double faced disk type vibrator that can generate peristaltic motion formed by traveling wave in each surface of a disk. This type of micro-pump is able to apply to a fluid supply system that provides two different kinds of fluid simultaneously. In this paper, we propose a simple and novel design of piezoelectric micro-pump that is peristaltically by piezoelectric actuators and allows the removal of the need for valves of other physically moving parts. The finite elements analysis on the proposed pump model was carried out to verify its operation principle using the commercial analysis software.

Concrete is a heterogeneous material consisting of coarse aggregate, mortar matrix and interfacial zones at the meso level. Though studies have been done to interpret the fracture process in concrete using meso level models, not much work has been done for simulating the macroscopic behaviour of reinforced concrete structures using the meso level models. This paper presents a procedure for the mesoscopic analysis of reinforced concrete beams using a modified micro truss model. The micro truss model is derived based on the framework method and uses the lattice meshes for representing the coarse aggregate (CA), mortar matrix, interfacial zones and reinforcement bars. A simple procedure for generating a random aggregate structure is developed using the constitutive model at meso level. The study reveals the potential of the mesoscopic numerical simulation using a modified micro truss model to predict the nonlinear response of reinforced concrete structures. The modified micro truss model correctly predicts the load-deflection behaviour, crack pattern and ultimate load of reinforced concrete beams failing under different failure modes.
