  • A very high resolution weather analysis system (VHRAS) of 50 m horizontal resolution is established based on LAPS. VHRAS utilizes the 3 hourly forecast data of the Unified Model (UM) of the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) with the horizontal resolution of 12 km as initial guess fields. The analysis system ingests the automatic weather station (AWS) data as input observations. The analysis system operates every hour for Seoul, Korea region in real time basis. It takes less than 10 minutes for one analysis cycle. The size of grid of the analysis domain is $800{\times}660$, respectively. The analysis results from December 2010 to February 2011 showed that the mean biases of temperature, maximum and minimum temperature were -0.07, 1.6, $0.2^{\circ}C$, respectively. The temperature in the central part of the city revealed relatively higher value than that of the surrounding mountainous areas, which showed a heat island feature. The heat island appears in zonal direction since the central city region is developed along a large river. Along the heat island, the eastern region was warmer than the western region. The warmer temperature in the western part of the heat island was caused by anthropogenic heat change in conjunction with the change of land use. This system will provide more reliable weather data and information in Seoul.

  • This study is a part of "Early Warning Service for Weather Risk Management in Climate-smart Agriculture", describes the delivery techniques from 840 catchment scale weather warning information using 150 counties unit special weather report(alarm, warning) released from KMA(Korea Meteorological Administration) and chronic weather warning information based on daily weather data from 76 synoptic stations. Catchment weather hazard warning service express a sequential risk index map generated by countries report occurs and report grade(alarm, warning) convert to catchment scale using zonal summarizing method. Additional services were chronic weather warning service at crop growth and accumulated more than 4 weeks, based on an unsuitable weather conditions, representing a relative risk compared to its catchment climatological normal conditions (normal distribution ) in addition to special weather report. Service provided by a real-time catchment scale map overlaid with VWORLD open platform operated by Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. Also provide a foundation for weather risk information to inform individual farmers to farm located within the catchment zone warning occur.

  • The COMS(Communication, Ocean & Meteorological Satellite)is the geostationary satellite which will be performing three main objectives such as meteorological service, ocean monitoring and Ka-band satellite communications. This paper presents the analysis of the electromagnetic radiated compatibility between COMS satellite and the ARIANE 5 launch vehicle. As a conclusion, a good level of confidence can be given at present time to demonstrate the compatibility between the spacecraft and the launcher, and vice versa. No threat has been identified regarding the other units powered during launch mode.

  • COMS(Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite) is the geostationary satellite for the mission of satellite communication, ocean monitoring, and meteorological service. It is scheduled to be launched at the end of 2008. Ocean payload of COMS named as GOCI(Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) observes ocean color and derives the chlorophyll concentrlition, the concentration of dissolved organic material and so on. In operational oceanography, satellite derived data products are used to provide forecasting and now casting of the ocean and coastal water state. In this work, conceptual design of structural part of GOCI is carried out and two baseline concepts are proposed. The one is dioptric module that uses lens system and the other is TMA(Three Mirror Anastigmat) module that uses mirror system. Trade-off studies between two concepts are investigated by considering optical and mechanical performances. Finally, on-going tasks and future development plan are briefly discussed.

  • Meteorological Joint Frequency Function required indispensably in long-term air quality prediction models were discussed for practical application in Korea. The algorithm, proposed by Turner(l964), is processed with daily solar insolation and cloudiness and height basically using Pasquill's atmospheric stability classification method. In spite of its necessity and applicability, the computer program, called STAR(STability ARray), had some significant difficulties caused from the difference in meteorological data format between that of original U.S. version and Korean's. To cope with the problems, revised STAR program for Korean users were composed of followings; applicability in any site of Korea with regard to local solar angle modification; feasibility with both of data which observed by two classes of weather service centers; and examination on output format associated with prediction models which should be used.

  • This study shows the comparison between expected and actual capacity factors of a wind farm through wind resource analyzation. The expected capacity factor comes from an 'automatic weather system' run by the Korean national weather service and a 'meteorological mast' run by a project owner. Based on this comparison and analysis, the importance of meteorological mast micro-siting and selection of wind turbine class and type, will be studied along with presenting important implications for wind farm expansion and development.

  • The COMS(Communication, Ocean & Meteorological Satellite) is the geostationary satellite which will be performing three main objectives such as meteorological service, ocean monitoring and Ka-band satellite communications. This paper reports on the hardware architecture of the system electrical ground support equipment(EGSE) for the COMS satellite. EGSE is used to check out satellite during the development prior to lunch. The EGSE represented in this paper consist of two parts. First, I will deal with the OCOE(Overall Check Out Equipment) system which controls and operates the all EGSE system. In second part, we will introduce the SCOE(Specific Check Out Equipment) systems which can test the specific subsystems of the COMS satellite.

  • Segmented planar imaging detector for electro-optical reconnaissance (SPIDER) is an emerging technology for optical imaging. However, this novel detection approach is faced with degraded imaging quality. In this study, a 6 × 6 planar waveguide is used after each lenslet to expand the field of view. The imaging principles of field-plane waveguide structures are described in detail. The local multiple-sampling simulation mode is adopted to process the simulation of the improved imaging system. A novel image-reconstruction algorithm based on deep learning is proposed, which can effectively address the defects in imaging quality that arise during image reconstruction. The proposed algorithm is compared to a conventional algorithm to verify its better reconstruction results. The comparison of different scenarios confirms the suitability of the algorithm to the system in this paper.

  • In Korea, there are four institutions related to atmospheric science: the university's atmospheric science-related department, the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), the ROK Air Force Weather Group, and the Meteorological Industry Association. These four institutions have developed while maintaining a deep cooperative relationship with the Korea Meteorological Society (KMS) for the past 60 years. At the university, 6,986 bachelors, 1,595 masters, and 505 doctors, who are experts in meteorology and climate, have been accredited by 2022 at 7 universities related to atmospheric science. The KMA is carrying out national meteorological tasks to protect people's lives and property and foster the meteorological industry. The ROK Air Force Weather Group is in charge of military meteorological work, and is building an artificial intelligence and space weather support system through cooperation with universities, the KMA, and the KMS. Although the Meteorological Industry Association has a short history, its members, sales, and the number of employees are steadily increasing. The KMS greatly contributed to raising the national meteorological service to the level of advanced countries by supporting the development of universities, the KMA, the Air Force Meteorological Agency, and the Meteorological Industry Association.
