  • The observation of the new biotite isograd (chlorite + chloritoid = andalusite + biotite) in the Mungyong coal field requires the modification of Harte and Hudson's (1979) metapelite grid which eliminates the stability field of staurolite + cordierite assemblages. The newly proposed metapelite grid by Ahn and Nakamura (2000) can define more properly the isograd reaction observed from nature. We discuss first topological interrelations between synthetic system (FASHO-, KFASHO-, KFMASH system) on an isobaric section at 2kbar, where phase relations are well constrained. The following discussion is concentrated on the topological relations between stable reactions. At the last, we discuss the petrogenetic significance of the Ahn's petrogenetic grid compared with theoretically computed grids. Ahn's petrogenetic grid is consistent with synthetic and natural system, and is one of the excellent example of KFMASH approximation in metapelite.

  • The coal formation of the Deokpyeong area are interbedded along metapelites of the Ogcheon Supergroup, which are composed mainly of graphite, quartz, muscovite and associated with small amounts of biotite, chlorite, pyrite and barite. The ratios of $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$, $Al_2O_3/Na_2O$ and $K_2O/Na_2O$ of the coaly metapelite are variable and wide range from 1.80 to 10.21, from 27.8 to 388.8 and from 7.6 to 61.8, respectively. These coal formation were deposited in basin of marine environments, and the REE of these rocks are not influenced with metamorphism and hydrothermal alterations on the basis of $Al_2O_3$ versus La, La against Ce, the ratios of La/Ce (0.19 to 0.99) and Th/U (0.02 to 4.75). These rocks also show much variation in $La_N/Yb_N$ (1.19 to 22.89), Th/Yb (0.14 to 21.43) and La/Th (0.44 to 13.67), and their origin is explained by derivation from a mixture of sedimentary and igneous rocks. The wide range in trace and REE element characteristics as Co/Th (0.12 to 2.78), La/Sc (0.33 to 10.18), Sc/Th (0.57 to 5.73), V/Ni (8 to 2347), Cr/V (0.02 to 0.67) and Ni/Co (1.56 to 32.95) of these coaly metapelites argues for inefficient mixing of the various source lithologies during sedimentation. Deep to pale green barium-vanadium muscovites (vanadium-oellacherite) have been found in this coal formations. Modes of occurrence and grain size of muscovite are heterogeneous, but most of the barium and vanadium-bearing muscovites occur along the boundaries between graphite and quartz grains, ranging from 200 to $350{\mu}m$ in length and from 40 to $60{\mu}m$ in width. Results of X-ray diffraction data of the minerals characterized to be monoclinic system with $a=5.249{\AA}$, $b=8.939{\AA}$, $c=20.924{\AA}$ and ${\beta}=95.894^{\circ}$. Representative chemical formula of the muscovite was $(Na_{0.09}K_{1.44}Ba_{0.46})(Al_{2.75}Ti_{0.07}V_{0.56}Fe_{0.08}Mg_{0.50})(Si_{6.12}Al_{1.88})O_{22}$. The V possibly substitute octahedral Al, and the Ba is coupled substitution of $K^+Si^{4+}=Ba^{2+}Na^+Ca^{2+}$, which compositional ranges of V and Ba are from 0.42 to 0.69 and from 0.34 to 0.56 based on $O_{22}$, respectively. Formation mechanism of the barium-vanadium muscovites in the coaly metapelite is shown that the formed by high pressure and temperature from regional metamorphism origanated during diagenesis at the interface between a basinal brine and organic matter.

  • Clay mineral geothermometry using sericites and chlorites in Bobae sericite mine reveals that these clay minerals formed at relatively high temperature. It appears that sericites formed at around $200{\sim}350^{\circ}C$ and chlorites formed at around $250^{\circ}C$. X-ray diffraction study of these minerals reveals that sericite $2M_1$ type and chlorite IIb type are dominant phases. Both polytypes indicate that the precipitation temperatures of these minerals shows fairly good agreement with the estimated temperature by clay mineral geothermometry. The Bobae sericite mine was formed at relatively higher temperature than several non-metal ore deposits occurred in the southern part of Korea.

  • Origin, behavior and enrichment of environmental toxic elements from the Deokpyeong area were investigated on the basis of major, trace and rare earth element geochemistry. Coaly metapelites of the Deokpyeong area are subdivided into grey phyllite, dark grey phyllite, coaly slate and black slate, which are interbedded along the Ogcheon Supergroup. The coaly slate had been mined for coal, but mining is closed. The coaly and black slates are lower contents of $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$, and higher contents of LOI, CaO, $Na_2O$ and BaO as compared with the phyllitic rocks. Rare earth elements are highly enriched in the coaly and black slate. Average compositions (ppm) of minor and/or environmental toxic elements in the coaly and black slate are revealed as As=127, Ba=30,163, Cd=18, Cr=740, Cu=84, Mo=378, Pb=43, Sb=12, Se=44, U=144, V=8,147 and Zn=292, which are extremely high concentrations than those in the NASC compositions. Major elements (average enrichment index; 5.34) in the coaly metapelites are mostly depleted, excepting $P_2O_5$ and BaO, normalized by NASC. Rare earth elements (average enrichment index; 1.48) are enriched in the coaly slate. On the basis of NASC, minor and/or environmental toxic elements in the coaly metapelites were strongly enriched of all the elements with the exception of Co, Cs, Ni and Sr. Average enrichment index of trace elements in coaly metapelite is 31.51 (coaly slate; 51.94 and black slate; 15.46). Especially, enrichment index of potentially toxic elements (As, Ba, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Sb, Se, U, V and Zn) of the rock is 46.10 (grey phyllite; 7.15, dark grey phyllite; 4.77, coaly slate; 88.96 and black slate; 22.11). These coal formations were deposited in basin of boundary between terrestrial and marine environments deduced to carbon, sulfur (C/S=2.2 to 275.7), trace and rare earth elements characteristics. Irregular behavior and dispersion between major, minor and rare earth elements of those metapelites indicates a variable source materials, incomplete mixing of differential source and/or reequilibrium of diagenesis and metamorphism.

  • For the determination of metamorphic age of the metamorphic rocks distributed in the Ji-san area of Youngnam massif, Sm and Nd isotopic compositions were analyzed for the whole rock and garnet separates. As the result, we obtained 1799 + 11 Ma from the porphyroblastic gneiss, 1776 +30 Ma from the metapelite, 1714+35 Ma from the mafic granulite xenolith within the porphyroblastic gneiss, and 1776+30 Ma from the metapelite occurred as a xenolith within the quartzofeldspathic gneiss. There have been reports of geologic ages similar to such metamorphic ages of Jirisan area from the other portion of the Youngnam massif, which reveals that very intense metamorphism took place over the vast area of Youngnam massif during the period of 1.7-1.8 Ga ago. The granulite facies metomorphism of the Gyeonggi massif also shows the age similar to this period. Such resemblance in their metamorphic ages suggests that these massifs experienced similar tectonothermal events occurred at about the same Precambrian periods, which implies the possibility that the extension of the collision belt between the north and south China blocks does not extend through some places between the Youngnam and Gyeonggi massifs. On the other hand a quarzofeldspathic xenolith of porphyroblastic gneiss show 1928 +42 Ma which is older than above age of the metamorphism and is identical with the zircon U-Pb age of porphyroblastic gneiss indicating the formation age of the protolith of the porphyroblastic gneiss.

  • We investigated the zircon U-Pb ages of the metapelites from the Sungjeon-myeon Gangjin-gun, the southwestern Ogcheon belt, to provide geochronological constraints for the depositional age as well as the distribution of Late Paleozoic formation. Data from the detrital zircons are mostly concordant, yielding four major age groups: (1) Neoarchean (~2.5 Ga); (2) Paleoproterozoic (~1.86 Ga, Statherian); (3) Middle Devonian(~390 Ma); and (4) Late Paleozoic (~322 Ma, Serpukhobian). The youngest zircon age gives a weighted mean $^{206}Pb/^{238}U$ age of $322{\pm}4.8$ Ma (n=16, MSWD=4.9), indicating deposition age of Early Carboniferous(Serpukhobian) or after. Therefore, the metapelites is considered to be the lowest Formation of the late Paleozoic Pyeongan Supergroup correlated with the Manhang Formation of the Samcheock coal fields and the Oeumri Formation(the Middle to Late Carboniferous) of the Hwasun coal field.

  • The metapsammite distributed in the Yeongam-Gangjin area had been classified into age-unknown Yongamsan Formation, Seologri Formation and age-unknown Seogisan Formation, and these formations are reported as each other different formations. These formations have been renamed Precambrian Galdu or Permian Songjong Formations. In this study, we present detrital zircon SHRIMP U-Pb age data from the metapsammite to examine deposition time and stratigraphy. The analyzed U-Pb zircon ages dominantly reveal Paleoproterozoic ages of ca. 1.87Ga and the youngest detrital grains are constrained by the age of 246-265 Ma. The youngest age indicates late Permian or early Triassic for the deposition time. Therefore, the metapsammite in the Yeongam-Gangjin area is considered to be the upper formation of the late Paleozoic Pyeongan Group which is correlated with the Gohan-Donggo Formations or Nokam Formation of the Samcheock coal field and the Cheonunsan Formation of the Hwasun coal field. The metapsammite of the study area is the late Paleozoic Pyeongan Group by the zircon age rather than Precambrian Galdu and Permian Songjeong Formations are no longer meaningful. Therefore, we propose the upper Paleozoic 'metapelite' and 'metaspammite', or original formation name defined by 1:50,000 geological maps, instead of Galdu and Songjeong Formations.

  • Naturally occurring asbestos (NOA) occurs in rocks and soils as a result of natural weathering and human activities. The asbestos have been associated with ultramafic and mafic rocks, and carbonate rock. The previous studies on NOA were mainly limited to ultramafic and mafic rock-hosted asbestos in Korea. But, studies on carbonatehosted asbestos are relatively rare. Therefore, the purposes of this study were to investigate mineralogical characteristics of carbonate-hosted and metapelite-hosted NOA and to examine genesis of NOA occurred in the both rocks. The study area was Daerori, Seosan, Chungnam Province, Korea. The major rock formation consisted of limestone and schist which have been known to contain asbestos. Sampling was performed at outcrop which contained carbonate rock showing acicular asbestos crystals as well as pegmatitic intrusion that contacted with carbonate rock. PLM, XRD, EPMA, and EDS analyses were used to characterize mineral assemblages, mineralogical characteristics, and crystal habits of amphiboles and other minerals. BSEM images were also used to examine the genesis of asbestos minerals. The amphibole group was observed in all of the carbonate rocks, and actinolite and tremolite were identified in all rocks. These mineral habits were mainly micro-acicular crystals or secondary asbestiform minerals on the surface of non-asbestiform minerals appearing split end of columnar crystals produced by weathering. BSEM images showed residual textures of samples. The residual textures of carbonate rocks showed dolomite-tremolite-diopside mineral assemblages that formed during prograde metasomatism stage. Some carbonate rock also showed diopside-tremolite-talc mineral assemblages which were formed during retrograde metasomatism stage, as the residual textures. In result the presence of asbestos actinolite-tremolite in the carbonate rocks were confirmed in the areas where actinolite-tremolite asbestos was influenced by low temperature hydrothermal solution during metasomatism stage. These asbestos minerals showed the acicular asbestiform minerals, but even non-asbestiform minerals, a bundle or columnar shape, could transform to asbestiform minerals as potential NOA by weathering because the end of columnar shape of non-asbestiform minerals appeared as multiple acicular shaped fibers.

  • The geochemical high-grade uranium anormal zone has been reported in the Shinbo mine and its eastern areas, Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do located in the southwestern part of Ogcheon metamorphic zone, Korea. In this paper is reported the time-relationship between deformation and growth of metamorphic minerals in the eastern area of Shinbo mine, which consists of the Precambrian metasedimentary rocks (quartzite, metapelite, metapsammite) and the age-unknown pegmatite and Cretaceous porphyry which intrude them, and is considered the relative mineralization time on the basis of the previous research's result. The D1 deformation formed the straight-type Si internal foliation which is defined mainly as the arrangement of elongate quartz, biotite, opaque mineral in andalusite porphyroblast. The D2 deformation, which is defined by the microfolding of Si foliation, formed S2 crenulation cleavage. It can be divided into two sub-phases, early crenulation and late crenulation. The former occurs as the curvetype Si foliation in the mantle part of andalusite. The latter occurs as S1-2 composite foliation which warps around the andalusite. The andalusite porphyroblast began to grow under non-deformation condition after the formation of S1 foliation which corresponds to the straight-type Si foliation. It continued to grow before the late crenulation phase. The age-unknown pegmatite intruded after the D2 deformation and grew the fibrous sillimanite which random masks the S1-2 composite foliation. The D3 deformation formed F3 fold which folded the S1-2 composite foliation, D2 crenulation, fibrous sillimanite. It means that the intrusion of pegmatite related to the growth of the fibrous sillimanite took place during the inter-tectonic phase of D2 and D3 deformations. The retrograde metamorphism is recognized by the chloritization of biotite and two-way cleavage lamellae which is parallel to the S1-2 composite foliation and the F3 fold axial surface in the andalusite porphyroblast. It occurred during the D2 late crenulation phase and D3 deformation. In considering of the previous research's result inferring the most likely candidate for the uranium source rock as pegamatite, it indicates that the age-unknown pegmatite intruded during the inter-tectonic phase of D2 and D3 deformations, i.e. during the retrograde metamorphism related to the uplifting of crust, and formed the uranium ore zone around the Shinbo mine.

  • This paper examined the characteristics of ductile and brittle structural elements with detailed mapping by lithofacies classification to clarify the relationship between the geological structure and the geochemical high-grade uranium anormal zone and to provide the basic information on the flow of groundwater in the eastern area of Shinbo mine, Jinan-gun, Jeollabuk-do, Korea. It indicates that this area is mainly composed of Precambrian quartzite, metapelite, metapsammite, which show a zonal distribution of mainly ENE-WSW trend, and age unknown pegmatite and Cretaceous porphyry which intrude them. But the Cretaceous Jinan Group which unconformably covers them, contrary to assumption, could not be observed. The main ductile deformation structures of Precambrian metasedimentary rocks were formed at least through three phases of deformation [ENE striking regional foliation (D1) -> ENE or EW striking crenulation foliation (D2) -> WNW or EW trending open, tight, kink folds (D3)]. The predominant orientation of S1 regional foliation strikes ENE and dips south, being similar to the zonal distribution of Precambrian metasedimentary rocks. Most predominant orientation of high-angled brittle fracture (dip angle ${\geq}45^{\circ}$) [ENE (frequency: 24.3%) > NS (23.9%) > (N)NW (18.8%) > WNW (16.9%) > NE (16.1%) fracture sets in descending frequency order], which is closely related to the flow of groundwater, strikes ENE and dips south. It also agrees with the zonal distribution of metasedimentary rocks and the predominant orientation of S1 regional foliation. The next one strikes NS and dips east or west. Considering the controlling factor of the geochemical uranium anormal zone in the Shinbo mine and its eastern areas from the above structural data. the uranium source rock in these areas might be pegmatite and the geochemical uranium anormal zone in the Sinbo mine area could be formed by an secondary enrichment through the flow of pegmatite aquifer's groundwater into the Sinbo mine area like the previous research's result.
