Removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution by brown sea weeds (Hizikia fusiformis, Laminaria, and Undaria pinnatifida) was 80-96% for lead, cadmium, chromium and copper ions. Fifty percent of the adsorption was completed in 4 min. The uptake of lead and cadmium ions followed Langmuir adsorption. In the adsorption experiments using single and multi metal ions 80-95% of metal ions were removed, and the removal efficiency was the best for lead ion.
Pathways both mediated by and independent of transferrin(Tf) and the TfR have been described for the accumulation of iron. Although it is not clear whether the same systems take up iron and gallium, these pathways may suggest the contention that uptake of Ga-67 can, in fact, occur by both Tf-independent and Tf-dependent systems and may share with Fe-59 in part the same mechanism for uptake. The predominant system by which uptake of both radiometals occurs may be different in the degree of the transformation of tumor. Transformed(MMSV/3T3) and untransformed(BALB/3T3) cells were incubated with luM of Ga-67-citrate of Fe-59-chloride for 15 min. at $37^{\circ}C$ in either the presence or absence of Tf. After then, the monolayers were washed with HBSS or PBS, and the cells were solubilized in 1% SDS for gamma well counting and protein determinations. There were similarities, as well as differences, in the pattern of uptake of Fe-59 and Ga-67 presented both in ionic from and as bound to Tf. Both radiometals appeared gain to cells in either ionic or Tf-bound forms. Transformed cells appeared to accumulate more radiometal, either Ga-67 or Fe-59 in the presence of Tf than do the their untransforemd counterparts. Conversly the presentation of either radiometal in ionic form resulted in significantly greater accumulation of metal by the untransformed cells than those transformed. The efficiency for uptake of Ga-67 or Fe-59 in the absence of Tf was greater than for uptake of the Ga-Tf or Fe-Tf. However, the magnitude of difference in efficiency of uptake was greater for Fe-59(10-fold) than for Ga-67 (3-fold). Our results Supports the theory that both Tf-independent and Tf-dependent systems for the uptake of Ga-67 both systems operate oppositely between transformed cells and those untransformed, with uptake by the predominating in transformed cells by the Tf-mediated system and in untransformed cells by the Tf-independent. The uptake of Ga-67 by tumor may share with Fe-59 in part the same mechanism.

A study on the removal of heavy metals using alginic acid, a kind of polysaccharides, was performed. Alginic acid adsorbed 480 mg Pb/g dry mass at pH 4, which was about twice as high as uptake capacity of other biosorbents. Isothermal adsorption curve for lead ions was described by the Langmuir model equation and the experimental data well fitted to model equation. The adsorption of lead ions was an endothermic process since binding strength increased with temperature. The effect of alkali metal ions ($Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$) on lead sorption capacity was negligible and most adsorption process was completed in 30min. The uptake capacity of other metals such as, copper, mercury, strontium, and cesium ions using alginic acid was also investigated.
The biosorption of Pb and Cr by Sargassum thunbergii was investigated in a batch conditions. The Pb and Cr uptake capacity of Sargassum thunbergii was 232.5 mg Pb/g biomass and 91.6 mg Cr/g biomass, respectively. An adsorption equilibria was reached within about 0.5 hr for both the Pb and the Cr. The adsorption parameters for both the Pb and the Cr were determined according to the Langmuir and Freundlich model. With increasing pH values, more negative sites are becoming available for the adsorption of Pb and Cr. The selectivity of mixture solution showed an uptake order of Pb>Cu>Cr>Cd. Pb and Cr adsorbed by S. thunbergii could be recovered ken 0.1 M HCl, 0.1 M $HNO_3$ and 0.1M EDTA by a desorption process, and the efficiency of Pb desorption was above $95.8\%$, whereas the efficiency of the Cr desorption was below $50.7\%$.
To remove phosphate accumulated in the soil and water, Acinetobacter lwoffi PO8 possessing a high ability to accumulate phosphate was isolated from a active sludge. Bacterium was cultured in the liquid medium containing $150\;{\mu}g/mL$ of phosphate at $30^{\circ}C$ in different culture conditions to examine intracellular phosphate uptake. The initial pH in the range of $7.5{\sim}8.5$ was effective on the growth and phosphate uptake of the strain. Glycerol and arabinose used as a carbon sources showed 93 and 91% the phsphate uptake, respectively. Among the nitrogen sources, ammonium salt such as $NH_4NO_3$ and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ was effectively utilized on the phosphate uptake compared with amino compounds. The rate of phosphate uptake of $NH_4NO_3$, and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, was 95 and 96%, respectively The growth and Phosphate uptake ability in the strain were significantly promoted when metal ions were added in the medium; $Co^{2+}$, however, was not utilized by the strain. The capacity of phosphate uptake was enhanced to $10{\sim}20%$ when arginine, methionine, or lysine was added. Using $^{32}P$ to examine the uptake Pattern of intracellular phosphate, experiment result showed that polyphosphate was largely found in the fraction of intracellular inorganic phosphate of Acinetobacter lwoffi PO8.

Biochar, which has high alkalinity, has widely studied for amendment of soil that contaminated with heavy metals. The aim of this study is assessment of amendment for arsenic and heavy metals contaminated acidic agricultural soil using biochar that derived from buffalo weed (A. trifida L. var. trifida). Pot experiments were carried out including analysis of soil solution, contaminants fractionation, soil chemical properties and plant (lettuce) uptake rate. Arsenic and heavy metals concentrations in soil solution showed relatively low in biochar added experiments when compared to the control. In the heavy metals fractionation in soil showed decrease of exchangeable fraction and increase of carbonates fraction; however, arsenic fractionations showed constant. Soil chemical properties indicated that biochar could induce recovery of soil quality for plant growth in terms of soil alkalinity. However, phosphate concentration in biochar added soil decreased due to Ca-P precipitation by exchangeable calcium from biochar. Arsenic and heavy metals uptake rate of plant in the amended experiment decreased to 50% when compared to the control. Therefore biochar derived from buffalo weed can be used as amendment material for agricultural soil contaminated with arsenic and heavy metals. Precipitation of As-Ca and metal-carbonates are major mechanisms for soil amendment using char.

The potential use of Sargassum boveanum algae for the removal of uranium from aqueous solution has been studied by varying three independent parameters (pH, initial uranium ion concentration, S. boveanum dosage) using a central composite design (CCD) under response surface methodology (RSM). Batch mode experiments were performed in 20 experimental runs to determine the maximum metal adsorption capacity. In CCD design, the quantitative relationship between different levels of these parameters and heavy metal uptake (q) were used to work out the optimized levels of these parameters. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) of the proposed quadratic model revealed that this model was highly significant (R2 = 0.9940). The best set required 2.81 as initial pH(on the base of design of experiments method), 1.01 g/L S. boveanum and 418.92 mg/L uranium ion concentration within 180 min of contact time to show an optimum uranium uptake of 255 mg/g biomass. The biosorption process was also evaluated by Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherm models represented that the experimental data fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model of a suitable degree and showed the maximum uptake capacity of 500 mg/g. FTIR and scanning electron microscopy were used to characterize the biosorbent and implied that the functional groups (carboxyl, sulfate, carbonyl and amine) were responsible for the biosorption of uranium from aqueous solution. In conclusion, the present study showed that S. boveanum could be a promising biosorbent for the removal of uranium pollutants from aqueous solutions.
Solid beta-dicalcium silicate hydrate $(\beta-C_2SH)$ synthesized under hydrothermal conditions at $240^{\circ}C$ and Ca/Si=2 molar ratio shows cation exchange properties towards divalent metal cations such as Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, or Pb. The ability of metal cation uptake by the solid was found to be in the order: $Fe^{2+}$〉$Cu^{2+}$〉$Zn^{2+}$〉$Cd^{2+}$ = $Pb^{2+}$. Cesium selectivity of the solid was demonstrated in the presence of univalent cation such as $Li^+$, $Na^+$ and $K^+$ and divalent cations such as $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Ba^{2+}$, which are one hundred times more concentrated than the $Cs^+$. The uptake of $Cs^+$ is maximum in the presence of $Mg^{2+}$ whereas it is minimum in the presence of $K^+$. The different affinities of ${\beta}-C_2SH$ towards divalent metal cations can be used for the separation of those ions. Due to its selectivity for cesium it can be used in partitioning of radioactive Cs+ from nuclear wastes containing numerous cations. The mechanism of the metal cation exchange and cesium selectivity reactions by the solid is studied.
A MNNG (N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine) induced chromium resistant strain ($Cr^{r}18$) of unicellular cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans has been isolated and characterized. The resistant strain could grow (although restricted to $50\%$ of control) in chromium concentration (180${\mu}M$) lethal to the wild-type. Sublethal ($160{\mu}M$) concentration of $Cr^{6+}$ significantly reduced (13-$37.5$) all the photosynthetic pigments of A. nidulans with maximum reduction in phycoerythrin followed by ChI $\alpha$. Pigments of A. nidulans were drastically decreased in lethal concentration of Cr^{6+} with maximum reduction in phycoerythrin ($75\%$) and allophycocyanin ($67.5\%$). Resistant strain $Cr^{r}18$ resisted toxic effects of sublethal and lethal concentrations of $Cr^{6+}$ on photosynthetic pigments as revealed by less decrease in pigments as compared to A. nidulans. Effect of $Cr^{6+}$ stress was also studied on nitrogen assimilation and phosphate uptake. Sublethal concentration of $Cr^{6+}$ drastically reduced ($71.5\%$) nitrate uptake by A. nidulans while a decrease of $29\%$ was observed in strain $Cr^{r}18$. Short (2 day) exposure of A. nidulans and its resistant strain $Cr^{r}18\;to\;Cr^{6+}$ did not affect nitrate reductase and glutamine synthetase (transferase), whereas longer (10 day) exposure to $Cr^{6+}$ lowered activities of both enzymes in A. nidulans but not significantly in the strain $Cr^{r}18$. Ammonium uptake by both strains was not affected by $Cr^{6+}$. Thus, $Cr^{6+}$ affected photosynthetic pigments, nitrogen assimilation, and phosphate uptake of A. nidulans, while strain $Cr^{r}18$ was able to resist toxic effects of the metal. Advantages of using strain $Cr^{r}18$ for bioremediation purposes have been evaluated by studying $Cr^{6+}$ removal from the solution. Resistant strain $Cr^{r}18$ was able to remove $33\%$ more $Cr^{6+}$ than A. nidulans and thus it can prove to be a good candidate for bioremediation of $Cr^{6+}$ from polluted waters.
Absorption of $\textrm{Pb}^{2-}$ from aqueous solution was studied using Staphylococcus epidermidis. Cells of exponential phase were employed as absorbents. Uptake ratio defined as the ratio of amount of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ absorbed to that of initial $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$. Absorption of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ increased with increase in cell concentration. while amount of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ per unit cell mass decreased. Uptake ratio of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ augmented and then diminished after exhibiting a maximum as the pH of the solution increased. Equilibrium absorption of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ deviated from Freundlich isotherm especially at higher concentration of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ due to the precipitation phenomena. HCI and EDTA were founded to desorb $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ more effectively than $\textrm{Na}_{2}\textrm{CO}_{3}$ or $\textrm{NaHCO}_{3}$. After 10 cycles of absorption and desorption. $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ absorption capability remained almost unchanged and the biomass had leaked out 30-40 wt/%. Uptake ratio of Pb2+ decreased in the presence of other heavy metal ions due to the competitive absorption The inhibition of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ absorption appeared to have a strong correlation with ionic radius of the competing ions. Especially $\textrm{Cr}^{3-}$, $\textrm{Co}^{2+}$ or $\textrm{Fe}^{2+}$ having smaller ionic radius depressed more significantly the uptake of $\textrm{Pb}^{2+}$ than any other metal ions tested.
