SM45C steel rods being used generally for power transmission shafts and machine components was selected and welded by Butt-GMAW(Gas Metal Arc Welding) method. An estimation of fatigue life was studied by constructing S-N curve. Fatigue strength of base metal zone showed higher values than one of weld zone in low cycles between $10^4$ and $10^6$cycles. However, significant decrease in fatigue strength of base metal was found around $10^6$cycles, which were almost same as one of heat affected zone. This decrease was attributed that initial residual stress of the steel rods distributed by drawing process was diminished by continually applied load, and resulted in softening of base metal. The fatigue limit of the weld zone was highest in the boundary between deposited metal zone and heat affected zone, and followed by in the order of deposited metal zone, base metal zone, and heat affected zone. Based on these results, it is revealed that the stress for safety design of machine components using SM45C butt-welded steel rods must be selected within the region of the lowest fatigue limit of heat affected zone.
TZP/SUS- and ZT/SUS-functionally gradient materials (FGM) were fabricated by pressureless sintering in Ar-atmosphere. The sintering defects such as warping, frustrum formation, splitting and cracking which originated from shrinkage and sintering behaviors of metal and ceramics different from each other could be controlled by the adjustment with respect to the particle size and phase type of zirconia. The residual stresses generated on the metal and ceramic regions in FGM were characterized with X-ray diffraction method, and relaxed as the thickness and number of compositional gradient layer were increased. The residual stress states in TZP/SUS-FGM have irregular patterns by means of the different sintering behavior and cracking at ceramic-monolith. While in ZT/SUS-FGM, compressive stress is induced on ceramic-monolith by the volume expansion of monoclinic ZrO2 at phase transformation. Also, compressive stress is induced on metal-monolith by the constraint of warping which may be created to the metal direction by the difference of coefficient of thermal expansions. As a consequence, it has been verified that the residual stress generated on FGM is dominantly influenced by the thickness and number of compositional gradient layer, and the sintering defects and residual stress can be controlled by the constraint of the difference of shrinkage and sintering behaviors of each component.
Several fabrication processes, corresponding nanostructural features and multifunctionality as well has been investigated for oxide ceramic based nanocomposites with metal nanodispersion (i.e., ceramic/metal nanocomposites). Transition metal (Ni, Co, etc) dispersed alumina and zirconia based nanocomposites have been synthesized by reducing and hot-press sintering of ceramic and metal oxide mixtures prepared by several method. Improved fracture strength (1.1 and 1.9 GPa for $Al_2O_3/Ni$ and $ZrO_2/Ni$ nanocomposites, respectively) of these composites have been achieved according to their nanostructures. In addition, ferromagnetic characteristic has been kept. The variation of magnetization with an applied stress has found to be more sensitive as smaller as the magnetic metal dispersion is. This result thus suggests the possibility of fracture and/or stress sensing of the composites by simple magnetic measurement.
Laser shock peening is useful to improve fatigue characteristic of multiple number of metals and alloys. This process induces a compressive residual stress on the metal surface, and when tensile load is applied, growth of crack is delayed and which changes the characteristic of the metal surface. It is an innovative surface treatment technique for strengthening metals. Specimens of SM45C are used in this study. The effect of an inertial tamping layer on the residual stress field using laser shock peening setup and Nd:YAG laser power is evaluated. Residual stress distribution measured by X-ray diffraction. As a result of this study it can be presented that following condition of Nd:YAG laser power and inertial tamping layer parameters, compressive residual stress is generated on the surface of the SM45C. Results to experimental data indicate that laser shock peening has great potential as a means of improving the mechanical performance of the metal surface.
Since dishing in the CMP process is a major factor that hinders the uniformity of the semiconductor thin film, many studies have focused this issue to improve the non-uniformity of the film due to dishing. In the metal layer, the dishing mainly occurs in the central part of the metal due to a difference in a selection ratio between the metal and the dielectric, thereby generating a step on the surface of the metal layer. Factors that cause dishing include the shape of the thin film, the chemical reaction of the slurry, thermal deformation, and the rotational speed of the pad and head, and dishing occurs due to complex interactions between them. This study analyzed the stress generated on the metal layer surface in the CMP process using ANSYS software, a commercial structure analysis program. The stress caused by the vertical load applied from the pad was analyzed by changing the area density and line width of the dummy metal. As a result of the analysis, the stress in the active region decreased as the pattern density and line width of the dummy metal increased, and it was verified that it was valid compared with the previous study that studied the dishing according to the dummy pattern density and line width of the metal layer. In conclusion, it was confirmed that there is a relationship between dishing and normal stress.
In this study, the residual stress and the acoustic emission Charactreistics from fatigue crack propagation were investigated, bused on the welded material of STS316L. The residual stress of welding locations could be evaluated by ultrasonic parameters, such as L$_{CR}$ wave velocity and L$_{CR}$ wave frequency; the residual stress between base metal and weld metal was evaluated. In the fatigue tests, three types of signals were observed, regardless of specimen condition, base metal, and weld metal. Based on NDE analysis of AE signals by the time-frequency analysis method, it should also be possible to evaluate, in real-time, the crack propagation and final fracture process, resulting from various damages and defects in welded structural members.
Since the ceramic/metal joint material is made at a high temperature, the residual stress develops when it is cooled from bonding temperature to room temperature due to remarkable difference of thermal expansion coefficient between ceramic and metal. As residual stress at ceramic/metal joints influences the strength of joints, it is important to estimate residual stress quantitatively. In this study, it is attempted to estimate joint residual stress of Si$_3$N$_4$STS304 joints quantitatively and to compare the strength of joints. The difference of residual stress is measured when repeated thermal cycl is loaded, under the conditions of the practical use of the ceramic/metal joint. The residual stress increases at 1 cycle of thermal load but decreases in 3 cycles to 10 cycles of thermal load. And 4-point bending test is performed to examine the influence of residual stress on fracture strength. As a result, it is known that the stress of joint decreases as the number of thermal cycle increases.
This paper presents the results of finite element analysis for the effects of hydrostatic test and operating condition on the weld residual stress at dissimilar metal weld of a pressurizer safety nozzle in a nuclear power plant. For the study, the weld residual stress at ambient condition was analyzed using ABAQUS in the first place. After the weld residual stress analysis, the hydrostatic test condition and operating condition was applied to the same model one after another. The weld residual stress was observed to change due to the successive hydrostatic test and operating condition. The axial residual stresses on inner surface of the dissimilar metal weld and HAZ region were decreased by hydrostatic test and operating condition, which gives beneficial effect on preventing primary water stress corrosion cracking.
