  • In this paper, three-dimensional finite element analysis of thread rolling process of a 12 point flange head bolt is conducted using a rigid-plastic finite element method based metal forming simulator AFDEX 3D. A whole sequence of cold forming processes of a long shaft bolt composed of four forging stages and final thread rolling process is simulated to reveal the mechanism of thread formation. A mesh density control function is applied near the major plastic deformation region to achieve computational efficiency. It has been shown both numerically and experimentally that longitudinal lengthening or shortening is negligible in thread rolling.

  • It is widely recognized that conventional means for determining the minimum ignition energy(MIE) of powder are time-consuming and require operational skill. As a variety of new fine powders are being produced day by day in industry, there is an urgent need to a quicker and more economical means to measure MIE. To meet this requirement, we have developed a measurement system which employs a novel method to create an air/dust mixture in a miniature combustion box. In this system, the powder to be tested input into a hopper made of metal mesh, and successively fed downward to form a thin, curtain-like dust/air mixture by vibration. With this new apparatus, three type of powders -Lycopodium, Anthraquinone, and Polyacrylonitrile-were tested and the MIE data were compared with those taken with a conventional apparatus(the Hartmann tube). Two of them agreed satisfactory, but the other, anthraquinone, showed quite different values supposedly due to the agglomeration of the powder particles by static-charge.

  • This paper presents results of an experimental study to evaluate a new retrofit technique for strengthening shear deficient short concrete beams and columns. In this technique a mortar jacket reinforced with expanded steel meshes is used for retrofitting. Twelve short reinforced concrete specimens, including eight retrofitted ones, were tested. Six specimens were tested under a constant compressive axial force of 15% of column axial load capacity based on original concrete gross section, $A_g$, and the concrete compressive strength, ${f_c}^{\prime}$. Main variables were the spacing of ties in original specimens and the volume fraction of expanded metal in jackets. Original specimens failed before reaching their nominal calculated flexural strength, $M_n$, and had very poor ductility. Strengthened specimens reached their nominal flexural strength and had a ductility capacity factor of up to 8 for the beams and up to 5.5 for the columns. Based on the test results, it can be concluded that expanded steel meshes can be used effectively to strengthen shear deficient concrete members.

  • Delaunay triangulation is combined with an adaptive finite element method for analysis of two-dimensional crack propagation problems. The content includes detailed descriptions of the proposed procedure which consists of the Delaunay triangulation algorithm and an adaptive remeshing technique. The adaptive remeshing technique generates small elements around the crack tips and large elements in the other regions. Three examples for predicting the stress intensity factors of a center cracked plate, a compact tension specimen, a single edge cracked plate under mixed-mode loading, and an example for simulating crack growth behavior in a single edge cracked plate with holes, are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the procedure. These examples demonstrate that the proposed procedure can improve solution accuracy as well as reduce total number of unknowns and computational time.

  • In metal forming, there ar problems with recurrent geometric characteristics and without explicitly prescribed boundary conditions. In such problems, so-called recurrent boundary conditions must be introduced. The present study deals with nonsteady-state three-dimensional finite element analysis for extrusion of a trocoidal helical gear through a curved die. The boundary-directed remeshing scheme based on the modular remeshing technique is developed to reduce the errors arising in fitting old and new mesh systems. The computed extrusion pressure in reaching the near steady-state loading stage is compared with the results of the experiment and the steady-state analysis. The three-dimensional deformed pattern involving warping at the extruded end due to torsional deformation mode is demonstrated.

  • A vertically-walled auto-body part is one of the most difficult stamping parts because of angle change, wall curl, and twisting of the blank after springback as well as fracture and wrinkle. In this study, computational simulations of the vertically-walled auto-body part are carried out focusing on angle change, wall curl, and twisting after springback. Binderwrap blank shape is used in forming analysis for precise initial contacts between punch and blank. An adaptive mesh method is used in springback analysis for precise calculation of bending moments. In springback analysis, the differences of 2 and 3 dimensional analysis are compared and the effects of blank holdig force and friction coefficient are evaluated. In order to verify the validity of simulation results, they are compared with measured ones. The predicted thickness distribution and formed shape are agreed well with those of the measurement. The Predicted springback amount is less than that of the measurement.

• This study attempts to examine and to analyze the characteristics of transparent materials and its methods to apply in space. the ability to see through a physical element, whether it is clear glass, sandblasted acrylic, or a delicate fabric, can have a dramatic and sensory effect on the overall perception of a space. The various range of Transparent materials and product in glass, plastic, fabric, and grid now gives us the potential to maximize the flow of light in our enclosed space. This research will explore how transparent, translucent, and semi-opaque elements can be used within the interior with full range of see-through materials. The transparent materials can be divided in two level - as structural elements and as stylish accessories. A glass partition or floor, metal mesh stairs can create divisions or link one space to another while maintaining effective levels of natural light. there is also various level of products from glass chair to basin. With the enthusiasm for using transparent materials, transparent materials will be more decorative and powerful application while still maximize the highest possible flow of light.

  • Shell finite elements are widely used for the analysis of thin section objects such as sheet metal parts, automobile bodies and et al. due to their computational efficiency. Since many of input data for finite element analysis are given as solid models or triangulated surface models, one should extract midsurface information from these input data initially and then construct shell meshes on the extracted midsurfaces. In this paper, a method of generating shell elements on midsurfaces directly from input models have been proposed. In order to construct shell meshes, the input models should be triangulated on surfaces first, and then tetrahedral elements are generated by using an advancing front method, and finally mid shell surfaces are obtained from tetrahedral meshes. Some examples are given to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • This paper describes the design and manufacturing of a focused-ion-beam machining system which can make small features of nano size. We use a SIMION simulator in order to obtain the design data of an ion column. The simulation result shows that the focal length of ion beam decreases as the applied voltage of object lens increases. Finally, we obtained the good images of a mesh of 50 micrometers by using the adjustment of applied voltage, acceleration power, and dimension of each elements.
