An enhanced continuum model for the size dependent strengthening of particle reinforced composites is presented. The model accounts explicitly for the enhanced strength in a discretely defined "punched zone" around the particle in a metal matrix composite as a result of geometrically necessary dislocations developed through a CTE mismatch. The size of the punched zone presents an intrinsic length scale, and this results in the size dependence of the overall behavior of the composite. Results show that predicted 0.2% offset yield stresses are increasing with smaller inclusions and larger volume fractions and this length-scale effect on the enhanced strength can be observed by explicitly including GND region around the particle.
The metal matrix composites(MMC) are currently receiving a great deal of attention. These composites possess exellent mechanical and physical properties such as modulus, strength, wear resistance and thermal stability, which make them very attractive for use in automotive piston. In this study, $Al/{Al_2}{O_3}$(15%) composites are fabricated by the squeeze casting method. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength and ductility are performed at room and elevated temperature($250^{\circ}C$ and $350^{\circ}C$), respectively. Through thermomechanical analyser, thermal expansion coefficient of $Al/{Al_2}{O_3}$ composites are conducted for ranging from room temperature to ($400^{\circ}C$.And bending fatigue tests are also performed by the rotary bending machine at room temperature. The tensile strength and elastic modulus have been improved up to 38% and 35% by the addition of the reinforcements, respectively. Thermal expansion coefficients of MMCs which is located normal and parralel to the applied pressure are showed slightly different less than 10%. Fatigue strengh of the composite was improved by about 20% compared with that of unreinforced Al alloy. The results of this study will be used to understand the basic fracture behavior of MMCs and eventually to expand the applocation of MMCs as a machine parts undertaken various loadings.
A cheallenge in the aerospace field is to design new composites satisfying specific and sometimes conflicting properties. The key steps are ⅰ)the understanding and the control of the reaction between the reinforcement and the embedding matrix, ⅱ) the achievement of a coherent and robust matrix. The problems encountered to prepare particulate, 1D, 2D and 3D reinforced composites using polymeric are discussed. Emphasis is given to the control of the micro/nanostructure using Raman microspectrometry and depth-sensing microindentation, in order to get information on the micromechanics and fiber structure simultaneously, within ceramic (CMC's) and metal matrix (MMC's) composites.
6061Al-SiCP metal matrix composite materials(MMCs) were fabricated by injecting SiCP particles directly into the atomized spray. The main attraction of this technique is the rapid fabrication of semi-finished, composite products in a combined atomization, particulate injection(10 $\mu\textrm{m}$, 40 $\mu\textrm{m}$, SiCP) and deposition operation. Conclusions obtained are as follows; The microstructure of the unreinforced spray formed 6061Al alloy consisted of relatively fine(50 $\mu\textrm{m}$) equiaxed grains. By comparision, the microstructure of the I/M materials was segregated and consisted of relatively coarse(150 $\mu\textrm{m}$) grains. The probability of clustering of SiCP particles in co-sprayed metal matrix composites increased it ceramic particle size(SiCP) was reduced and the volume fraction was held constant. Analysis of overspray powders collected from the spray atomization and deposition experiments indicated that morphology of powders were nearly spherical and degree of powders sphercity was deviated due to composite with SiCp particles. Interfacial bonding between matrix and ceramics was improved by heat treatment and addition of alloying elements(Mg). Maximum hardness values [Hv: 165 kg/mm2 for Al-10 $\mu\textrm{m}$ SiCp Hv--159 kg/mm2 for Al-40 $\mu\textrm{m}$SiCp] were obtained through the solution heat treatment at $530^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs and aging at $178^{\circ}C$, and there by the resistance were improved.
In this study, aluminum borate whisker reinforced Mg-3Al-2Ag-1Zn matrix composites were fabricated by the squeeze infiltration technique. The purpose is to develop materials for elevated temperature applications. Microstructure observation revealed successful fabrication of the metal matrix composites, namely no cast defects such as porosity and matrix/reinforcement interface delamination etc. High temperature hardness and creep rupture properties were improved significantly with addition of Ag to the Al borate whisker reinforced Mg alloy composite. $Mg_3Ag$ phase formed during aging heat treatment could improve creep properties of the Mg matrix composites.
A both mixing process of electro-magnetic stirring and mechanical process technique were used to fabricate particulate metal matrix composites(PMMCs) for variation of particle size. The PMMCs were tested for their tensile test for with and without heat treatment with T6. PMMCs fabrication processing conditions for both electrical and mechanical process are also suggested. In order to thixoforming of PMMCs, fabricated billet are reheated by using the optimal coil designed as a function of length between PMMC billet and coil surface, coil diameter and billet length. The effect of reinforcement distribution on billet temperature variation are investigated with calculated solid fraction theory proposed as a function of matrix alloy and volume fraction of reinforcement.
The electro-magnetic stirring and mechanical process were applied to fabricate particulate metal matrix composites(PMMCs) with various particle size. The mechanical test on PMMCs was carried out in order to clarify the effect of 76 heat treatment on tensile behaviors. In order to study the thixoforming of PMMCs, fabricated billet are reheated by using the coil designed as a function of length between PMMC billet and coil surface, coil diameter and billet length. The effect of reinforcement distribution on billet temperature variation has been investigated with the calculated solid fraction theory based on a function of matrix alloy and volume fraction of reinforcement.
Aluminum based metal matrix composites(MMCs) are well known for their high specific strength, stiffness and hardness. They are gaining further importance because of their high wear resistance. In this study, Al/Saffil-20%, Al/Saffil-5%/Al2O3(particle type)-15% and Al/Saffil-5%/SiC(particle type)-15% hybird MMCs' wear behavior were characterized by the pin-on-disk test under various normal load The superior wear resistance was exhibited at Al/Saffil-5%/SiC(particle type)-15% MMCs. And this MMCs' predominant wear mechanism is subsurface cracking in the low load wear regime. Others(Al/Saffil-20%, Al/Saffil-5%/Al2O3(particle type)-15%) showed the similar wear resistance with each other at the same test condition. In the low load & room temperature condition, the wear resistance was improved due to the high hardness of the ceramic reinforcements. As the test load increased, the wear properties were governed by the wear properties of matrix.
The SiCp/AC8A composites were fabricated by the pressureless metal infiltration process successfully. The effect of additional Mg, which were mixed with SiC particles to promote interfacial wetting between the reinforcement and matrix alloy, and particle size on the mechanical properties was investigated. By increasing the additional Mg content the hardness of SiCp/AC8A composites was increased due to the hard reaction products, but the bending strength was decreased by the excess reaction of Mg and high porosity level when the additional Mg content is over 7%. The Hardness and bending strength was increased by decreasing the size of SiC particle.
In this study, we describe the conventional hot pressing (CHP) of layered $Al-B_4C$ composites and their characterization. The matrix alloy Al-5 wt.%Cu was prepared from elemental powder mixtures. The metal and B4C powders were mixed to produce either $Al-Cu-10vol.%B_4C$ or $Al-Cu-30vol.%B_4C$ combinations. Then, these powder mixtures were stacked as layers in the hot pressing die to form a two-layered composite. Hot pressing was carried out under nitrogen atmosphere to produce $30\times40\times5mm$ specimens. Microstructural features and age hardening characteristics of composites were determined by specimens cut longitudinally. The flexural strength of both layered composites and their monolithic counterparts were investigated via three point bending tests. In the case of layered specimens of both $10vol.%B_4C$ and $30vol.%B_4C$ containing layers were loaded for three-point test. The results show that a homogeneous distribution of $B_4C$ particles in the matrix alloy which is free of pores, can be obtained by CHP method. The ageing behavior of the composites was found to be influenced by the reinforced materials, i.e. higher hardness values were reached in 8 hrs for the composites than that for the matrix alloy. Flexural strength test showed that two-layered composites exhibited improved damage tolerance depending on layer arrangement. Microstructural investigation of the fracture surfaces of the bending specimens was performed by means of scanning electron microscope (SEM). While layer with lower reinforcement content exhibited large plastic deformation under loading, the other with higher reinforcement content exhibited less plastic deformation.
