  • Flux cored arc welding (FCAW), which is used widely in many fields, such as shipyards, bridge structures, construction machinery, and plant industry, is an alternative to shielded metal arc welding (SMAW). FCAW is used largely in the welding of carbon and alloy steel because it can be welded in all poses and obtain excellent quality in the field under a range of working conditions. In this study, the mechanical properties of welded parts were analyzed after different welding of SS400 and SM490A using FCAW. The following conclusions were drawn. The tensile test results satisfied the KS standard tensile strength in the range of 400~510 N/mm2 in all welding positions. The bending test confirmed that most of the specimens did not show surface breakage or other defects during bending and exhibited sufficient toughness, even after plastic deformation. The hardness test results were lower than the standard value of 350 Hv of KS B 0893. Similar to the hardness test, were greater than the KS reference value. The macro test revealed no internal flaws, non-metallic inclusions, bubbles or impurities on the entire cross section of the weld, and there were no concerns regarding lamination.

  • In this paper fatigue strength reduction of butt weld with penetration defect, which can be seen frequently in the steel bridge, was assessed quantitatively. S-N curves were derived and investigated through the constant amplitude fatigue test of fully or partially penetrated welded specimen made of SWS490 steel. The fracture mechanical method was applied in order to calculate the remaining fatigue life of the partially penetrated butt welds. The fatigue limit of the fully penetrated butt welds was higher than that of category A in AASHTO's fatigue design curves, and the slope of S-N curves with 5.57 was stiffer than that of other result for welded part generally accepted as 3. The fatigue strength of the partially Penetrated butt weld was strongly influenced by the size of lack of penetration, D. It decreased drastically with increasing D from 3.9 to 14.7mm. Fracture behaviour of the partially penetrated butt weld is able to be explained obviously from the beach mark test that a semi-elliptical surface crack with small a/c ratio initiates at a internal weld root and propagates through the weld metal. To estimate the fatigue life of the partially penetrated butt weld with fracture mechanics, stress intensity factors K of 3-dimensional semi-elliptical crack were calculated by appling finite elements method and fracture mechanics parameters such as C and m were derived through the fatigue test of CT-specimen. As a result, the fatigue lives obtained by using the fracture mechanical method agreed well with the experimental results. The results were applied to Sung-Su bridge collapsed due to penetration defects in butt weld of vertical member.

  • Anodic oxidation reaction was applied to remove trihalomethanes in an aqueous solution. Each component was determined by using solid phase microextraction(SPME) fiber and GC-ECD. Anodic and cathodic compartments were separated in order to protect contaminants and connected by $KNO_3$-agar bridge. The calibration graphs of the 6 THM components were shown good linearlity from a few ppb up to a few hundreds ppb concentration level. Anodes such as platinum(Pt), titanium(Ti). zircornium(Zr), titanium metal coated with iridium(Ti-Ir), and glassy carbon coated with mixed valence ruthenium(mv Ru) were tried to remove the THMs at different potentials. The best result was obtained on the Ti-Ir anode applied 9 volts DC. The electrode could effectively remove almost all the THM components from the stirring solution within about 1.5 hours. The glassy carbon electrode coated with mixed valence ruthenium showed excellent removing effect at the begining, but the maximum removing level was remained at 60% probably due to the destruction of the electrode surface. The concentration of chloroform, however, tends to be increased due to the electrode reaction producing the component at the condition.

  • Microwave Detector Using $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x}$, Grain Boundary Junction $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-x}$ superconductor thin films were deposited on $LaAIO_{3}$ (100) single crystal substrates using a metal organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) method. These films showed the critical temperature of about 9OK and critical current density of over $10^5/A \textrm{cm}^2$at 77K. These films showed granular structure with 0.5~1.5$\mu \textrm{m}$ grains. Bridge-type junctions, 6$\mu \textrm{m}$ in width and 6pm in length, were fabricated using the photolithography and the Ar ion milling techniques. Current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of these junctions with the microwave irradiation at 77K were studied. The critical current densities decreased as the irradiated microwave power increased. When microwaves were irradiated on the bridge at 77K. the I-V charateristics showed constant voltage stcp(Shapiro steps) at $\Delta$=nho/2e.

  • Recently a new generation of crown and bridge veneering resins containing submicron glass fillers was introduced. These ultrasmall particle hybrid composite materials distinguish themselves, compared with conventional microfill crown and bridge resins, through improved mechanical properties. It is claimed that these composites are suitable for metal free crowns and even bridges using fiber reinforcement. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of thermal cycling on the tensile strength of the following veneering composites: Artglass(Heraeus Kulzer Co., Wehrheim, Germany), Estonia(Kuraray Co.. Japan), Sculpture(Jeneric Pentron Co., Wallingford, U.S.A.), and Targis(Ivoclar Co., Schaan Liechenstein). According to manufacturer's instructions, rectangular tensile test specimens measuring $1.5{\times}2.0{\times}4.5mm$ were made using a teflon mold. Whole specimens were divided into two groups. One group was dried in a desiccator at $25^{\circ}C$ for 10 days, and another group was subjected to thermal cycling($10,000{\times}$) in water($5/55^{\circ}C$). All test specimens were placed in a universal testing machine and loaded until fracture with a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. Weibull analysis and Tukey's test were used to analyze the data. The fracture surfaces of specimens were observed in SEM and the aliphatic C=C absorbance peak of Estenia and Targis resin was analyzed using Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy. Within the limitations imposed in this study, the following conclusions can be drawn: 1. Both in drying condition and thermal cycling condition, the highest tensile strength was observed in Estenia testing group(p<0.05). 2. The strength data were at to single-mode Weibull distribution, and the Weibull modulus of all veneering composite resin specimens increased after thermal cycling treatment. 3. After thermal cycling test, the highest tensile strength was observed in the Estenia group, and the lowest value was observed in the Targis group. The tensile strength values showed the significant differences between each group(p<0.05) 4. The aliphatic C=C absorbance peak of Estonia and Targis resin was decreased after light curing, and there was no distinct change after thermal cycling.

  • A feasibility study on the application of self?shielded flux cored arc welding to the on-site SM520 steel bridge box fabrication for express trains and high way construction instead of gas-shield flux cored arc welding was conducted in terms of weld soundness, mechanical properties, toughness and microstructures. All welded specimens made with the self?shielded FCAW process were tested by magnetic particle and ultrasonic techniques and they were found to be sound. All multipass weld specimens made with both self-shielded and gas-shielded FCAW processes showed yield and tensile strengths of $462{\sim}549\;MPa$ and $548{\sim}640\;MPa$, respectively. The impact values of Charpy V-Notch weld specimens also met with the required value of 40J at $-20^{\circ}C$. The hardness values of the top area of weldments were higher than those of the bottom area because of higher residual stresses in the near surface. It was found that welding characteristics of SM520 steel by the on-site welding conditions with self-shielded FCAW showed almost equivalent to those by gas-shielded FCAW in terms of sound welds, mechanical properties and microstructure.

  • Froth flotation using the residual water in the end of flotation process has been performed through controlling of pH. IEP (isoelectric point) of molybdenite and quartz in distilled water was below pH 3 and pH 2.7, respectively and the stabilized range was pH 5~10. In case of a suspension in reusing water, zeta potential of molybdenite decreased to below -10 mV or less at over pH 4 due to residual flocculants. As result of pH control, flotation efficiency in the alkaline conditions was deteriorated by flocculation, resulting from expanded polymer chain, ion bridge of the divalent metal cations ($Ca^{2+}$), and hydrophobic interactions between the nonpolar site of polymer/the hydrophobic areas of the particle surfaces. However, the weak acid conditions (pH 5.5~6) improved the efficiency of flotation as hydrogen ions neutralize polymer chains and then weakened its function. In cleans after rougher flotation, the Mo grade of 52.7% and recovery of 90.1% could be successfully obtained under the conditions of 20 g/t kerosene, 50 g/t AF65, 300 g/t $Na_2SiO_3$, pH 5.5 and 2 cleaning times. Hence, we developed a technique which can continuously supply waste water filtered from tailings into the grinding-rougher-cleaning processes.

  • Recently, foundations of heavy structures such as bridge abutments have been built on slopes or near the crest of slopes at an increasing rate. Because the bearing capacity of such foundations is considerably lower than the bearing capacity of the same soil on a level ground, deep footings such as piles and caissons are often used. However, the costs of such methods are generally very high. One of the new techniques to overcome the problem is to place reinforcing members such as geosynthetics or metal strips horizontally at some depths beneath the footings. Rational methods of analysis to predict the bearing capacity of footings in reinforced slopes are therefore needed. This paper proposes an analytical method for estimating the increase in bearing capacity gained from the included horizontal strips or ties of tensile reinforcing in the foundation soil below the footing built near the crest of a slope. A failure mechanism, including the concept of'wide slab effect', adopted in the present study for analyzing the bearing capacity of foundations in reinforced slopes, is established through the observed model test behaviors described by Binquet SE Lee and Huang et al, and the Boussinesq solutions. The analytical results are then compared with the experimental data described in the paper by Huang et al. Also in order to properly evaluate the soil reinforcement interaction, typical pullout test values of the apparent friction coefficient, which usually vary with depths owing to both the increase of the shearing volume and the increase in local stress caused by soil dilatancy, are analyzed and related functionally. Furthermore, analytical parametric studies are carried out to investigate the effect and significance of various pertinent parameters associated with design of reinforced slope foundations. • INTRODUCTION: The build-up method has been used for application of porcelain powder on the metal framework to make final tooth shape conventionally. This method takes time and need skill to mimic final shade and shape of porcelain fused to metal crown. The purpose of this study was to develop standard shape and shade laminating porcelain forms to reduce build-up time. METHODS: To make tooth form porcelain paste, several liquid organic compounds were added to conventional feldspathic porcelain. The amount of additives and rheologic property were tested to find out best composition. Comparison of mixing methods to reduced porosity, proper heating schedule, and measurement of shrinkage amount and residual organic materials were performed to set-up standard procedures. Finally, biaxial flexural strength and color of preformed laminated paste porcelain were compared with those of porcelain which fabricated by the conventional build-up method. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in physical properties and color stability between two fabrication methods after various testing methods. Conclusion: This new build-up method can be applied to fabricate the PFM crown and bridge without any loss of strength and optical properties.

  • Implant prosthodontics is beneficial for edentulous patients in enhancing the support, retention, stability, phonation and so on. Various types of prosthesis supported by implant, including implant retained- or supported- overdenture for the removable type and ceramo-metal and fixed prostheses with processed acrylic teeth for the fixed type, are frequently used. Treatment planning for the prosthesis with implant must be made after considering individual characteristics such as form of residual ridge, soft tissue, interocclusal relationship, economic status. Fixed prosthesis with processed acrylic teeth (also known as 'implant hybrid prosthesis' or 'bone anchored bridge') has the advantages of both removable and fixed prosthesis such as proper soft tissue profile, esthetic outcome, increased masticatory efficiency and psychological stability. The 73-years-old female patient came to the department of prosthodontics, Dental hospital of Yonsei University. She was diagnosed with Kennedy class I partial edentulism in the maxilla and complete edentulism in the mandible. This article reports a satisfactory clinical and esthetic outcome of full mouth rehabilitation using removable partial denture in the maxilla and implant hybrid prosthesis in the mandible.
