  • The casting method uses a mold to solidify a liquid metal to make a solid metal. Since it uses a liquid metal with the least deformation resistance, it has the characteristic that it can easily manufacture even a complex shape. However, the process of solidifying a liquid metal into a solid metal inevitably involves a volume change and contains internal defects such as shrinkage holes. Therefore, in the design of the casting plan, an excess volume called a pressurization compensates for the volume shrinkage. in the product, and it induces the shrinkage hole defects to occur in parts other than the product1). In this study, casting analysis was performed using casting analysis software (anycasting) in order to optimize the design of the tilting gravity casting method for automobile brackets. In particular, the filling and solidification analysis according to the shape and volume of the pressurized metal was conducted, and applied to the actual product to study the effect of the pressurized metal on the shrinkage defect. Through this study, it is possible to understand the effect of the pressure metal on shrinkage defects in the actual product and propose a design of the pressure metal that improves reliability and productivity.

  • The AutoForm previously used the membrane element and it accomplished sheet metal forming analysis. The membrane analysis has been widely applied to various sheet metal forming processes because of its time effectiveness. However, it's well known that the membrane analysis can not provide correct information for the processes which have considerable bending effects. In this research it tried to compare the analysis results which use the shell element which is applied newly in the AutoForm commercial software with actual experimental results. The shell element is compromise element between continuum element and membrane element. The Finite element method by using shell element is the most efficient numerical method. From this research, it is known that FEA by using shell element can predict accurately the problems happened in actual experimental auto-body panel.

  • Ultrasonic metal welding, unlike the conventional welding techniques, does not require an external heat source, welding rod, or filler metal. Therefore, ultrasonic metal welding is not only economical but also environment-friendly, and hence, it has been receiving much attention. In ultrasonic welding, heat is generated because of the plastic deformation and the friction between both surfaces of the welded materials. It is important to identify the heat-affected zone by measuring the temperature generated at the weld. In this study, the effects of the welding pressure, welding time, and vibration amplitude on the temperature distribution in the weld were evaluated by performing a transient thermal analysis of the heat generated during ultrasonic metal welding. The experimental results indicated that the temperature of the weld tends to increase with the welding time and vibration amplitude. However, an increase in the pressure does not affect the temperature of the weld largely.

Cu박판의 초음파 금속 용착 실험을 통한 용착성 평가 (Evaluation of the Weldability of Cu Sheet through the Ultrasonic Metal Welding Experiment)

  • The Ultrasonic metal welding is used in the solid-phase welding method at room temperature or low temperature state. In welding process, the high frequency vibration energy is delivered to the welding part under the constant pressure for welding. In this study, we aimed to design and manufacture a 40,000 Hz band horn through finite element analysis. By performing modal analysis and harmonic response analysis, the modal analysis result is that the horn frequency was 39,599Hz and the harmonic response result that the horn frequency was 39,533Hz. These results were similar. In order to observe the designed horn's performance, about 4,000 voltage data was obtained from a light sensor and was analyzed by FFT analysis using Origin Tool. The result RMS amplitude was approximately $8.5{\mu}m$ at 40,000Hz, and maximum amplitude was $12.3{\mu}m$. Using this manufactured horn along with an ultrasonic metal welder and tension tester, the weldability of Cu sheets was evaluated. The maximum tensile force was 66.53 N in the welding condition of 2.0 bar pressure, 60% amplitude, and 0.32 s welding time. In excessive welding conditions, it was revealed that weldability is influenced negatively.

수치해석에 의한 진공다이캐스팅에서의 용탕 유동특성 연구 (A study on Characteristics of Molten Metal Flow in Vacuum DieCasting by Numerical Analysis)

  • Molten metal flow in vacuum die casting was characterized by a numerical analysis. The VOF method was used to simulate the filling behaviors of molten metal during filling process. The various vacuum degrees of no vacuum(760 mmHg), 650, 500, 250 and 60mmHg were artificially applied in cavity. And the filling behaviors of molten metal with the applied vacuum conditions were simulated and compared with those of experiment. The results showed that molten metal was partially filled into cavity when vacuum was applied and the filling length of molten metal in cavity was increased with increasing applied reduced pressure in cavity. Also, the simulated filling behaviors of molten metal were apparently similar to those of experiment, indicating the numerical analysis developed in this study was highly effective. Through the result of fluid flow simulation, both relation equations of filling length and filling velocity with the variation of pressure conditions in cavity were calculated respectively and the internal gas contents of casting was significantly reduced by the modification of vacuum gate system.

  • Metal oxide nanostructures have been applied to various fields such as energy, catalysts and electronics. We have freely designed one and two-dimensional (1 and 2-D) metal (transition metals and lanthanides) oxide nanostructures, characterized them using various techniques including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction crystallography, thermogravimetric analysis, FT-IR, UV-visible-NIR absorption, Raman, photoluminescence, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed thermal desorption (reaction) mass spectrometry. In addition, Ag- and Au-doped metal oxides will be discussed in this talk.

  • Recently, applications of electromagnetic forces in the molten metal delivery system like LIM(linear induction motor) have been developed because it is dangerous to deliver the molten metal. Therefore it is important to get the fundamental characteristics of LIM. In this paper, we analyzed about characteristics of LIM for molten metal transportation by 2D finite element method. Then we compares the characteristics of LIM for molten metal transportation according to parameters.

Analysis of Planar Metal Plasmon Waveguides

  • Propagation modes of symmetric metal-insulator-metal SPP waveguides are analyzed. Main characteristics of these waveguides such as mode effective index, propagation length, and penetration depths are calculated at the telecom wavelength for different layer thickness. We adopt Au, Al as a metal material and air, glass as a dielectric material and obtain different optical characteristics. The surface plasmon characteristics in this paper provide a numerical insight for designing nanostructure metal plasmon waveguide.

  • Determination of weld-induced residual stress has been an important issue in nuclear power industry because several failures were reported in dissimilar metal weld parts due to primary water stress corrosion cracking. In this context, a couple of remarkable round robin analyses were conducted to quantify the welding simulation variables and to establish optimized numerical analysis process. The purpose of the present research is to introduce welding simulation results for a safety and relief nozzle, which has a dissimilar metal weld part as well as a similar metal weld part. First, finite element analyses are carried out to calculate residual stresses at the inside of nozzle considering only dissimilar metal welding. 박판금속 성형공정 해석시스템 개발 (Development of Analysis System for Sheet Metal Forming)

  • An analysis system for sheet metal forming(SAT_STAMP) has been developed to improve the design and tryout process by predicting the deformation behavior more precisely. This analysis system consists of forming analysis, springback analysis and post processor modules. The more accurate prediction of stress history can be achieved due to the improved contact algorithm. Continuous simulation of sequential processes can be carried out conveniently without interruption by the improved data management of the developed system. The error of data transfer between forming analysis and springback analysis is minimized using the proper shell element. Several benchmark test results and practical results are presented to show the effectiveness and reliability of this program.
