  • A study of the treatment of piggery wastes using a multilayered metal-activated carbon system followed by carbon bed filtration was carried out at bench scale. From the physicochemical properties obtained from samples treated with aqueous solutions containing metallic ions such as Ag$^+$, Cu$^{2+}$, Na$^{-}$, K$^+$ and Mn$^{2+}$, main inspections are subjected to isothem shape, pore distribution with micropore, SEM and EDX. Multilayered metal-activated carbons were contacted to waste water to inwestigate the simultaneous catalytic effect for the COD, BOD, T-N and T-P removal. From these removal performance was achieved. The high efficiency of the multilayered metal-activated carbon bed, satisfactory removal performance was achieved. The high efficiency of the multilayered metal-activated carbon bed was derermined by the properties of this material for trapping, catalytic effect and adsorption of organic solid particles.

  • Heavy metal (Zinc, Cadmium, Lead) adsorption onto surface modified activated carbon was performed in order to better understand the effect of sodium ion addition to activated carbon. Surface modification methods in this research included water washing, nitric acid washing, and sodium addition after nitric acid washing. These surface modifications generated oxygen functional groups with sodium ions on the surface of the activated carbon.. This caused the change of the specific surface area as well as in the ratio of the carboxyl groups. Heavy metal adsorption onto sodium-containing activated carbon was the most among the three modifications. After the adsorption of heavy metals, the carboxyl group ratio decreased and sodium ions on the surface of the activated carbon were almost non-existent after the adsorption of heavy metals onto sodium-containing activated carbon. The results from this research indicated that ion exchange with sodium ions in carboxyl groups effectively improved heavy metal adsorption rather than electrostatic adsorption and hydrogen ion exchange.

  • This study was aimed ultimately to develop an adsorption process treating heavy metal wastewater by utilizing activated carbon using flyash. The affecting factors in adsorption process on heavy metal by flyash adhesion-activated carbon are s follows. Factors such as pH, and quality of activated carbon, and reaction time made batch adsorption isotherm described adsorption capacity was made use of the investigation to evaluate adsorptive possibility of heavy metal. As the results of this study, H ion has influence on adsorption of heavy metal if pH is low. As reaction time is transformed, factors such as optimum reaction time is taken into consideration an adsorptive process of heavy metal because an adsorption and a reduction process occur. Adsorption isotherm of adhesion-activated carbon was generally obeyed to Freundlich formular than Langmuir formular and Freundlich constant, l/n were obtained in the range of 0.1~0.5.

  • Adsorption capacities of toxic heavy metal ions using as-received carbon(AC), single and double surface-modified activated carbon(OAC and DSMC) in wide pH ranges are extensively evaluated. Physical and chemical properties of surface-modified activated carbons are evaluated through BET analysis, surface acidity and oxides measurements. Based oil tile adsorption isotherms of Pb, Cd and Cr ions by AC, OAC and DSMC, the adsorption amount on DSMC was obviously higher than that on the other carbons. Breakthrough behaviors of ternary metal ions in a column packed with three kinds of carbon were also characterized with respect to the variations of the influent pH and concentration. The adsorption capacity of DSMC in a fixed bed stood a favorable comparison with that of as-received carbon.

  • The two-step surface modifications of activated carbon was carried out to improve the adsorption capacity of toxic heavy metal ions in liquid phase. Physical and chemical properties of the as-received activated carbon (AC) and two kinds of surface-modified activated carbons ($1^{st}AC$ and $2^{nd}AC$) were evaluated through the BET analysis, surface acidity, and oxides measurements. Specific surface area and pore volume did not significantly change, but surface oxide-group remarkably increased by the surface modification. Equilibrium and batch adsorptions of the various metals, such as Pb, Cd, and Cr, using AC, $1^{st}AC$, and $2^{nd}AC$ were performed at initial pH 5. The adsorption capacity and rate of $2^{nd}AC$ were higher than those of AC and $1^{st}AC$. The carboxylic/sodium carboxylate complex groups were developed from the two-step surface modification of activated carbon, which strongly affected the adsorption of metal ions.

  • A series of micro- and mesoporous activated carbons were prepared from two kinds of phenolic resin using a metal treated chemical activation methodology. $N_2$-adsorption data were used to characterize the surface properties of the produced activated carbons. Results of the surface properties and pore distribution analysis showed that phenolic resin can be successfully converted to micro- and mesoporous activated carbons with specific surface areas higher than 973 $m^2/g$. Activated carbons with porous structure were produced by controlling the amount of metal chlorides ($CuCl_2$). Pore evolvement depends on the amount of additional metal chloride and precursors used. From the SEM and EDX data, copper contents were shown to be most effected by the incremental addition of metal chloride.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the removal effect and variation of contaminated water by various water treatment processes using sediment filter, activated carbon, photocatalysis, reverse osmosis, ultra violet sterilizer and ultra filtration. The removal effect of chloride and trace metal was low by activated carbon and ultra filter but high in reverse osmosis. The removal effect of bacteria and E. coli was low by activated carbon and membrane filter system using activated carbon but high in impregnated activated carbon. The removal effect of TCE was low in sand and ultra filter system as compared with activated carbon. Ultra filtration process was effective for purify agricultural water without E.coli. Reverse osmosis was effective to remove heavy metal and activated carbon was effective to remove halogenated organic chemical compound. The flux and the removal effect of COD in spiral wound ultrafilter were higher than the hollow fiber ultrafilter.

  • Based on the previous results of the equilibrium and batch adsorptions, the removal efficiency of the two-step surface-modified activated carbon ($2^{nd}AC$) for heavy metal ions such as Pb, Cd, and Cr in fixed column was evaluated by comparing with that of the as-received activated carbon (AC) and the first surface-modified activated carbon ($1^{st}AC$). The order of metal removal efficiency was found as $2^{nd}AC$ > $1^{st}AC$ $\gg$ AC, and the efficiency of the $2^{nd}AC$ maintained over 98% from the each metal solution. Increase of the removal efficiency by the second surface modification was contributed to maintain favorable pH condition of bulk solution during adsorption process. The removal of the heavy metals on the $2^{nd}AC$ was selective with Pb being removed in preference to Cr and Cd in multicomponent solutions and slightly influenced by phenol as the organic material.
