Towards Size of Scene in Auditory Scene Analysis: A Systematic Review

  • Auditory scene analysis is defined as a listener's ability to segregate a meaningful message from meaningless background noise in a listening environment. To gain better understanding of auditory perception in terms of message integration and segregation ability among concurrent signals, we aimed to systematically review the size of auditory scenes among individuals. A total of seven electronic databases were searched from 2000 to the present with related key terms. Using our inclusion criteria, 4,507 articles were classified according to four sequential steps-identification, screening, eligibility, included. Following study selection, the quality of four included articles was evaluated using the CAMARADES checklist. In general, studies concluded that the size of auditory scene increased as the number of sound sources increased; however, when the number of sources was five or higher, the listener's auditory scene analysis reached its maximum capability. Unfortunately, the score of study quality was not determined to be very high, and the number of articles used to calculate mean effect size and statistical significance was insufficient to draw significant conclusions. We suggest that study design and materials that consider realistic listening environments should be used in further studies to deep understand the nature of auditory scene analysis within various groups.

  • From the vehicle-human interaction perspective, this study investigated the effect of experiential marketing paradigm which considers user experience as main value. We conducted an experiment to compare traditional marketing and experience marketing messages with the smart cruise control and the smart trunk in the context of driving and non-driving context. As a result of the analysis, experience marketing message had higher overall satisfaction than traditional message exposure. Usefulness, usability, and emotion were partially influenced by experience marketing message. The contribution of this study is that the experiential marketing paradigm was applied to automobile UX and practically demonstrated the value of experience design of smart automobile system.

  • This study investigated the brand personality of competitive brands in the same product category by conducting the evaluation of advertising message. The common personalities and different personalities of some brands were compared. The outdoor product was chosen for a product category. 4 different brands recently launched were selected for the study. For the analysis, every 3 TV commercials of each brand were examined by experiment respondents. As a result, all brands had two common brand personalities-passion and competence. Other representative brand personalities were ruggedness, sophistication, and sincerity.

  • It is necessary to adopt some logical techniques and methods of alarm processing for a large complex plant such as nuclear power plants in order to present the occurred alarm messages properly and concisely. Among such alarm processing techniques, the alarm suppressing function is a strong tool to avoid alarm flooding during the sudden transients of plant output power such as turbine trips, reactor trips and other incidents. Unless any suppression or representation technologies are used in an alarm message listing system, it cannot provide quick assistance to plant operators or supervisors during plant upsets because too many alarm messages are presented in an alarm list window. This paper presents the key suppression methods and analysis processes developed for implementing a suppressed alarm message listing function of an integrated alarm system called LogACTs which has been applied to a CANDU nuclear power plant. A simulation testing of the suppressing function conducted with the real plant alarm message list data has demonstrated an effective performance of the developed logics with the high suppression rate.

Analysis of the Effectiveness of Providing National Highway Detour Information via Variable Message Signs on Expressway Operations - Case of Yeongdong Expressway - (도로전광표지를 이용한 국도우회정보 제공이 고속도로 운영에 미치는 효과 분석 -영동고속도로를 중심으로-)

  • PURPOSES : Expressways experience chronic and recurring congestion, especially during weekends and holidays, because of the increased demands for leisure-related travel. The alternatives to solve chronic and recurring congestion may be three-fold: (1) physical expansion of expressway capacities, (2) road pricing, and (3) temporal and spatial distribution of traffic demands. Among these, the third alternative may be the most cost-effective method for the Korea Expressway Corporation (KEC) that can be achieved by using the existing ITS infrastructure. METHODS : KEC initiated a pilot study in which the traffic on congested expressways was managed by providing traffic condition information (i.e., travel times) of neighboring national highways for taking detours via variable message signs (VMS). This study aimed to estimate the detour rate, and the two pilot studies on Seohaean and Yeongdong expressways yielded many benefits. RESULTS : It was revealed that the total length of congestion segments decreased by 7.8 km, and the average travel speed increased by 5.3 km/h. CONCLUSIONS : Based on these findings, it was concluded that the propagation of detour information via VMSs during congestion hours can help reduce congestion on expressways and increase the benefits of the entire network.

  • Reuse of software is the process of developing software system which does not develop all modules newly but construct system by using existing software modules. Object oriented concept introduces dynamic binding and polymorphism, which increases number of executable Paths. In this case static analysis of source code is not useful to find executable path. These concepts occur new Problems in retesting. Tradition testing method can not cover complex relations such as inheritance, message Passing and instance of and can not apply on object oriented retesting. we propose the method to reduce the number of methods and classes to be retested in associated class relation.

  • In this paper, concerning the various advertising and policy advertising of the election with respect to whether to deliver a message to a large number of people, we design and implement an automative system what enables sending the text messages directly from the server to the client and also fast feedback is enabled by utilizing a number of operational programs to connect to the server. Therefore, we design and implement the automative communication system which enables delivering message to each user mobile terminal from a plurality of relay mobile terminals by utilizing the mobile instant messenger, not to deliver a message from the server to the mobile instant messenger user directly. In result of comparative analysis on the number of times of data transmission, this automative communication system utilizing mobile instant messenger shows the result that it enables transmitting five times per minute as it can copy and paste in the automation system regardless of the size of the data loading, otherwise in case of transmitting manually it show the result that the number of times of data transmission is reduced if the size of the data is larger.

A Prediction-based Energy-conserving Approximate Storage and Query Processing Schema in Object-Tracking Sensor Networks

  • Energy efficiency is one of the most critical issues in the design of wireless sensor networks. In object-tracking sensor networks, the data storage and query processing should be energy-conserving by decreasing the message complexity. In this paper, a Prediction-based Energy-conserving Approximate StoragE schema (P-EASE) is proposed, which can reduce the query error of EASE by changing its approximate area and adopting predicting model without increasing the cost. In addition, focusing on reducing the unnecessary querying messages, P-EASE enables an optimal query algorithm to taking into consideration to query the proper storage node, i.e., the nearer storage node of the centric storage node and local storage node. The theoretical analysis illuminates the correctness and efficiency of the P-EASE. Simulation experiments are conducted under semi-random walk and random waypoint mobility. Compared to EASE, P-EASE performs better at the query error, message complexity, total energy consumption and hotspot energy consumption. Results have shown that P-EASE is more energy-conserving and has higher location precision than EASE.

  • A simulation package has been developed as an event-driven system that can handle the hardware configuration of STC104 and algorithm proposed in the sister paper of ‘Study on High Speed Routers(II).’After various STC104 topology of meshes, torus, and hypercubes are constructed using up to 512 switches, the performance of each topology has been analyzed under different message generation rate in terms of throughputs, latency, and packet blocking time. Modified multicast algorithms for STC104 have been proposed for STC104 after U-mesh and U-torus in order to overcome the multicasting difficulty because of the point-to-point communication method found in STC104. The performance of the multicast algorithms have been analyzed over meshes and torus configuration. Throughput gets higher in the order of mesh, torus, and hypercube. Throughput difference among topology were distinctive in the zone of high message generation rate. Latency and blocking time increased in the order of hypercube, torus, and mesh. U-mesh and U-torus of software multicast showed similar throughput, however, U-mesh peformed slightly better result. These algorithms showed eight to ten times better results compared to individual message pass for 90 destination nodes. Multi-link environment also showed better performance than single-link environment because multi-link network used the extra links for communication.
