  • Some industrial steel structures are composed by components linked by several welding joints to constitute an assembly. The main interest of assembly simulation is to evaluate the global distortion of welded structure. The general method, thermo-elasto-plastic analysis, leads to excessive model size and computation time. In this study, a simplified method called "Local and Global approach" was developed to break down this limit and to provide a accurate solution for distortion. Local and global approach is composed of 3 steps; 1) Local simulation of each welding joint on a dedicated mesh (usually very fine due to high thermal gradients), taking into account for the non linearity of the material properties and the moving heat source. 2) Transfer to the global model of the effects of the welding joints by projection of the plastic strain tensors. 3) Elastic simulation to determine final distortions in global model. The welding deformation test for mock-up structure was performed to verify this approach. The predicted welding distortion by this approach had a good agreement with experiment results.

  • In the fabrication of offshore oil and gas facilities, the significance of dimension control is growing continuously. But, it is difficult to determine the deformation of the structure during fabrication by simple lab tests due to the large size and the complicated shape. Strain-boundary method (a kind of shrinkage method) based on the shell element was proposed to predict the welding distortion of a structure effectively. Modeling of weld geometry in shell element is still a difficult task. In this paper, a concept of imaginary temperature pair is introduced to handle the effect of geometric factors such as groove shape, plate thickness and pass number, etc. Single pass imaginary temperature pair formula is derived from the relation between the groove area and the FE mesh size. By considering the contribution of each weld layer to the whole weldment, multi-pass imaginary temperature is also derived. Since the temperature difference represents the distortion increment, cumulative distortion curve can be drawn by integrating the temperature difference. This curve will be a useful solution when engineers meet some problems occurred in the shipyard. A typical example is shown about utilization of this curve. Several verifications are conducted to examine the validity of the proposed methodology. The applicability of the model is also demonstrated by applying it to the fabrication process of the heavy ship block. It is expected that the imaginary temperature model can effectively solve the modeling problem in shell element. It is also expected that the cumulative distortion curve derived from the imaginary temperature can offer useful qualitative information about angular distortion without FE analysis.

  • Traditional section-based method develops blank along section planes and find trimming line by generating loop of end points. This method suffers from inaccurate results for regions with out-of-section motion. In this study, new fast method to find feasible trimming line is proposed. One step FEM is used to analyze the flanging and incremental development method is proposed to handle bad-shaped mesh and undercut part. Also in order to remedy mesh distortion during development, energy minimization technique is utilized. The proposed method is verified by shrink/stretch flange forming and successfully applied to the complex industrial applications such as door outer flanging process.

  • Optimization has been used in many engineering problems and must be one of the essential components during design process now. It is the process of maximizing the performance called an objective function of a system while satisfying some constraints, so finite element method is generally required in order to obtain these values during optimization. However, there are some difficulties to obtain them by means of FEM, where the changes of design variables cause the distortion and the regeneration of mesh that may result in inaccuracy and inefficiency. In order to overcome this problem, this paper proposed an alternative that the eXtended FEM introduced and developed by Ted Belytschko was applied to the optimization process because the key points of the X-FEM lie in that the discontinuity can be represented independently on the mesh by a function called in an enrichment function.

  • The finite element analysis of metal forming processes often fails because of severe mesh distortion at large deformation. As the concept of meshless methods, only nodal point data are used for modeling and solving. As the main feature of these methods, the domain of the problem is represented by a set of nodes, and a finite element mesh is unnecessary. This computational methods reduces time-consuming model generation and refinement effort. It provides a higher rate of convergence than the conventional finite element methods. The displacement shape functions are constructed by the reproducing kernel approximation that satisfies consistency conditions. In this research, A meshless method approach based on the reproducing kernel particle method (RKPM) is applied with metal forming analysis. Numerical examples are analyzed to verify the performance of meshless method for metal forming analysis.

  • Transmission of 3D shape model through Internet has become one of the hottest issues in these days. Presented in this paper is a new approach for the rapid transmission of the geometry data of the shape model. By analyzing the important three factors, the shape fidelity, the file size, and the decompression time, for the compression, we point out the potential problems of previous approaches of using the deltas between consecutive vertices and propose an alternative of directly using the position values of vertices of the model. It turns out that the proposed approach has smaller file size, has lesser distortion in the model, and the decompression is faster.

  • Severe element distortion problem is observed in finite element mesh while performing numerical simulations of high velocity steel projectiles penetration/perforation of concrete targets using finite element method (FEM). This problem of element distortion in Lagrangian formulation of FEM can be resolved by using element erosion methodology. Element erosion approach is applied in the finite element program by defining failure parameters as a condition for element elimination. In this study strain parameters for both compression and tension at failure are used as failure criteria. Since no direct method exists to determine these values, a calibration approach is used to establish suitable failure strain values while performing numerical simulations of ogive-nose steel projectile penetration/perforation into concrete target. A range of erosion parameters is suggested and adopted in concrete penetration/perforation tests to validate the suggested values. Good agreement between the numerical and field data is observed.

  • A systematic method of remeshing is required due to severe mesh distortion after some finite deformation in the finite element analysis of practical forging processes. In order to cope with the problem of mesh degeneracy during deformation, the proper design of meshes plays an improtant role in the analysis. In so-called "Modular Remeshing", the physical characteristics of metal flow and geometric characteristics are incorporated in "Module", which can be applied to the mesh design for a certain mode of deformation in so far as the topology of deforming region remains the same. For the purpose of more effective and systematic use of the modular remeshing scheme, an expert system has been developed in the framework of the proposed remeshing schemel. In oredr to show the effectiveness of the method, the rib-web type forging with axial relief or radial relief and spike forging are simulated. It has been thus shown that the proposed method of automatic remeshing by using modular remeshing and expert system can be futher extended and applied to various forging problems with complicated geometrical configurations.ical configurations.

  • In this paper, a motion-based ROI extraction algorithm from a high resolution fisheye image is proposed for multi-view monitoring systems. Lately fisheye cameras are widely used because of the wide angle-of-view and they basically provide a lens correction functionality as well as various viewing modes. However, since the distortion-free angle of conventional algorithms is quite narrow due to the severe distortion ratio, there are lots of unintentional dead areas and they require much computation time in finding undistorted coordinates. Thus, the proposed algorithm adopts an image decimation and a motion detection methods, that can extract the undistorted ROI image with a standard angle-of-view for the fast and intelligent surveillance system. In addition, a mesh-type ROI is presented to reduce the lens correction time, so that this independent ROI scheme can parallelize and maximize the processor's utilization.

  • Weft straightener is an important process to control the final quality of the fabrics. It is needed to calibrate the distorted weft after dyeing process. During various fabric treatment processes, the fabric is almost done with heat treatment through a tenter machine. At this time, weft distortion is occurred with uneven tension distribution. Traditionally, photo sensor is commonly used to detect the weft distortion but it is not applicable for special fabric types such as twill, mesh, combi, etc. In this paper, a new method for detecting the weft distortion using camera is introduced. A new weft straightener simulator is also developed to test the ability of the proposed method. It is shown that the method can be applied for various fabric types.
