  • This study suggests a computational model to inquire the roles of phonological information and orthography information in the process of visual word recognition among the courses of language information processing and the representation types of the mental lexicon. As the result of the study, the computational model showed the phonological and orthographic neighborhood effect among language phenomena which are shown in Korean word recognition, and showed proofs which implies that the mental lexicon is represented as phonological information in the process of Korean word recognition.

  • This paper proposes a automatic korean lexical acquisition system which reflects the characteristics of human language acquisition. The proposed system automatically builds two kinds of lexicon, full-form lexicon and decomposition using Korean corpus as its input. As the experimental results using Korean Sejeong corpus of which size is 10 million Eojeols, the system acquired 2,097 full-form Eojeols and 3,488 morphemes. The accumulated frequency of the acquired full-form Eojeols covers the 38.63% of the input corpus and accuracy of morpheme acquisition is 99.87%.

  • Along with the flourishign development of computational linguistics, research on the meanings of individual words has started to resume. Polyusemous words are especially brought into focus since their multiple senses have placed a real challenge to linguists and computer scientists. This paper mainly concerns the following three questions with regard to the treatments of such polysemous nouns and verbs in English and Korean. Firstly, what types of information should be represented in individual lexical entries for those polysemous words\ulcorner Secondly, how different are corresponding polysemous lexical entries in both languages\ulcorner Thirdly, what does a mental lexicon look like with regard to polysemous lexical entries\ulcorner For the first and second questions, Pustejosky's (1995) Generative Lexicon Theory (hereafter GLT) will be discussed in detail: the main focus falls on developing alternative way of representing (polysemous) lexical entries. For the third question, a brief discussion is made on mapping between concepts and their lexicalizations. Furthermore, a conceptual graph around conept 'bake' is depicted in terms of Sowa(2000)

  • This research was investigate to understand how moderate bilingual subjects represent the lexicon in second language. Although most researches have focused only on high proficient bilinguals, we analysed how moderate bilinguals who have learned English mostly in school represent the prototype of verb and its inflected form of verb. Results of lexical decision task showed that moderate bilingual subjects used different mental representation depending on whether the verb have regular or irregular conjugation. With regular verbs, the identification of an inflected form was affected by both the frequency of its prototype and that of inflected form, but with irregular verbs, it is affected only by the frequency of inflected form.

  • This study suggests a computational model to inquire the roles of phonological information and orthography information in the process of visual word recognition among the courses of language information processing, and the representation types of the mental lexicon. The model that this study is presenting here was designed as a feed forward network structure which is comprised of input layer which uses two Korean syllables as its input value, hidden layer, and output layer which express meanings. As the result of the study, the computational model showed the phonological and orthographic neighborhood effect among language phenomena which are shown in Korean word recognition, and showed proofs which implies that the mental lexicon is represented as phonological information in the process of Korean word recognition.

  • Anomia, word finding difficulty, is one of the most common feature in aphasia. Previous studies support that the process of picture naming consists of three stages, in the order of the object recognition, semantic, and phonological output stages. Anomic patients have many symptoms and it means that anomia can be sub-divided into several symptom groups. Our anomia assessment battery consists of several parts: (1) picture naming set, (2) picture-word matching task, (3) lexical decision task for mental lexicon damage, (4) naming task for phonological lexicon damage, and (5) semantic decision task. Pictures and words were selected on the basis of usage frequency, semantic category, and word length. We administered this anomia evaluation battery to many anomic aphasics and we subdivided patients into several groups. We hope that our anomia evaluation set is useful and helpful for evaluation anomic aphasics

  • The present study was conducted to explore how the processing of lexical ambiguity between homonymy and polysemy differs from each other, and whether the representation of mental lexicon was separated from each lexical ambiguity by a semantic priming paradigm. Homonymy (M1 means the literal meaning of '사과', i.e. apple and M2 means another literal meaning of '사과', i.e. apologize) was used in Experiment I, and polysemy (M2 means the literal meaning of '바람', i.e. wind and M2 means the figurative meaning of '바람', i.e. wanton) was used in Experiment 2. The results of both experiments showed that a significant semantic priming effect occurs regardless of the type of ambiguities (homonymy and polysemy) and the difference of their semantic processes. However, the semantic priming effect for polysemy was larger than that for homonymy. This result supports the hypothesis that the semantic process of homonymy is different from that of polysemy.

  • This study has experimented and materialized a computational lexical processing model which hybridizes full model and decomposition model as applying lexical acquisition, one of early stages of human lexical processes, to Korean. As the result of the study, we could simulate the lexical acquisition process of linguistic input through experiments and studying, and suggest a theoretical foundation for the order of acquitting certain grammatical categories. Also, the model of this study has shown proofs with which we can infer the type of the mental lexicon of the human cerebrum through fu1l-list dictionary and decomposition dictionary which were automatically produced in the study.
