Objectives : The deficit of recognition memory has been found as one of the common neurocognitive impairments in patients with schizophrenia. In addition, they were reported to fail to enhance the memory about emotional stimuli. Previous studies have shown that bilateral eye movements enhance the memory retrieval. Therefore, this study was conducted in order to investigate the memory enhancement of bilaterally alternating eye movements in schizophrenic patients. Methods : Twenty one patients with schizophrenia participated in this study. The participants learned faces (angry or neutral faces), and then performed a recognition memory task in relation to the faces after bilateral eye movements and central fixation. Recognition accuracy, response bias, and mean response time to hits were compared and analysed. Two-way repeated measure analysis of variance was performed for statistical analysis. Results : There was a significant effect of bilateral eye movements condition in mean response time(F=5.812, p<0.05) and response bias(F=10.366, p<0.01). Statistically significant interaction effects were not observed between eye movement condition and face emotion type. Conclusions : Irrespective of the emotional difference of facial stimuli, recognition memory processing was more enhanced after bilateral eye movements in patients with schizophrenia. Further study will be needed to investigate the underlying neural mechanism of bilateral eye movements-induced memory enhancement in patients with schizophrenia.
Objectives : This research was performed to investigate the effects of Hwangryunhaedok-tang decoction and Hwangryunhaedok-tang Pharmacopuncture at BL10 on cognition and memory impairment in a mouse dementia model induced by scopolamine. Methods : Fifty ICR mice were divided into 6 groups : Normal group (n=5), Control group (n=9), Positive control group for pharmacopuncture group (n=9, Donepezil 0.75 mg/kg), Positive control group for oral administration group (n=9, Donepezil 5 mg/kg), Pharmacopuncture group (n=9, Hwangryunhaedok-tang Pharmacopuncture undiluted solution 10 ml/kg), and Oral administration group (n=9, Hwangryunhaedok-tang 200 mg/kg). For a mouse dementia model, 1 mg/kg scopolamine was intraperitoneally administered to ICR mice. Hwangryunhaedok-tang pharmacopuncture was administered on BL10 for 4 weeks at intervals of 2 days. Hwangryunhaedok-tang decoction was given orally for 4 weeks every day. Morris water maze and passive avoidance test were conducted followed by measurement of acetylcholine concentration, acetylcholinesterase activity, and the amount of BDNF and p-CREB in the brain. Results : 1. In the Morris water maze test, the time spent staying around the platform significantly increased in the pharmacopuncture group and oral administration group than in the control group. 2. In the passive avoidance test, the time spent in the bright room significantly increased in the pharmacopuncture group and oral administration group than in the control group. 3. The level of acetylcholine in brains increased in the pharmacopuncture group and oral administration group than in the control group. Also, the activity of acetylcholinesterase decreased in the pharmacopuncture group and oral administration group than in the control group. 4. The expression of BDNF and p-CREB decreased in the control group, but increased in the pharmacopuncture group and oral administration group. Conclusions : These results suggest that Hwangryunhaedok-tang decoction and Hwangryunhaedok-tang pharmacopuncture at BL10 may have cognition and memory-enhancing effect in scopolamine-induced dementia in ICR mice via controlling the content of acetylcholine and the activity of acetylcholinesterase, and activating BDNF and p-CREB.
In general. social cognition for a disabled person seemed that he was limited aspects of emotion and psychology. Thus he was rejected. avoided. worthless and not accepted. People who have been raised in an ethnic collectivity often acquire from that experience not only basic conceps and attitudes toward health and illness but also fundamental styles of interpersonal behavior and concerns about the world. The effects of this enculuration carryover into health- care situation and also become an important influence on personal activities devoted to health maintenance and disease prevention. Our Korean culture is a state of tradition Confucianism. respects his honor and external feature. Therefore recognition of a disabled person is more specipic. This study uses Walker and Avant's process of concept analysis. The concep of recognition of disabilty can be defined as follows : Recognition of disability is a person's conscious process of sensation. perception. memory and thought and is constructed from value. attitude. emotion and expierince which is dynamics. and in everyday life is feeling that basic activity is not free and occurs interaction of envionment. Attributes of disability recognition are defined as 1) It is feeling that basic activity of his daily life is not free in everyday life. 2) It is a person's conscious process of sensation. perception. memory and thought. 3) It occurs interaction of enviornment. 4) It is constructed from value. attitude. emotion and experience. 5) it is dynamics ( changing but not stasis). Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in sleep, fatigue, and neurocognitive function between shift nurses and non-shift nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study design was used. A total of 100 nurses participated in the study. 50 were shift nurses and the remaining 50 were non-shift nurses. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Fatigue Severity Scale, and a computerized neurocognitive function test (CNS Vital Signs-VS4) were administered to the subjects to assess verbal and visual memory, processing speed, reaction time, and simple attention. After the last night shift, the shift nurse conducted the study at around 8:00 am and the non-shift nurse participated after work. Results: Compared to non-shift nurses, shift nurses had a significantly lower sleep quality (p=.002) and higher fatigue (p=.001) and achieved significantly lower scores on verbal memory (p=.001), processing speed (p=.003), and reaction time (p=.018). There were significant correlations between sleep quality and processing speed (p=.042), and reaction time (p=.015) of shift nurses who were bad sleepers. Conclusion: This study findings suggest shift work could interfere with cognitive function. Personal and organizational programs should be developed to support their sleep and neurocognitive function.
Polygala Tenuifolia, also described as Yuan Zhi, is a conventional botanic plant found in Korea and China. It's most well- known promise is to improve cognition and guard against mental disorders, cure sputum, anxiety, and sleeplessness, and keep the central nervous system health. The pharmacological aspects of Polygala Tenuifolia's genesis and component compounds reveal the neuroprotective potential in connection to Alzheimer's disease. It contains three herbs: Bokshin, Sukchangpo, and Wongi. P. Tenuifolia's primary ingredients are Xanthone glycosides, Triterpenoid saponins, and Oligosaccharides. Polygalasaponins and Etrahydrocolumbamine are the major components, and they've been widely used for more than a century to relieve mood and psychological illnesses, particularly in North Asian countries such as Korea, China, Japan, and Taiwan. P. Tenuifolia extract eliminates allergic illnesses such as eczema and contact dermatitis by modulating Protein kinase-A and Mitogen-protein kinase-38. In vitro and in vivo studies linking P. tenuifolia root ingredients to a variety of pharmacological effects pertinent to AD show that this species' isolates may function through polyvalency. In great health, people can take up to 250-300 mg per day. It was given in peer-reviewed studies at dosages of 100-150 mg many times each day. There is minimal evidence that it improves verbal memory in experimental animals.

Compared to other organs, the brain has limited antioxidant defenses. In particular, the hippocampus is the central region for learning and memory and is highly susceptible to oxidative stress. Glial cells are the most abundant cells in the brain, and sustained glial cell activation is critical to the neuroinflammation that aggravates neuropathology and neurotoxicity. Therefore, regulating glial cell activation is a promising neurotherapeutic treatment. Quinic acid (QA) and its derivatives possess anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Although previous studies have evidenced QA's benefit on the brain, in vivo and in vitro analyses of its anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in glial cells have yet to be established. This study investigated QA's rescue effect in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced behavior impairment. Orally administering QA restored social impairment and LPS-induced spatial and fear memory. In addition, QA inhibited proinflammatory mediator, oxidative stress marker, and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activation in the LPS-injected hippocampus. QA inhibited nitrite release and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) phosphorylation in LPS-stimulated astrocytes. Collectively, QA restored impaired neuroinflammation-induced behavior by regulating proinflammatory mediator and ERK activation in astrocytes, demonstrating its potential as a therapeutic agent for neuroinflammation-induced brain disease treatments.

Purpose: Aging process comes with cognitive impairment due to decreased neuronal cell number, activity, and neuronal circuit. Alteration of inhibitory neurons contributes to cognitive impairment in normal aging and is responsible for disrupting the excitation/inhibition balance by reducing the synthesis of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Morus nigra (Mulberry) is a natural physiologically active substance that has been proven to have anti-oxidant, anti-diabetic, and anti-inflammatory effects through many studies. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of the mulberry extract (ME) on cognitive function through anti-oxidant enzyme and GABAergic neuronal activity in aged rat brain. Methods: Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned as the young group (8 weeks, n= 8), aging group (67 weeks, n= 8), and aging+ mulberry extract group (67 weeks, n= 8). The aging+ mulberry extract group was orally administered 500 mg/kg/d mulberry extract for 6 weeks. Results: The aging+ mulberry extract group improved spatial and short-term memory. The antioxidant potential of ME increased the expression of superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD-1) and decreased inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Also, the aging+ mulberry extract group significantly increased the expression of GABAergic interneuron in hippocampus cornu ammonis1 (CA1) compared to the aging group. Conclusion: The number of GABAergic inhibitory interneurons was deceased and memory functions in the aging process, but those symptoms were improved and restored by mulberry extract administration.

Patients with schizophrenia have thinking disorders such as delusion or hallucination, because they have a deficit in the ability which to systematize and integrate information. Therefore, they cannot integrate or systemize visual, auditory and tactile stimuli. In this study we suggest a virtual reality system for the assessment of cognitive ability of schizophrenia patients, based on the brain multimodal integration model. The virtual reality system provides multimodal stimuli, such as visual and auditory stimuli, to the patient, and can evaluate the patient's multimodal integration and working memory integration abilities by making the patient interpret and react to multimodal stimuli, which must be remembered for a given period of time. The clinical study showed that the virtual reality program developed is comparable to those of the WCST and the SPM.
Aging in females is associated with a reduced metabolic function, increased incidence of neurodegenerative diseases, and cognitive dysfunction, as a result of loss in gonadal function. The change can alter the states of phosphorylation on the proteins, which cause dramatic changes in the cellular location or activity of the proteins. In this study, the differential phosphorylation of the proteins responsible for the functions related to cognition was studied using the ovariectomized adult rats. Phosphoproteomic analysis using the cerebral and hippocampal tissues could identify 51 differentially phosphorylated proteins including 12 proteins for energy metabolism, 8 cytoskeletal proteins, 6 signaling proteins, and other functional proteins in the ovariectomized rats. Further, anti-oxidative enzymes, superoxide dismutase and peroxiredoxin-2, which are known to be inactivated by phosphorylation, were found to be differentially phosphorylated in the cerebellum and hippocampus of the ovariectomized rats, respectively. Many of the deactivated proteins by differential phosphorylation identified in this study were overlapped to those of Alzheimer's disease cases. These results will provide information for neurodegenerative learning and memory impairments in women as brought about by menopause.
