  • In the present paper, the hydrodynamic properties of a Rahmen-type, flexible, porous breakwater interacting with obliquely or normal- incident small amplitude waves are numerically investigated. This system is composed of dual vertical porous membranes, hinged at the side edges of a submerged horizontal membrane. The dual vertical membranes are extended downward and hinged at seabed. The effects of permeability, Rahmen-type membrane breakwater geometry, pre-tensions on membranes, relative dimensionless wave number, and incident wave headings are thoroughly examined.

  • Adhesive membranes in the oocvtes of four loach fishes of Korea were investigated by light and electron microscopes to clarify the structural characteristics among the species. In the vitellosenic stage the adhesive membranes of oocvtes could be classified into two forms as follows: 1) fence-shaped form of Nemacheilus yoni and 2) non-adhesive membranous form of Misgurnus anguillicoudotus, M. Mizolepis, and Lefuo costuto. The adhesive membranes of oocvtes in the loach fishes showed a species specificity with reference to their habitats and spawning properties.

  • Most of thin film composite reverse osmosis membranes include amide linkages, which are susceptible to chlorine attack resulting in N-chloro derivatives. This study examined a new method based on post-treatment of reverse osmosis membrane with various silane derivatives to improve chlorine resistance. The silane derivatives contain one alkyl group and three alkoxy groups such as trifluoromethyltrimethoxysilane, 3-aminopropylmethoxydiethoxysilane and 3, 3, 3-trifluoropropyltrimethoxysilane. Compared to commercial membranes, silane derivatives coated membranes showed significantly enhanced chlorine durability.

  • Bipolar membranes have gained increasing interest as a tool for an efficient production of acids and bases from the corresponding salts. A large number of potential applications have been identified in the chemical and biochemical industry have been identified and evaluated on a laboratory scale. In spite of extensive research efforts and laboratory and pilot plat test, there are hardly any large-scale commercial plants. In this paper the basic concept of the electrodialytic water dissociation with bipolar membranes are briefly reviewed. The limitations of today\`s bipolar membranes are indicated. Selected examples of successful applications of the bipolar membrane technology are discussed.
