Ethyl formate has been used for the control of insect pests by fumigation. However, there were not many reports to show its target site of fumigant toxicity on insect pests since its first use in the agricultural industry. In the present study, we showed the presumable target sites of ethyl formate fumigation in insect pests using Myzus persicae nymphs. After ethyl formate fumigation, the nymphs of this species were collected and the changes at the biochemical and molecular level were determined. The activity of cytochrome c oxidase (COX) was approximately two-fold higher after ethyl formate fumigation. In addition, the expression levels of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) decreased gradually with increasing ethyl formate concentration. These two findings suggested that COX and AChE might be the major target sites of ethyl formate fumigation. In addition to these results, the analysis of lipid content using MALDI-TOF MS/MS identified 9 phospholipids differently generated 2-fold higher in the ethyl formate-treated nymphs than that in the control nymphs, thereby leading to changes in cell membrane composition in M. persicae nymphs. Therefore, the ethyl formate fumigation caused lethal effects on M. persicae nymphs by changing COX activity, AChE gene expression, and phospholipid production.

Purpose : Minimal Change Disease(MCD) is the most common primary nephrotic syndrome in children. Some suggested that tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ ($TNF-{\alpha}$) are involved in the pathogenesis of MCD. This study was done to see the changes of plasma and urinary $TNF-{\alpha}$, and their effects on the permeability of glomerular basement membrane. Methods : Study patients consisted of 19 biopsy-proven MCD children aged 2-15 years old. Both plasma and urinary $TNF-{\alpha}$ were measured. Employing the Millicell system, $TNF-{\alpha}$ were screened for the permeability factors. Results : Urinary $TNF-{\alpha}$ during relapse was significantly increased(P<0.01). No significant change was seen in the plasma $TNF-{\alpha}$ during relapse when compared to those in remission and the healthy controls. Furthermore, in the in vitro Millicell system, $TNF-{\alpha}$ did not produce a significant change in albumin permeability. Conclusion : Therefore, it seems that $TNF-{\alpha}$ may not play a disease-specific role in the pathogenesis of MCD.

Backgrounds: Endotoxin, which found in the outer membrane of the gram-negative bacteria cell wall, makes up almost all of the lipopolysaccharide(LPS). When people are exposed to endotoxin,it can result in diverse health effects such as an airway irritation and inflammation, fever, malaise, bronchitis, allergic asthma, toxic pneumonitis, hypersensitivity lung disease. Cases among the elderly, children or pregnant can occur more frequently than a healthy adult if they are repeatedly exposed to the existing endotoxin. Therefore, we investigated and assessed the environmental characteristics associated with the airborne endotoxin concentration level in six hospital lobbies. Method: Endotoxin from indoor air in six hospital lobbies was measured by an area sampling method and analyzed according to American Society for Testing and Materials International(ASTM international) E2144-01. Total suspended particulate(TSP), carbon dioxide($CO_2$), temperature and humidity were also measured by using direct reading measurements or airborne sampling equipment at the same time. Environmental characteristics were appropriately divided into two or three groups for a statistics analysis. One-way analysis variable(one-way ANOVA) was used to examine a difference of the endotoxin concentration, depending on the environmental characteristics. In addition, only variables with p-value(p<0.25) were eventually designed to the best model by using multiple regression analysis. Results: The correlation analysis result indicated that TSP(p=0.003) and $CO_2$(p<0.0001) levels were significantly associated with endotoxin concentration levels. In contrast, temperature(p<0.068) and humidity(p<0.365) were not associated with endotoxin concentration. Levels of endotoxin concentration were statistically different among the environmental characteristics of Service time(p=0.01), Establishment of hospital(p<0.001), Scale of hospital(p=0.01), Day average people using hospital(p=0.03), Cleaning time of lobby(p=0.05), Season(p<0.001), and Cleaning of ventilation system(p<0.001) according to ANOVA. Finally, the best model(Adjusted R-square=72%) that we designed through a multiple regression test included environmental characteristics related to Service time, Area of lobby, Season, Cleaning of ventilation system, and Temperature. Conclusions: According to this study, our result showed a normal level of endotoxin concentration in the hospital lobbies and found environmental management methods to reduce the level of endotoxin concentration to a minimum. Consequently, this study recognized to be requirement for the management of ventilation systems and an indoor temperature in order to reduce the level of endotoxin concentration in the hospital lobbies.
To study the feasibility of transmucosal delivery of $[D-ala^2]-methionine$ enkephalinamide (YAGFM), its enzymatic degradation and stabilization in various rabbit mucosal extracts were investigated by HPLC method. The degradation of YAGFM was observed to follow the first-order kinetics and the half-lives of YAGFM in the nasal, rectal and vaginal mucosal extracts were found to be 25.7, 3.0 and 7.8 hr, respectively. However, there was no significant difference in degradation rates of YAGFM between the mucosal and serosal extracts obtained from the same mucosal membrane. This finding suggests that even a synthetic enkephalin analog, which is designed to be resistent to aminopeptidases, needs to be fully protected from the enzymatic degradation in mucosal sites for the delivery of the analog through mucosal routes. To inhibit the degradation of YAGFM in various mucosal extracts, effects of enzyme inhibitors such as bestatin (BS), amastatin (AM), thiorphan (TP), thimerosal (TM) and EDTA, alone or in combination, and modified cyclodextrins were observed by assaying YAGFM staying intact during 24 hr-incubation at $37^{\circ}C$. It was found from the results that mixed inhibitors such as TM (0.5 mM)/EDTA (5 mM) or AM $(50{\mu}M)/TM$ (0.5 mM)/EDTA (5 mM) provided very useful means for the stabilization in various mucosal extracts. The latter was found to protect YAGFM from the degradation in the nasal, rectal, and vaginal mucosal extracts by 90.9, 90.4 and 91.3%, respectively, after 24 hr-incubation, suggesting almost complete inhibition of YAGFM-degrading enzymes present in the incubation mixture. However, BS $(50{\mu}M)$, AM 50 $(50{\mu}M)$ or TP$(50{\mu}M)$ alone did not reveal sufficient inhibition except TM (0.5 mM) or EDTA (5 mM). The adddition of $2-hydroxylpropyl-{\beta}-cyclodextrin$(10%) to the nasal mucosal extract, and $dimethyl-{\beta}-cyclodextrin$(10%) to the rectal and vaginal mucosal extracts reduced the first-order rate constants for the degradation of YAGFM by 5.8, 17.3 and 8.9 times, respectively, compared to those with no additive.
Polyaniline (PANI)/Polyimide (PI) membranes were prepared and the effects of PANI contents and doping on the structural properties and gas separation properties were studied. The polyamic acid (PAA) solution was prepared by the polycondensation reaction of 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolydinone (NMP) solvent. The PANI/PI blends were obtained by mixing PAA solution and PANI solution, and were doped with 1 M aqueous HCl solution for 24 h. The structural characterizations of the as-cast and doped membranes were examined by FT-IR, XRD, and TGA. The gas permeation experiments with $H_2$, $CO_2$, $O_2$, $N_2$, and $CH_4$ were carried out by variable pressure method at $30^{\circ}C$ and 5 atm. For all gases tested, the permeability coefficients of the blends decreased with increasing PANI content and the magnitude of permeability was in the order of $H_2$ > $CO_2$ > $O_2$ > $N_2$ > $CH_4$. The permeability for PANI/PI membranes decreased after the doping process while the permselectivity increased. For $H_2/CH_4$ separation, the doped PANI/PI (75/25) membrane has a permselectivity of 991.

Trafficking of viral glycoproteins to the cell surface results in syncytium formation in baby hamster kidney (BHK) cells infected with Newcastle disease virus (NDV). An extract from the medicinal Areca catechu L plant inhibited not only syncytium formation, but also trafficking of the hemagglutinin-neuramidase (HN) glycoprotein to the cell-surface. The viral glycoprotein was processed within the endoplasmic reticulum during transit to the cell membrane. Fungal extracts showed inhibitory activities ($IC_{50}10{\mu}g/mL$) against ${\alpha}$-glucosidase. These results suggested that A. catechu L. extracts inhibited the cell-surface expression of NDV-HN glycoprotein without significantly affecting HN glycoprotein synthesis in NDV-infected BHK cells.

The microinjection of retroviral vectors into the perivitelline spaces of MII-stage oocytes increased production of transgenic bovine embryos. However, oocytes have various sizes of perivitelline space, and there is the tendency that the oocyte membranes are damageable by micropipettes during the injection of retroviral vectors into perivitelline spaces or oocytes. Thus, it was not always possible to stably inject retroviral vector into perivitelline spaces of oocytes. Here we used sucrose to minimize the damage of the oocyte membrane. When the oocytes were suspended in 0.5% sucrose, poor quality oocytes showed rough cytoplasmic membranes, while good quality oocytes maintained smooth membranes. However, when the tatters were subjected to in vitro fertilization, no significant differences were observed in cleavage rates (82% of control Vs. 84% of sucrose treated oocytes). The Same trends were obtained from the oocytes fertilized after microinjection of LN$\beta$-EGFP and LNC-hGH genes into the perivitelline spares. The rates of cleavage and blastocyst from microinjection of LN$\beta$-EGFP genes were 81 and 25%, and from microinjection of LNC-hGM genes were 53 and 30%, respectively. The result indicated that microinjected oocytes could develop to the blastocyst stages after in vitro fertilization with no significant difference from control group. Moreover, the integration of hGH-gene (by PCR analysis) was detected in 52% of infected cleaved embryos and the expression of EGFP-gene (under a fluoresrence microscope) was also observed in 34% of infected blastocyst. These results indicated that 0.5% sucrose treatment could be an efficient method not only to select good quality embryos but also to inject retroviral vectors into perivitelline spares without any harm and hence improving developmental rates.

In this study, in order to confirm the ameliorative effects of onion (Allium cepa L.) flesh and peel on amyloidbeta (Aβ)-induced cognitive dysfunction, we evaluated their in vitro neuroprotection and in vivo cognitive functions. As the result of in vitro neuroprotection, the protective effect of the ethyl acetate fraction of onion flesh (EOF) on Aβ-induced cytotoxicity was similar to that of the ethyl acetate fraction of onion peel (EOP). In the behavioral tests, the EOF and EOP effectively improved the Aβ-induced learning and memory impairments. For this reason, it could be concluded that the EOF and EOP improved the antioxidant activities (superoxide dismutase, oxidized glutathione/total glutathione, and malondialdehyde) in brain tissue. In addition, the EOF and EOP effectively activated mitochondrial functions by protecting the mitochondrial membrane potential, ATP, mitochondria-mediated protein (BAX and cytochrome c), and caspase 3/7 activities. The EOF and EOP also improved the cholinergic system (acetylcholinesterase and acetylcholine). Therefore, we suggest that onion could be used for management of Aβ-induced cognitive dysfunction.

This study developed a rapid egg-salting method using a temperature change in NaCl solution under pressure. The permeation effects(PEs) of NaCl into eggs at ambient pressure were analyzed 1) after soaking them in 20, 30, or 40%(w/v) NaCl solution at $50^{\circ}C$ and 2) after soaking in 20~40% concentrations(w/v) of NaCl solution at $4^{\circ}C$ immediately after soaking at $50^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr(temperature change method; TCM). Under permeation conditions(40% NaCl solution with TCM), the PE of NaCl into eggs at various pressures(4.0~7.0 MPa) was determined. The PE improved with increasing NaCl concentration and pressure. In 40%(w/v) NaCl solution, the PE was more rapid with TCM(0.70% for 2 hr) than without TCM(0.60% for 2 hr). At 7.0 MPa pressure, the PE was more rapid with TCM(1.66% for 15 min) than without TCM(1.40% for 15 min). These results suggest that the TCM-induced contraction of the egg membrane improved the PE. Therefore, we believe that the development of a rapid salting method for seasoning eggs is possible with the TCM.

This paper deals with a waterproof and mechanical feature of concrete using an inorganic self waterproof agent. The waterproof agents having been used in our country were a membrane agent, penetration agent and an organic waterproof agent. However, these agents have a lot of problems such as losing the effect of waterproof in the environment of lots of water, the difficulty of dispersion. For the clear of problems of these water -proof agents, we used the inorganic waterproof agent. This agent was made from inorganic fluosilicate. Generally, a waterproof agent has been used only for the waterproof effect. In this paper, however through the some tests of concrete using the inorganic self waterproof agent, we recognized that the concrete using the agent is more excellent in some peculiar properties than general concrete's properties. In this paper, we performed compressive strength, permeability, pore volume test, etc. As a result, the concrete of using the agent is more excellent in economy, waterproof, compressive strength.
