  • The reduction behavior of silver ions to silver nanoparticles is an important research topic in polymer/silver salt complex membranes for facilitated olefin transport, because it has a significant effect on the long-term stability of membrane performance. In this study, the effects of solvent on the formation of silver nanoparticles and long-term membrane performance in polymer/silver salt complex membrane were investigated. This effect was assessed for the complexes of poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) $(PVP)/AgBF_{4}$ with the use of ionic liquid (IL), acetonitrile (ACN) and water as a solvent. Membrane performance test shows that long-term stability is strongly dependent on the kind of solvent and arranged: IL > ACN >> water.

  • A study on the fouling control by periodical ozone-scrubbing was conducted in a membrane filtration process for drinking water treatment. Hydrophilic hollow fiber polyethylene membrane with pore size of $0.1{\mu}m$ and its surface area of $0.42m^2$ was used. Dead-End filtration method was selected to obtain high efficiency of energy. Laboratory prepared synthetic raw water with kaolin was used and the membranes were scrubbed by ozone once in an hour and once in two hours. When the duration of ozone scrubbing was increased from 10 seconds to 20 seconds, the rate of membrane fouling was significantly decreased. Although the frequency of ozone-scrubbing was reduced from once in an hour to once in two hours. the effect of fouling control was unchanged. However, ozone-scrubbing was not effective after a membrane was fouled and washed with detergent for reuse. Among several possible working effects of ozone, bactericidal effect was confirmed to be the primary reason of fouling control.

  • In the present paper, the hydrodynamic properties of a Rahmen type flexible porous breakwater with dual fixed pontoon system interacting with obliquely or normally incident small amplitude waves are numerically investigated. This system is composed of dual vertical porous membranes hinged at the side edges of dual fixed pontoons, and a submerged horizontal membrane that both ends are hinged at the steel frames mounted pontoons. The dual vertical membranes are extended downward and hinged at bottom steal frame fixed into seabed. The wave blocking and dissipation mechanism and its effects of permeability, Rahmen type membrane and pontoon geometry, pretensions on membranes, relative dimensionless wave number, and incident wave headings are thoroughly examined.

  • A cellulose acetate membrane containing silver nitrate was prepared by gelatinizing in water at $2^{\circ}C$ after evaporating solvent from the casting solution on a glass plate. Permeation experiments for oxygen and nitrogen were conducted in the ranges of temperature, $5-40^{\circ}C$ and pressure difference, $1-5kg/cm^2$ in order to investigate the effects of temperature and pressure difference on permeation characteristics of the membrane. When the evaporation time was increased, the permeability of oxygen decreased but the separation factor of oxygen against nitrogen increased since a more dense layer was formed on the membrane surface. When the silver nitrate was added, the permeation flux was doubled and the separation factor was improved from 3.0 to 3.3. This implies that silver nitrate acts as an oxygen carrier in the membrane.

  • Raverase osmosis or ultrafiltration systems have generally been regarded as hard to validate about WFI production. Though the Japanese and US Pharmacopoeias have allowed distillation and RO to be applied to WFI production process, only water stills, especially multiple effects have practically been employed for parenteral water production. On the other hand, the latest analysis has shown that even distillate contains such volatile organic matters as trihalomethanes and traces of heavy metals at a little higher concentration than supposed. The JP requires TOC to be monitored in WFI process based on RO or UF systems to control the concentration below 300ppb, but very few monographs or papers have so far been published about the concentrations of organic volatile matters in distillate. (See table 1-1) Therefore, this paper proposes a new applicable WFI systems based on the result of purified water analysis with some membranes used in the process. A well combined membrane system with other units could be expected to provide less amount of impurities in membrane-treated water than in distillate.

  • CHilling tolereance of plants are closely correlated with the degree of fatty acid unsaturation of membrane lipids. We studied the effects of low-temperature photoinhibition on the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II in terms of fatty acid unsaturation of thylakoid membranes lipids isolated from chilling -sensitive plants and chilling -resistant ones. To directly test the chilling tolerance of photosynthetic machinery in relation to membrane lipids, we further compared wild type tobacco plants with that of transgenic tobacco plants, in which the sensitivity to chilling had been enhanced by genetic modification of fatty acid unsaturation of chloroplast membrane lipids. The transgenic tobacco plants were found to contain reduced levels of unsaturated membrane fatty acids after being transformed with cDNA for glycerol-3-phophate acyltransferase from squash. The functional integrity of photosystem II during and recovery of photosynthesis from low-temperature photoinhibition will be discussed in connection with the degree of fatty acid unsaturation of chlorophast membranes lipids.

  • High frequency Jet ventilation (HFJV) via cricothyroid membrane puncture contols frequency of ventilation as 20-200/min and persuits adequate gas exchange. HFJV was known to have advantages such as improvement of PaO$_2$, lesser barotrauma, stable hemodynamic effects, good operative field and lesser movement of head. The purpose of this study was to clarify the advantages of HFJV in cases of microlaryngeal surgery which operating time was expected even within 30 minutes. Twenty-eight patients were divided two groups : 1)control group : general endotracheal Intubation anesthesia. 2)experimental group : HFJV via cricothyroid membrane puncture with intravenous anesthesia, frequency 40/min, I/E ratio 40%, driving pressure 40 psi. We analyzed blood pressure, arterial blood gas, score of general condition and recovery time after operation. In conclusion, HFJV via cricothyroid membrane puncture had a good score of general condition and rapid recovery of consciousness, although some accumulation of P$CO_2$and elevation of blood pressure.

  • The permeate flux declination along an ultrafilter membrane is due mainly to the concentration-polarization resistance increment and the decline in transmembrane pressure. It was found in previous works that the concentration polarization resistance could be reduced in a ring-rod tubular membrane ultrafilter using the turbulent behavior. In the present study, the performance was further improved by properly and gradually decreasing the baffled-ring distance along the cross-flow channel coupled with properly adjusting the number of baffled rings. This theoretical analysis is based on the mass and momentum balances as well as the application of the resistance-in-series model. The correlation predictions are confirmed with the experimental results for dextran T500 aqueous solution ultrafiltration.

  • The present study deals with a numerical investigation of heat and mass transfer in a Sweeping Gas Membrane Distillation (SGMD) used for desalination. The governing equations expressing the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and species with coupled boundary conditions were solved numerically. The slip boundary condition applied on the feed saline solution-hydrophobic membrane interface is taken into consideration showing its effects on profiles and process parameters. The numerical model was validated with available experimental data and was found to be in good agreement particularly when the slip condition is considered. The results of the simulations highlighted the effect of slip boundary condition on the velocity and temperature distributions as well as the process effectiveness. They showed in particular that as the slip length increases, the permeate flux of fresh water and process thermal efficiency rise.

  • Since Kyoto protocol in 1997, carbon dioxide recovery using membranes has been attended due to its potential applications to recover high purity carbon dioxide with low processing cost. Because carbon dioxide membrane should operate in chemically and thermally severe conditions and requires high permeance, an inorganic membrane is more favorable than a polymeric membrane.(omitted)
