  • This study investigated characteristics of buckling load and effective buckling length by member rigidity of dome-typed space frame which was sensitive to initial conditions. A critical point and a buckling load were computed by analyzing the eigenvalues and determinants of the tangential stiffness matrix. The hexagonal pyramid model and star dome were selected for the case study in order to examine the nodal buckling and member buckling in accordance with member rigidity. From the numerical results, an effective buckling length factor of adopted models was bigger than that of Euler buckling for the case of fixed boundary. These numerical models indicated that the influence of nodal buckling was greater than that of member buckling as member rigidity was higher. Besides, there was a tendency that the bifurcation appeared on the equilibrium path before limit point in the member buckling model.

  • In case of rectangular latticed pattern which shearing rigidity is very small, it has a concern to drop Buckling-strength considerably by external force. So, by means of system to increase buckling-strength, there is a method of construction that lattice of dome is reinforced by braced member. In a case like this, shearing rigidity of braced member increase buckling-strength of the whole of structure and can be designed economically from the viewpoint of practice. Therefore, this paper is aimed at investigating how much does rigidity of braced member united with latticed member bearing principal stress of dome increase buckling-strength of the whole of structure. the subject of study is rectangular latticed domes that are a set of 2-way lattice dome which grid is simple and number of member gathering at junction is small. Analysis method is based on FEM dealing with the geometrically nonlinear deflection problems.

  • This paper presents the solution scheme of using the continuous formulation of 1-D linear member for the dynamic analysis of structures consisting of axially loaded members. The context describes specific applications of such scheme to the verification of experimental data obtained from field test of bridges carried out by a microwave interferometer system and velocimeters. Attention is focused on analysis outlines that may be applicable to in-situ assessment for cable-stayed bridges. The derivation of the dynamic stiffness matrix of a prismatic member with distributed properties is briefly reviewed. A back calculation formula using frequencies of two arbitrary modes of vibration is next proposed to compute the tension force in cables. Derivation of the proposed formula is based on the formulation of an axially loaded flexural member. The applications of the formulation and the proposed formula are illustrated with a series of realistic examples.

  • The temporal dark image sticking phenomena are examined and compared for the two different electrode structures such as the face-to-face and coplanar sustain electrode structure. To compare the temporal dark image sticking phenomena for both structures, the differences in the infrared emission profile, luminance, and perceived luminance of the image sticking cells and the non image sticking cells were measured. It is observed that the temporal dark image sticking is mitigated for the face-to-face structure. The mitigation of the temporal dark image sticking for the face-to-face structure is due to the slight increase in the panel temperature induced by the ITO-less electrode structure.

  • Structural systems have a lot of architectural meaning concerning historical context of structural technology. Therefore, surveying constructed examples and their constructed year, the character and development of various formations of structure systems with non-rigid member were investigated. At the result, the early modem structure systems with non-rigid member were made up from the cable structures, then membrane structures have mainly used after 1970's. The early structural systems had intended to make the large scale space, after 1970's, they have been adopted into the smaller scale space structure, and cable net structure, pneumatic structure and dome typed hybrid membrane system tend to compose the larger scale spare structure.

  • Recent attempt to enhance the safety against collision reshaped the simple shell structures into the integrated complex shell structures. Moreover, due to various regulations continuously tightened for environment protection, weight reduction of automobiles becomes an increasingly important issue. Auto parts lightening is mainly accomplished by more reasonable design, adoption of lighter materials and miniaturization of the auto bodies. Focusing on the locally enhanced design approach among the above three ways, we here attempt to develop a patching optimization method, and also to determine the thicknesses of an integrated shell structure, both bringing a specified amount of stress relaxation. We first select a cross member as a patching optimization model. Based on the finite element stress calculations, we relieve the stress of cross member by patching in two ways-nonuniform thickness patching and optimized uniform thickness patching, the latter of which is more effective in a practical point of view for the preset amount of stress relaxation. Selecting a box type subframe as another finite element analysis model, we then determine the thickness of each part by axiomatic design approach for a preset amount of stress relaxation. The patching methodology and the axiomatic approach adopted in this work can be applied to the other complex shell structures such as center member and lower control arm.

  • This study performs reliability analysis of three-dimensional temporary shoring structures with three different models. The first model represents a field model which does not have diagonal bracing members. The installation of bracing members is often neglected in the field for convenience. The second model corresponds to a design model which has the bracing members with the hinge connection of horizontal and bracing members at joints. The third model is similar to the second model but the hinge connection is replaced with partial rotational stiffness. The reliability analysis results revealed that the vertical members of the three models are safe enough in terms of axial force, but the vertical and horizontal members exhibit a big difference among the three models in terms of combination stress of axial force and bi-axial bending moments. The field model showed significant increase in failure probability for the horizontal member, and thus the results demonstrate that the bracing member should be installed necessarily for the safety of the temporary shoring structures.

  • The widely used spot welded section members of vehicles are structures which absorb most of the energy in a front-end collision. In front-end collision, sufficiently absorbed in the front parts, the impact energy does not reach the passengers. Simultaneously, the frame gets less damaged. This structures have to be very stiff, but collapse progressively to absorb the kinetic energy as expected. In the view of stiffness, the double-hat shaped section member is stiffer than the hat shaped section member. In progress of collapse, the hat shaped section member is collapsing progressively, but the double-hat shaped section member does not due to stiffness. An analysis on the hat shaped section member was previously completed. This paper concerns the collapse characteristic of the double-hat shaped section member. In the program system presented in this study, an explicit finite element code, LS-DYNA3D is adopted for simulating complicate collapse behavior of double hat shaped section members with respect to spot weld pitches. And comparing with the results from the quasi-static and impact experiment, the simulation has been verified.

  • The aluminum dome has been widely used in natatorium, oil storage tank, power plant, coal, as well as other industrial buildings and structures. However, few research has focused on the structural behavior and design method of this dome. At present, most designs of aluminum alloy domes have referred to theories and methods of steel spatial structures. However, aluminum domes and steel domes have many differences, such as elasticity moduli, roof structures, and joint rigidities, which make the design and analysis method of steel spatial structures not fully suitable for aluminum alloy dome structures. In this study, a stability analysis method, which can consider structural imperfection, member initial curvature, semi-rigid joint, and skin effect, was presented and used to study the stability behavior of aluminum dome structures. In addition, some meaningful conclusions were obtained, which could be used in future designs and analyses of aluminum domes.

  • IPS and VA have evolved in various structures such as H-IPS, AS-IPS, and S-PVA gain more competitiveness. The new pixel structures inherently have more domains which cause disclination areas. The effect of disclination is no longer neglected in those structures. A new simulation tool based on FAST Q-tensor method enables one to predict the shape of disclinations and the resulting optical properties. It ensures more accurate results compared to vector-based simulation. We applied this simulation tool for the development of 26-inch wide monitor having H-IPS mode.
