  • The super convergent laminated composite beam element is newly derived for the lateral stability analysis. For this, a theoretical model of the laminated composite beams is developed based on the first-order shear deformation beam theory. The present laminated beam takes into account the transverse shear and the restrained warping induced shear deformation. The second-order coupling torque resulting from the geometric nonlinearity is rigorously derived. From the principle of minimum total potential energy, the stability equations and force-displacement relationships are derived and the explicit expressions for the displacement parameters are presented by applying the power series expansions of displacement components to simultaneous ordinary differential equations. Finally, the member stiffness matrix is determined using the force-displacement relationships. In order to show accuracy and superiority of the beam element developed by this study, the critical lateral buckling moments for bisymmetric and monosymmetric I-beams are presented and compared with other results available in the literature, the isoparametric beam elements, and shell elements from ABAQUS.

  • When the stud connection is considered as pin joint in the practical design, it is required to have high deformability. The rotational capacity as well as moment of the connection are evaluated through experimental works. Considered in the test are the reinforcement ratios of concrete member, the magnitude of axial force and connection details. It is shown that the stud connection has some quantity of moment capacity buy on the other hand it has low deformability. The strength and deformability of the connection depend on the axial force and reinforcements around the studs. The strength and ductility of the connection ate increased by using closed C-type.

  • The structural design requirements of an offshore platform subjected to wave induced forces and moments in the jacket can play a major role in the design of the offshore structures. For an economic and reliable design; good estimation of wave loadings are essential. A nonlinear response analysis of a fixed offshore platform under structural and wave loading is presented, the structure is discretized using the finite element method, wave plus current kinematics (velocity and acceleration fields) are generated using 5th order Stokes wave theory, the wave force acting on the member is calculated using Morison's equation. Hydrodynamic loading on horizontal and vertical tubular members and the dynamic response of fixed offshore structure together with the distribution of displacement, axial force and bending moment along the leg are investigated for regular and extreme conditions, where the structure should keep production capability in conditions of the 1-yr return period wave and must be able to survive the 100-yr return period storm conditions. The result of the study shows that the nonlinear response investigation is quite crucial for safe design and operation of offshore platform.

  • This research has improved composite joint system of R/C column and steel beam developed at previous study. In this system, the shear force occurred at beam is transmitted by bearing resistance of stiffness and moment is resisted by tension capacity of coupling members. As the preliminary step of stress transfer tests of this system, welding performance test of coupling member such as round bar or square bar which has a role of moment transfer has been carried out. From the test, this element has a good welding performance and enough resistance capacity compared to design force.

  • By bond mechanism between the prestressing strand and the concrete surrounding it, the effective force of prestressing must be transferred to the concrete entirely. The distance required to transfer the effective force of prestressing is called the transfer length, and the development length is the bond length required to anchor the strand as it resists external loads on the member. Transfer length was determined from the concrete strain profile at the level of the strands at transfer and development length was determined from various external loading lengths and compared with current code equation. Through the test results, bond failure is predicted based on the distress caused by cracks when they propagate within the transfer zone of prestressing strand. The current code equation was found to be conservative in comparison with the measured value.

  • In trench excavation, essential factor of earth-retaining temporary work structure should be easy taking to pieces and movement, and dead weight must be less. This paper studies about the light weight material and application as earth-retaining structure to prevent the slope failure of sand soil ground caused by the variation of groundwater level in trench excavation. That is, light weight earth-retaining structural is proposed and a simulation with FEM on application of proposed structural in sandy soil is presented. The results are summarized as follows; (1) The study proposed FRP H-shaped pannel for the light weight member, and also presented estimation method about stability. (2) Mechanical property (bending moment, shear force, axial force, displacement) were changed according to groundwater level, but these values had been within enough safety rate and allowable stress. Therefore, proposed light weight pannel with FRP is available for bracing structure in trench excavation.

  • Among mechanical friction losses in an engine, the piston assembly and cylinder components accounts for the majority of the losses. The movable bore technique has been developed and turned out to be the most reliable technique in measuring the instantaneous friction of piston assembly. The weakness of this system, however, was the presence of the protruded top of movable bore necessary for pressure balancing. Because of the protruded part the piston could not be taken out without disassembling the crankshaft. Present study was carried out with a system of removable top of the movable bore so that it was possible to make frequent piston removals. The effects from engine speed, oil viscosity, engine load and elastic contact pressure of piston rings on the frictional characteristics have been evaluated with the improved equipment. Also, frictions of each member of piston assembly were measured.

  • In the present study, external restraints imposed normal to the plate during the cooling stage were determined to be effective for reduction of the angular distortion of butt-welded or fillet-welded plate. A welding analysis model under external force during the cooling stage was idealized as a prismatic member subjected to pure bending. The external restraint was represented by vertical force on both sides of the work piece and bending stress forms in the transverse direction. The additional bending stress distribution across the plate thickness was reflected in the improved inherent strain model, and a set of inherent strain charts with different levels of bending stress were newly calculated. From an elastic linear FE analysis using the inherent strain values taken from the chart and comparing them with those from a 3D thermal elasto-plastic FE analysis, welding deformation can be calculated.

  • The dynamic earthquake analysis of plane cable-stayed bridge structures was formulated and implemented into a computer program which analyzes plane cable-stayed bridge structu- res subjected to initial cable tensions, member dead and live loads and seismic loads. Cable-stayed bridges were modelled as multi-degrees of freedom systems with lumped- mass. Various earthquake responses such as dynamic deflection, bending moment, shear force and cable tension were investigated by the dynamic analyses in the form of the time history analysis. The time history analysis was based on the mode superposition method. The study revealed that Fan-l type cable-syayed bridges is generally superior to other types for the earthquake proof even though aspects of deflection and section force of each type presents respective advantages and disadvantages. The study provided a method to design the sections of cable-stayed bridges under seismic loads with various design parameters related to structural types. The study is expected to be useful for effective design of cable-stayed bridges with conside- ration of earthquake.

  • Coupled shear wall(CSW) has been adopted as a lateral force resisting system in building frame structures. New Zealand code recommends the capacity design in designing the CSW. Capacity design based on using moment redistribution of member force may provide the economical benefit to designer. In this study, CSW's are designed by both capacity design and strength -based design. The design results and the seismic performance are compared by using nonlinear static analyses. The amount of reinforcement of shear wall and the section area of steel coupling beams by capacity design appear to be reduced by 19$\%$ and 17$\%$, respectively. Also CSW designed by capacity design shows good seismic performance at the ultimate state.
