In order to improve the production process of low cost and high purity Vanadium, this study was done to reduce $V_2O_5$ into V-Al master alloy by Aluminothermic Reduction, followed by refining of V-Al master alloy electron beam melting. As melting time was increased in electron beam melting of V, the contents of interstitial impurities and Al, Fe were decreased but the contents of Si, Mo and W were increased due to lower vapor pressure of these elements than that of matrix V. Consequently, it was profitable that melting of V was done for 180 seconds. In addition, with number of melting, the purity of V did not significantly vary, because volatile impurities in V were removed mostly during the first step of melting. As a result of V refining by electron beam melting, high purity Vanadium of 3N(99.91wt%) was acquired including interstitial impurities total contents of which were maximum 400ppm.

An improved one-dimensional modeling of snow melting was obtained by considering both the effect of heat capacity and the decreasing influence of porosity. Using the improved model, the effects of initial snow temperature, initial snow density and the heat flux on the snow melting were investigated. It is found that the drainage starting time is delayed and the drainage rate becomes smaller with lower initial snow temperature. ResuIts also show that the drainage starts at the same time when an initial snow density is over a certain value. Melting efficiency increases linearly with an increasing initial snow temperature. With increasing the initial density of the snow and the amount of heat supplied, the melting efficiency increases, then converges to a constant value.

In this study, the coating of an Al-Cr layer on the surface of a Zircaloy-4 alloy was carried out through plasma pretreatment coating and a laser surface melting process. Two different conditions for laser treatment, severe or minimal surface melting of the Zr alloy substrate, were applied to form the final coating. When there was significant surface melting of the Zr alloy, the solidification microstructure of the newly formed coating layer was mainly composed of needle-shaped $Al_3Zr$, Al(Cr) and $Al_7Cr$ phases. On the other hand, the solidification microstructure of the coating layer was mainly composed of Al(Cr) and $Al_7Cr$ phases when there was minimal surface melting of Zr base in the laser process. However, when the coating was maintained at $1100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, significant inter-diffusion occurred between the phases in the coating. As a result, the upper part of the coating layer was observed to mainly consist of $Al_3Zr$ and $Al_8Cr_5$ phases, regardless of the laser treatment conditions.

Selective laser melting(SLM) is one of the powder bed fusion(PBF) processes, which enables quicker production of nearly fully dense metal parts with a complex geometry at a moderate cost. However, the process still lacks knowledge and the experimental evaluation of possible process parameter sets is costly. Thus, this study presents a finite element analysis model of the SLM process to predict the melt pool characteristics. The physical phenomena including the phase transformation and the degree of consolidation are considered in the model with the effective method to model the volume shrinkage and the evaporated material removal. The proposed model is used to predict the melt pool dimensions and validated with the experimental results from single track scanning process of Ti-6Al-4V. The analysis result agrees with the measured data with a reasonable accuracy and the result is then used to evaluated each of the process parameter set.

This paper focuses on the unsteady close-contact melting phenomenon occurring between a phase change material kept at its melting temperature and a flat surface on which constant heat flux is imposed. Based on the same simplifications and framework of analysis as the case of constant surface temperature, an approximate analytical solution which depends only on the liquid-to-solid density ratio is successfully derived. In order to keep consistency with the known solution procedure, both the dimensionless wall heat flux and the Stefan number are properly redefined. The obtained solution proves to agree quite well with the published numerical data and to be capable of resolving the fundamental features of unsteady close-contact melting, especially in the presence of the solid-liquid density difference. The density ratio directly affects the film growth rate and the initial value of solid descending velocity, thereby controlling the duration of unsteady process. The effects of other parameters can be evaluated readily from the steady solution which is implied in the normalized result. Since the dimensionless surface temperature for the present boundary condition increases from zero to unity along the evolution path of the liquid film thickness, the unsteady process lasts longer than that for the case of isothermal heating.
A Lennard-Jones fluid layer adsorbed on a smooth solid surface was studied at coverages $\theta$ ~ 0.8 to 1.8 on an isotherm by performing intensive grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The results clearly show a picture of two-step melting process which used to be observed in recent thermodynamic measurements of argon monolayer melting on graphite. The observed melting process consist of an abrupt density change followed by a gradual transition. Snapshots of monolayer configurations indicate that the creation and dissociation of a dislocation pair are involved in the melting mechanism. Taking the effect of system size into account, it is suggested that, while the abrupt density change may be not related to the theory of Kosterlitz, Thouless, Halperin, Nelson, and Young (KTHNY), the second gradual transition is probably a KTHNY-type melting transition.
The purpose of this paper is to review the state of laser processing technology using metal powders. In recent years, a series of research and development efforts have been undertaken worldwide to develop laser processing technologies to fabricate metal-based parts. Layered manufacturing by the laser melting process is gaining ground for use in manufacturing rapid prototypes (RP), tools (RT) and functional end products. Selective laser sintering / melting (SLS/SLM) is one of the most rapidly growing rapid prototyping techniques. This is mainly due to the processes's suitability for almost any materials, including polymers, metals, ceramics and many types of composites. The interaction between the laser beam and the powder material used in the laser melting process is one of the dominant phenomena defining feasibility and quality. In the case of SLS, the powder is not fully melted during laser scanning, therefore the SLS-processed parts are not fully dense and have relatively low strength. To overcome this disadvantage, SLM and laser cladding (LC) processes have been used to enable full melting of the powder. Further studies on the laser processing technology will be continued due to the many potential applications that the technology offers.
