High strength 7xxx aluminum alloys have been applied to automotive bump back beam of the some limited model for light weight vehicle. The aluminum bump back beam is manufactured through extrusion, bending and welding. The residual stress given on these processes combines with the corrosive atmosphere on the road spreaded with corrosive chemicals to melt snow to occur the stress corrosion cracking. The composition of commercial 7xxx aluminum has Zn/Mg ratio about 3 and Cu over 2 wt% for better strength and stress corrosion cracking resistivity. But this composition isn't adequate for appling to the automotive bump back beam with high resistance to extrusion and bad weldability. In this study the composition of 7xxx aluminum alloy was modified to high Zn/Mg ratio and low Cu content for better extrusion and weldability. To estimate the resistivity against stress corrosion cracking of this aluminum alloy by slow strain rate test, the corrosion atmosphere and strain rate separate the stress corrosion cracking from conventional corrosion must be investigated. Using 0.6 Mol NaCl solution on slow strain rate test the stress corrosion cracking induced fracture was not observed. By adding 0.3% $H_2O_2$ and 0.6M $Na_2SO_4$ to 1M NaCl solution, the corrosion potential and current density of polarization curve moved to active potential and larger current density, and on the slow strain rate test the fracture energy in solution was lower than that in pre-exposure. These mean the stress corrosion cracking induced fracture can be estimated in this 1M NaCl + 0.3% $H_2O_2$ + 0.6M $Na_2SO_4$ solution. When the strain rate was below $2{\times}10^{-6}$, the stress corrosion cracking induced fracture start to be observed.
The influences of ZrB$_2$ additions to SiC on microstructural, DDM(Electrical Discharge Machining), mechanical and electrical properties were investigated. composites were prepared by adding 15, 30, 45 vol.% ZrB$_2$particles as a second phase to SiC matrix. SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites obtained by hot pressing for high temperature structural application were fully dense with the relative densities over 99%. The fracture toughness of the composites were increased with the ZrB$_2$contents. In case of composite containing 30vol.% ZrB$_2$, the flexural strength and fracture toughness showed 45% and 60% increase, respectively compared to that of monolithic SiC sample. The electrical resistivities of SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites decreased significantly with the ZrB$_2$ contents. The electrical resistivity of SiC-30vol.% ZrB$_2$ composite showed 6.50$\times$10$^{-4}$$\Omega$.cm. Cutting velocity of EDM of SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites are directly proportional to duty factor of pulse width. Surface roughness, however, are not all proportional to pulse width. Higher-flexural strength composites show a trend toward smaller crater volumes, leaving a smoother surface; the average surface roughness of the SiC-ZrB$_2$ 15 vol.% composite with the flexural strengthe of 375㎫ was 3.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, whereas the SiC-ZrB$_2$ 30.vol% composite of 457㎫ was 1.35${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In the SEM micrographs of the fracture surface of SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites, the SiC-ZrB$_2$ two phases are distinct; the white phase is the ZrB$_2$and the gray phase is the SiC matrix. In the SEM micrographs of the EDM surface, however, these phases are no longer distinct because of thicker recast layer of resolidified-melt-formation droplets present. It is shown that SiC-ZrB$_2$ composites are able to be machined without surface cracking.
A safety assessment of reactor vessel lower head integrity under in-vessel vapor explosion loads has been performed. The core melt relocation parameters were chosen within the ranges of physically realizable bounds. The premixing and explosion calculations were performed using TRACER-II code. Using the calculated explosion pressures imposed on the lower head inner wall, strain calculations were peformed using ANSYS code. Then, the calculated strain results and the established failure criteria were used in determining the failure probability of the lower head, In the explosion analyses, it is shown that the explosion impulses are not altered significantly by the uncertain parameters of triggering location and time, fuel and vapor volume fractions in uniform premixture bounding calculations. Strain analyses show that the vapor explosion-induced lower head failure is not possible under the present framework of assessment. The result of static analysis using the conservative explosion-end pressure of 50 MPa also supports the conclusion. It is recommended, however, that an assessment of fracture mechanics for preexisting cracks be also considered to obtain a more concrete conclusion.
Y-TZP/mullite composites were prepared by the infiltration of Y-TZP precursor into partially reaction-sintered mullite. The addition of Y-TZP(~7.2 wt%) increased the bend strength(207 MPa), fracture toughness(4.6MPa.m1/2) and Vickers microhardness(853kg/$\textrm{mm}^2$) of the uninfiltrated mullite sintered at 162$0^{\circ}C$ for 10h by more than 75, 70 and 105%, respectively. Residual alumina-rich glass was observed at a mullite/mullite junction, due to the mullitization reaction of silica melt with crystalline $\alpha$-Al2O3 during a final sintering. Although ZrO2 inclusions improved the final sintered density of mullite they did not effectively prevent its grain growth.
The influences of ZrB$_2$additives to the SiC and pulse width on electrical discharge machining of SiC-ZrB$_2$electroconductive ceramic composites were investigated. IIigher-flexural strength materials show a trend toward smaller crater volumes, leaving a soother surface; the average surface roughness of the SiC-ZrB$_2$15 Vol.% Composite with the flexural strength of 375㎫ was 3.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$,whereas the SiC-ZrB$_2$30 Vol.% composite of 457㎫ was 1.35${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. In the SEM micrographs of the fracture surface of SiC-ZrB$_2$composites, the SiC-ZrB$_2$two phaes are distinct; the white phase is the ZrB$_2$. In the micrograph of the EDM surface, however, these phases are no longer distinct because of thicker recast layer of resolidified-melt-formation droplets present.
The TiC-(Ni/Ti) composites were prepared by reaction bonding between TiC preforms and the melted mixture of Ni/Ti metal the atomic ratio of which were the ranges of 0.3 to 3. And their microstructures phase composi-tions and mechanical properties were investigated. During reaction bonding Ni/Ti metal mixture had a good wettability an permeability with TiC preforms and pore-free and fully dense sintered bodies were fabricated. TiC particle shape changed from spherical to angular platelet-like and grain size was grown with Ni/Ti atomic ratio increasing from 0.3 to 1. whereas grain growth of TiC particle was restrained and its shape changed gain from angular platelet-like to spherical when Ni/Ti atomic ratio was more than 2. Maximum bending strength and fracture toughness were obtained at the Ni/Ti atomic ratio being 1 their values were 582 MPa and 11.1 MPa.m1/2 respectively.
The SiC/MoSi2 composite material was prepared by infiltration with the mixture of metal Si and MoSi2 into the preform of $\alpha$-SiC and graphite under the vacuum atmosphere of 10-1 torr. The mechanical properties, phases and microstructural characteristics have been investigated by employing an universal testing machine, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. With the increase of MoSi2/Si mixing content, the quantity of the residual silicon phase was decreased and the hardness and fracture toughness of composite materials were increased. Also, as the infiltration temperature increased, a lot of fine-grained $\beta$-SiC phases, which were produced from the reaction of graphite and liquid silicon melt, were transformed to $\alpha$-SiC phases.
Dental ceramics have good aesthetics, biocompatibility, low thermal conductivity, abrasion resistance, and color stability. However poor resistance to fracture and shrinkage during firing process have been limiting factors in their use, particularly in multiunit ceramic restorations. A new method for making all-ceramic crowns that have high strength and low processing shrinkage has been developed and is referred to as the Vita In-Ceram method. This study was performed to investigate the effect of $CeO_2$ addition in borosilicate glasses on the strength of alumina-glass composites. Porous alumina compacts were prepared by slip casting and sintered at $1,100^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours. Dense composites were made by infiltration of molten glass into partially sintered alumina at $1,140^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. Specimens were polished sequentially from #800 to #2000 diamond disk. and the final surface finishing on the tensile side was received an additional polishing sequence through $1{\mu}m$ diamond paste. Biaxial flexure test was conducted by using ball-on-three-ball method at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. To examine the microstructural aspect of crack propagation in the alumina-glass composites, Vickers-produced indentation crack was made on the tensile surface at a load of 98.0 N and dwell time of 15 sec, and the radial crack patterns were examined by an optical microscope and a scanning electron microscope. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1. The porosity rates of partially sintered alumina decreased with the rising of firing temperature. 2. The maximum biaxial flexure strength of 423.5MPa in alumina-glass composites was obtained with an addition of 3 mol% $CeO_2$ in glass composition and strength values showed the aspect of decrease with the increase of $CeO_2$ content. 3 The biaxial flexure strength values of alumina-glass composites were decreased with rising the firing temperature. 4. Observation of the fracture surfaces of alumina-glass composites indicated that the enhancement of strength in alumina-glass composites was due to the frictional or geometrical inter-locking of rough fracture surfaces and ligamentary bridging by intact islands of materials left behind the fracture front.
Aluminum matrix composites reinforced by fine steel wires were fabricated by squeeze casting process. Preforms made of fine steel wires were prepared with different surface conditions, namely uncoated(TN), carbo-nitriding treated(TT), and brass coated(TA). Squeeze casting were performed under the pressure of $1500kg/cm^2$ for 3min. during solidification, and pouring temp. of the melt being $750^{\circ}C$ and the steel mold being preheated at $250^{\circ}C$. Microstructural characteristics were evaluated, particularly concerned with the effect of the surface conditions of the preforms. The results obtained from this study are like these. TN specimens show partially non-wetted regions, due to easy formation of oxides on the surface of the fine steel wires. TT specimens show no interfacial reaction between the steel wires and the aluminum alloy matrix, possibly due to the formation of carbo-nitrided zone on the surface of the steel wires. TA specimens show excellent wettabillity between the reinforced steel wires and the aluminum alloy matrix and very thin interfacial zone is formed between them. During the solution hardening treatment of TA specimens, thickness of the interfacial reaction zones were increased with the solution treating time. TA specimens show typical ductile fracture in tensile test, but TT specimens show brittle fracture possibly due to the formation of the brittle hard surface on the steel wires during carbo-nitriding treatments. TA specimens which were reinforced with 40 vol.% of the fine steel wires exhibit high tensile strength of $77.1kgf/mm^2$ and impact value of $8.1kgf-m/cm^2$.
