  • We report a case of the cerebellar infarction and pons, medulla and mid brain infarction seen in a 30-year-old female with systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE). SLE has been diagnosed at 1992, and treated with western medicine for 10 years. The patient with right hand tremor and dysarthria, as the symptoms of a cerebellar infarction, visited our hospital. During treatment, the patient constantly complained left knee pain, it turned out the bone infarction and ligament injury in the MRI scan at May, 18, 2001, that was the side effect of the long period steroid therapy. At June 1, 2001, the patient revealed quadriparesis, dysphagia and dizziness. So we took the brain MRI scan, it showed pons, medulla and mid brain infarction. As the consequence of the oriental treatments, the symptoms of SLE had the improvement and the values of BUN, Creatinine were improved. But the symptoms of the stroke were not much changed.

  • We investigated the effect of a single intravenous dose of Fumonisin $B_1(FB_1$) of rat kidney on the time sequence. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were intravenouslyin jected with FB$_1$at 1.25 mg/kg and were euthanized at 12 hrs, 1, 2, 4, and 6 days after the injection. In $FB_1$ treated rats, serum BUN and creatinine were elevated from 12 hrs. Microscopically, the initial target site was tubules of inner stripe, with mild degenerative and necrotic changes at 12 hrs, but the tubules recovered on day 4. In outer stripe, there were only a few scattered necrotic cells on day 1. These changes became more obvious over the time passed and most severe on day 4. On day 6, regeneration occurred, manifest as hypertrophic, basophilic tubular cells. The dying cells were proved to necrotic cells instead of apoptotic cells by TUNEL. Ultrastructural changes were cytoplasmic vacuole, dilated endoplasmic reticulum, swollen mitochondria, ballooned microvilli of the tubular cell in the outer stripe. These results showed that the renal tubules of outer medulla were the target to $FB_1$-induced nephrotoxicity in the rat. However, initial target was mner stnpe of medulla.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of n-3 fatty acids on renal function in male Sprague-Dawley rats of different ages 5-, 15- and 19-months old. The rats were fed a 20%(w/w) lipid diet containing 10% fish oil, compared with control animals fed a 20% lipid diet without fish oil for 4 weeks. The results were as follows: kidney weights were significantly higher in fish oil-fed rats compared to control rats. Plasma levels of total lipid, total cholesterol, and triglyceride markedly increased, with aging and LDL-cholesterol showing a significantly lower level in fish oil-fed rats than control rats. The urinary protein and glomerular filtration rate (GFR) increased with aging. GFR was higher in fish oil-fed rats. However, urinary protein was the same in the two groups. Renal medulla thromboxane B$_2$(TXB$_2$)tended to be lower in fish oil-fed 19-month-old rats. Urinary TXB$_2$and PGE$_2$were found to be higher proteinuria. Light microscopic examination showed interstitial inflammation, tubular atrophy, interstitial fibrosis and glomerular mesangium increase. Although glomerular sclerosis increased with aging, fish oil in the diet had no effect on histological changes. In conclusion, plasma lipid, urinary protein excretion and renal histological change showed a significant increase with aging. The reduction of TXB$_2$in the medulla and increase of GFR caused by fish oil indicated n-3 fatty acid could affect renal function in line with the hypolipidemic effect.

  • A five-month old female Great Dane with a history of depression and convulsion was submitted to the Pathology and Diagnosis Reference Division of National Veterinary Research and Quarantine service. The dog had ingested concentrated antifreeze and died 12 days after the sudden onset of clinical signs. Main gross lesion was limited to swollen kidneys with diffusely fine granularity on the cut surface. Principle microscopic lesions were focused on the kidneys including dilated Bowman's space, thickened glomerular basement membrane, many light yellowish crystals, and proteinaceous casts in some tubules. Some neutrophils and lymphocytes were focally infiltrated in interstitium of the cortex and medulla. Crystals were angular or quite irregular in shape and arranged in sheave or rosette form. Under polarized light, the crystals were birefringent, which is typical of calcium oxalate crystals. Crystals were more concentrated in the cortex than in the medulla. A few crystals were also observed in the small blood vessels of the brain. Based upon the history of ingestion of antifreeze and the identification of calcium oxalate crystals in the tissue sections of the kidney and brain, this case was diagnosed as ethylene glycol toxicosis in a dog.

  • The present study was aimed to study the light and electron microscopic studies of thymic Hassall's corpuscles was done in various age groups of Nandanam Chicken ranging from day-old to forty weeks. Hassall's corpuscles are special, unique structures present in thymic medulla and also in the cortex of all the age groups of Nandanam chicken (from hatch to forty weeks) in the present study. Size of the Hassall's corpuscles in the medulla is larger than the ones present in the cortical region of thymus. The Hassall's corpuscles are made up of structureless eosinophilic mass surrounded by concentrically arranged reticuloepithelial cells. Under electron microscope, the Hassall's corpuscles were composed of reticuloepithelial cells interconnected by many desmosomes. The epithelial cells had abundance of cytoplasmic fibrils and desmosomes with few mitochondria and ribosomes. The nucleus was oval or round which was slightly indented. The centre of the Hassall's corpuscles was appeared either solid or cystic. The cystic corpuscles had cell debris within the cyst lumen.

  • Sclerotial development of Grifola umbellata(Pers. : Fr.) Donk was investigated through microscopic examinations. The sclerotium of G. umbellata was bumpy and rugged, multi-branched, and dark-brown to black in color. The sclerotial development of G. umbellata was categorized into three stages such as sclerotial initial, development and maturation. Sclerotium development was initiated as the white fungal mass. The superficial part of white sclerotium changed into gray, light brown and then black as its development proceeded further. As a distinctive characteristic of this fungus, a large number of crystals were observed in the medulla layer of sclerotium during its maturation. For development of new sclerotium, G. umbellata formed a white sclerotial primordium on the matured sclerotium. Development of sclerotium in G. umbellata was intimately associated with rhizomorphs of Armillariella mellea and the developing sclerotia were often penetrated by rhizomorphs of A. mellea into medulla layer.

  • A number of experimental evidences suggest that the rnun ventrolateral medulla(RVLM) is the final common pathway in the regulation of arterial blood pressure. A Voup of neurons in the RVLM, called the cardiovascular neurons (UN), show spontaneous activity temporally synchronized with the periodic cardiac cycle. These neurons affect the sympathetic nerve discharge(SND), thus are believed to be responsible for blood pressure control. The present experiment identified 98 UVNs in 42 cats based on the temporal relationships between each neuron's activity with both the cardiac cycle and SWD. In 20 UWL changes of spontaneous firing rate(FR) during the somatosympathetic reflex(SSR) were studied Five different firing patterns were observed during the pressor and depressor responses of SSR, implying that they form an interconnected neuronal circuit interacting with one another to generate efferent signals for blood pressure regulation. In the following companion paper, the firing patterns of CVN are analyzed to develop a minimal neuronal circuit model explaining the present experimental outcome.

  • Ban formulated the concept of 'sympathetic center' and 'parasympathetic center' in the central nervous system, and Folkow et al. reported that the electric stimulation of the posterior part of hypothalamus induced the marked liberation of catecholamines from the adrenal medulla. Tatum reported that the hyperglycemic action of picrotoxin is contributed to the cathecholamines liberation from adrenal medulla by the excitation of hypothalamus via splanchnic nervous plexus. In this paper, the relationship between the convulsive action and the hyperglycemic effect of picrotoxin was investigated, with references to the influences of several drugs related with adrenergic function and two intravenous anesthetics on the picrotoxin hyperglycemia. The results obtained were summarized as follows; 1) There was no difference between the convulsive dose(1. 5mg/kg) and the subconvulsive dose (0.75mg/kg) of picrotoxin in its hyperglycemic effect that was not affected with the phenobarbital pretreatment, but the efficacy of its hyperglycemic action was more prominent than that of strychnine. 2) The hyperglycemic effect of picrotoxin was markedly suppressed by the pretreatment of thiopental or ketamine. 3) The hyperglycemic effect was not affected by the reserpine pretreatment, but the effect was markedly suppressed by the pretreatment of iproniazid or chlorpromazine. 4) The hyperglycemic effect of picrotoxin was significantly suppressed by the pretreatment of hexamethonium, propranolol or guanethidine, and the order of those suppressing efficacy was propranolol> hexamethonium> guanethidine.

  • The changes in blood pressure may relate to the alterations of the responsiveness to vasoconstrictors and vasodilators, and these alterations can arise the modifications in the properties of angiotensin II (AII) receptor. In order to examine the changes of AII receptor in the hypertensive mechanism of renin-dependent hypertensive rats (RHRs; two-kidney, one-ligated type), we compared the equilibrium binding characteristics of $[^3H]$All in adrenal cortex and medulla from RHRs and normotensive rats. The dissociation constants of AII binding in both tissues of RHRs were very similar to those in the respective tissue of normotensive rats. However, the maximum binding was increased from 805 to 1050 fmole/mg protein in the adrenal cortex of RHRs, and decreased from 172 to 126 fmole/mg protein in the adrenal medulla of RHRs. These results imply that the up- and down-regulation of the All receptor population on the cell surface of adrenal glands from RHRs are consorted with the elevation of blood pressure and the activation of renin-angiotensin system.

  • The present experiment was designed to examine catecholamines, serotonine, amino acids, malondialdehyde and free radical scavenging activity, by administering Yukmijihwangtang extract of a variety of concentraction to senile brain. The results were summarized as followings: 1. Yukmijihwangtang significantly increased noradrenaline in the striatum, hypothalamus, midbrain and pons-medulla oblongota of the brain tissue of senile rats, and even though Yukmijihwangtang increased noradrenaline also in other brain tissue, there was no significance. 2. Yukmijihwangtang significantly increased dopamine in the striatum, hypothalamus and midbrain of the brain tissue of senile rats, and even though Yukmijihwangtang increased dopamine also in other brain tissue, there was no significance. 3. Yukmijihwangtang significantly increased serotonine in the pons- medulla oblongata and cerebellum of the brain tissue of senile rats, and even though Yukmijihwangtang increased serotonine also in the other brain tissue except hypothalamus and midbrain, there was no significance. 4. Yukmijihwangtang significantly increased amino acid in the brain tissue of senile rats. 5. Yukmijihwangtang significantly decresed malondialdehyde and free radical in the brain tissue of senile rats. According to the above results, Yukmijihwangtang is assumed to improve brain function by reacting on biochemical of the senile brain, and that Yukmijihwangtang can be used to treat regressive brain disease carrying symptoms of psychoactive disorders.
