  • Ram pressure stripping by intracluster medium (ICM) can play a crucial role in galaxy evolution in the high-density environment as seen by many examples of cluster galaxies. Although much progress has been made by direct numerical simulations of galaxies (or a galaxy) as a whole in a cluster environment, the interstellar medium (ISM) in galactic disks is not well resolved to understand responses of the ISM in details. In order to overcome this, we utilize the TIGRESS simulation suite that focuses on a local region of galactic disks and resolves key physical processes in the ISM with uniformly high resolution. In this talk, we present the results from the solar neighborhood TIGRESS model facing the ICM winds with a range of ram pressures. When ram pressure is weaker than and comparable to the ISM weight, the ICM winds simply reshape the ISM to the one-sided disk, but star formation rates remain unchanged. Although there exist low-density channels in the multiphase ISM that allow the ICM winds to penetrate through, the ISM turbulence quickly closes the channels and prevents efficient stripping. When ram pressure is stronger than the ISM weight, a significant amount of the ISM can be stripped away rapidly, and star formation is quickly quenched. While the low-density gas is stripped rapidly, star formation still occurs in the extraplanar dense ISM (1-2kpc away from the stellar disk). Finally, we quantify the momentum transfer from the ICM to the ISM using the mass-and momentum-weighted velocity distribution functions of each gas phase.

  • We investigate the impact of ram pressure stripping due to the intracluster medium (ICM) on star-forming disk galaxies with a multiphase interstellar medium maintained by strong stellar feedback. We carry out radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of an isolated disk galaxy embedded in a 1011 M⦿ dark matter halo with various ICM winds mimicking the cluster outskirts (moderate) and the central environment (strong). We find that both star formation quenching and triggering occur in ram pressure-stripped galaxies, depending on the strength of the winds. HI and H2 in the outer galactic disk are significantly stripped in the presence of moderate winds, whereas turbulent pressure provides support against ram pressure in the central region, where star formation is active. Moderate ICM winds facilitate gas collapse, increasing the total star formation rates by ~40% when the wind is oriented face-on or by ~80% when it is edge-on. In contrast, strong winds rapidly blow away neutral and molecular hydrogen gas from the galaxy, suppressing star formation by a factor of 2 within ~200 Myr. Dense gas clumps with nH≳10 M⦿ pc-2 are easily identified in extraplanar regions, but no significant young stellar populations are found in such clumps. In our attempts to enhance radiative cooling by adopting a colder ICM of T=106K only a few additional stars are formed in the tail region, even if the amount of newly cooled gas increases by an order of magnitude.

  • The effect of abscisic acid (ABA) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) on bulblet formation from the culture of Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum Makino was studied. Shoot clumps were cultured on MS medium containing ABA (0, 0.01∼2.0mg/L) and MeJA (0.01∼5.0mg/L). ABA at low concentrations (0.01mg/L) induced shoot proliferation without bulblet formation. However, bulblet formation started on the medium containing MeJA approximately in 4-6 weeks of culture. Furthermore, 1.0mg/L MeJA resulted in bulblet formation at high frequency (100%) as compare to the control (46.1%). Cortical cells of the bulblets enlarged on medium with MeJA had dense protein-like substance in expanded and round cells when examined under the microscope. The data described here show that formation and enlargement of bulblets from Allium victorialis can be improved by addition of appropriate concentration of MeJA.

  • Fifty five species of medicinal plant materials were tested for their antifungal activity in vitro against Rhizoctonia solani AG 2-1 and Trichoderma harzianum to select plant species that can be used to improve the biocontrol efficacy of T. harzianum. Six species were effective against R. solani AG 2-1 but were also antagonistic to T. harzianum, except for Cinnamomum loureirii stem bark (CSB). CSB inhibited mycelial growth of R. solani AG 2-1 by 73.7% but showed an inhibitory effect on mycelial growth of T. harzianum by only 2.2%. Scanning electron microscophs showed that the CSB treatment resulted in deformed R. solani AG 2-1 hyphal cells, and transmission electron microscophs revealed degenerated cell structures such as degenerated cytoplasm and disentangled cell wall and the accumulation of electron-dense inclusions (asterisks) in the CSB treatment. The biocontrol efficacy of radish damping-off increased greatly following the combined treatments of T. harzianum and CSB and the combined treatment increased efficacy from 6.4-23.1% to 37.1-87.3% compared with either treatment alone. CSB did not affect T. harzianum population growth, as it was almost the same in rice-bran peat medium (culture) amended with 0.1% and 1.0% CSB powder as in non-amended medium. The formulation of T. harzianum in rice-bran peat medium amended with CSB powder reduced the severity of radish damping-off by 80.6%, suggesting that T. harzianum and CSB can be formulated as a biocontrol product for the control of R. solani AG 2-1.

  • We have numerically simulated the evolution of supernova remnant VRO 42.05.01(G166.0+43) in order to understand its morphology m radio and X-ray observations as well as the dynamical interaction of the supernova remnant with the surrounding interstellar medium. The Radio and ROSAT observations suggest that the unusual morphology of VRO 42.05.01 is caused by a supernova blast wave breaking out of the cloud boundary where the supernova event occurred, and expanding into another cloud across a much less dense and presumably hot cavity. Our numerical results are consistent with the interactions of a passing supernova blast wave with the clouds across the cavity. We discuss the implications of our results on the dynamics of VRO 42.05.01 such as the reverse shocks, the rejuvenation of the hot cavity, and the reflected shocks formed by the reverse shock collisions. We have theoretically mapped the radio continuum(1.4 GHz) and X-ray(0.1~2 keV) morphology which are consistent with the observational ones.

  • In recent years, one of alternatives for constructing RFID networks that provide mobile services is using wireless sensor networks (WSN) to enhance network capacity, utility and scalability. Due to absence of compatible reader anti-collision control and channel capture phenomenon, the medium access control protocols as used in the RFID networks lead to reader collision and starvation problem. In this paper, we develop a MAC protocol which is called Enhanced Collision Avoidance MAC (ECO) to avoid reader to reader collisions in an integrated RFID network. ECO is a CSMA-based MAC protocol, and operates on integrated nodes which consist of a RFID reader and a mote. Performance evaluation shows superior results to pure-CSMA protocols under dense deployment environments, both in number of failures and in throughput.

  • This study aims at finding the closest packings of regular shape particles such as sphere, circle rod and hexagonal rod type. As the ratio of particle size to container lowered to less than 1/10, the wall effect decreased gradually. The tap density of spherical particles with almost orthorhombic arrangement was 59.5%, while those of circle rod and hexagonal rod type particles were 63.5% and 63.0% respectively. And it was decreased with increasing the aspect ratio of regular particles. The tap density of binary mixtures was larger than that corresponding to the monosized particles packing by about 15%. The tap density of ternary mixtures was larger than that of corresponding to the packing of binary mixtures by about 9%. This work employed the binary mixture of 60% coarse particles and 40% fine particles with size ratio of 1.0 to 1/10 and the ternary mixture of 60% coarse particles, 20% medium and 20% fine particles with size ratio of 1:1/10:1/400 respectively.

  • Since sulfur dioxide is released from the oxidation of sulfur in fuel, the level of $SO_2$ in industrial areas can be effectively managed by optimizing the allocation of fuels: the fuel should be allocated to each industries so as to achieve the air quality goal in the area with minimum fuel cost. The solution for this can be by solved using linear programming technique incorporated with the Gaussian dispersion equation. When this method was applied in Ulsan Industrial Complex, 39.3% of fuel expense could be saved compared with the present uniform fuel policy. With this method, bituminous coal generally was allocated to big emission sources such as power plants or to industries sparsely located in remote areas, and LPG or low-sulfur oils to small or medium-size sources in dense indurstrial aras. However, the particulates emission will increase with this policy, because it maximizes the use of coal within the limit to achieve the air quality goal in the area.

  • High-temperature superconductor films of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$$O_{7-x}$ were fabricated by electrophoretic deposition (EPD) from alcohol-based suspension. Maximum stability is observed for the suspension containing iso-alcohol as the dispersion medium. However, for the formation of a dense and adherent coating of YBCO on a silver substrate by EPD, the best results were obtained in mix PrOH and BuOH suspension. The superconducting critical current density (J$_{c}$) was 1200 A/cm$^2$ for a films deposited in 30% iso-PrOH and 70 % iso-BuOH suspension.ion.
