In on-demand multimedia streaming systems, streaming techniques are usually combined with proxy caching to obtain better performance. The patch streaming technique has no start-up latency inherent to it, but requires extra bandwidth to deliver the media data in patch streams. This paper proposes a proxy caching technique which aims at reducing the bandwidth cost of the patch streaming technique. The proposed approach determines media prefixes with high patching cost and caches the appropriate media prefix at the proxy/local server. Herein the scheme is evaluated using a synthetically generated media access workload and its performance is compared with that of the popularity and prefix-aware interval caching scheme (the prefix part) and with that of patch streaming with no caching. The bandwidth saving, hit ratio and concurrent number of clients are used to compare the performance, and the proposed scheme is found to perform better for different caching capacities of the proxy server.
In this paper, we propose a proxy caching scheme that stores a portion of a continuous media object or an entire object on the Internet. The proxy stores the initial fraction of a continuous media object and determines the optimal size of the initial fraction of the continuous media object to be cached based on the object popularity. Under the proposed scheme, the initial latency of most clients and the data transferred from a remote server can be reduced and limited cache storage space can be utilized efficiently. Considering the characteristics of continuous media, we also propose the novel popularity for the continuous media objects based on the amount of the data of each object played by the clients. Finally, we have performed trace-driven simulations to evaluate our caching scheme and the popularity for the continuous media objects. Through these simulations, we have verified that our caching scheme, PPC outperforms other well-known caching schemes in terms of BHR, DSR and replacement and that popularity for the continuous media objects based on the amount of the playback data can enhance the performance of caching scheme.

In multimedia new service on the internet, there are problems such as server overload, network congestion and initial latency. To overcome these problems, we propose a proxy push-caching scheme that stores a portion of continuous media stream or entire stream, and a transmission scheme of NOD continuous media, RTP-RR and RTP-nR to exploit push-caching scheme. With the proposed push-caching scheme, NOD server pushes fixed portion of stream to a proxy when new data is generated, and the cached size of each stream changes dynamically according to the caching utility value of each stream. As a result, the initial latency of client side could be reduced and the amount of data transmitted fro ma proxy server to client could be increased. Moreover, we estimate a caching utility value of each stream using correlation between disk space occupied by the stream and the amount of data stream requested by client. And we applied the caching utility value ot replacement policies. The performance of the proxy push-caching and continuous media transmission schemes proposed were compared with other schemes using simulations. In the simulation, these schemes show better results than other schemes in terms of BHR (Byte Hit Rate), initial latency, the number of replacement and packet loss rate.
Discrimination of media object segments in wireless home proxies has a significant impact on caching delay, and caching delay degrades the performance of the proxy. In this paper, we propose a Single Fetching Smart Caching (SFSC) strategy and a Multi-Fetching Smart Caching (MFSC) strategy to improve the proxy performance of the home network and improve the caching performance for media object segments. The SFSC strategy is a technique that performs caching by sequential fetching of object segments requested by the home node one at a time, which guarantees a faster cache hit rate, and the MFSC strategy is a technique that caches the media object segments by blocking object segments requested by the home node one at a time, which improves the throughput of cache. Simulation results show that the cache hit rate and the caching delay are more efficient than the MFSC technique, and the throughput of the object segment is more efficient than that of the SFSC technique.

This paper proposes a user's mobility based cooperative proxy caching policy for effective resource management of continuous media objects in mobile environments. This policy is different from the existing proxy caching policies in terms of how to exploit users' mobility. In other words, existing caching policies work based on the information about objects by referring to user's requests within a specified domain whereas the proposed caching policy runs by utilizing a number of user's requests across several domains. So, the proposed policy is applicable to random requests in mobile environments Moreover, we also propose a replacement policy based on weights and playback time. To check the efficiency of the proposed caching policy, the proposed replacement policy is run with different size of caching unit object or segment. The result of performance analyze tells what a ratio of user's mobility is are major factors for the efficient operation of the cooperative caching.
The development of proxy caching is essential in the area of video-on-demand (VoD) to meet users' expectations. VoD requires high bandwidth and creates high traffic due to the nature of media. Many researchers have developed proxy caching models to reduce bandwidth consumption and traffic. Proxy caching keeps part of a media object to meet the viewing expectations of users without delay and provides interactive playback. If the caching is done continuously, the entire cache space will be exhausted at one stage. Hence, the proxy server must apply cache replacement policies to replace existing objects and allocate the cache space for the incoming objects. Researchers have developed many cache replacement policies by considering several parameters, such as recency, access frequency, cost of retrieval, and size of the object. In this paper, the Weighted-Rank Cache replacement Policy (WRCP) is proposed. This policy uses such parameters as access frequency, aging, and mean access gap ratio and such functions as size and cost of retrieval. The WRCP applies our previously developed proxy caching model, Hot-Point Proxy, at four levels of replacement, depending on the cache requirement. Simulation results show that the WRCP outperforms our earlier model, the Dual Cache Replacement Policy.
When users of mobile environments move fast or slow into a number of base stations(BS) and request the services of continuous media data such as video or audio, this study examines what the caching has the usefulness in mobile environments. Namely, to reduce packet disconnections and network overheads in mobile environments and minimize transmission delay time, we propose domain-based hierarchical caching structure and study whether application of caching has the usefulness. So we have a model based on user environments and hierarchical network structure to process continuous media services, and analyze the usefulness of caching which depends on the mobile patterns of user and the locations of caching nodes. And then, we research whether caching offers the usefulness in mobile environments. As the result, we are able to see that an adaptable application of caching is needed because the hit ratio and the number of replacement vary in large according to mobile patterns of user and locations of caching.
Streaming media has contributed to a significant amount of today's Internet Traffic. Like traditional web objects, rich media objects can benefit from proxy caching, but caching streaming media is more of challenging than caching simple web objects, because the streaming media have features such as huge size and high bandwidth. And to support various bandwidth requirements for the heterogeneous ubiquitous devices, a transcoding proxy is usually necessary to provide not only adapting multimedia streams to the client by transcoding, but also caching them for later use. The traditional proxy considers only a single version of the objects, whether they are to be cached or not. However the transcoding proxy has to evaluate the aggregate effect from caching multiple versions of the same object to determine an optimal set of cache objects. And recent researches about multimedia caching frequently store initial parts of videos on the proxy to reduce playback latency and archive better performance. Also lots of researches manage the contents with segments for efficient storage management. In this paper, we define the 9-events of transcoding proxy using 4-atomic events. According to these events, the transcoding proxy can define the next actions. Then, we also propose the segment-based caching policy for the transcoding proxy system. The performance results show that the proposing policy have a low delayed start time, high byte-hit ratio and less transcoding data.
During several decades, hard disk drive(HDD) has been used in most computer systems as secondary storage and, however, the performance enhancement of HDD is limited by its mechanical properties. On the other hand, although the flash memory based solid state drive (SSD) has more advantages over HDD such as high performance and low noise, SSD is still too expensive for common usage and expected to take several years to replace HDD completely. Therefore, SSD caching mechanism using the SSD as a cache of high capacity HDD has been highlighted lately. The representatives of SSD caching mechanisms are typically bcache, dm-cache, Flashcache, and EnhanceIO. Each of them has its own internal mechanism and implementation, and this makes them to show their own pros. and cons. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of each SSD caching mechanisms and compare the performance of them under various workloads. We expect that our contribution will be useful to enhance the performance of SSD caching mechanisms.
