The finite element analysis is frequently used to predict dynamic responses of complex structures. Since the predicted responses often differ from experimentally measured ones, updating of the finite element models is performed to make the finite element results agree with the measured ones. Among several model updating methods, one is to use FRF(frequency response function) data without a modal analysis. This paper investigates characteristics of the model updating method in order to improve the method. The investigation is focused on how to obtain FRFs for unmeasured rotational displacements and how to consider damping. For the investigation simulated data and experimental data for a cantilever beam are used.
The sensitivity-based finite element model updating method has received increasing attention in damage detection of structures based on measured modal parameters. Finding an optimization technique with high efficiency and fast convergence is one of the key issues for model updating-based damage detection. A new simple and computationally efficient optimization algorithm is proposed and applied to damage detection by using finite element model updating. The proposed method combines the Gauss-Newton method with region truncation of each iterative step, in which not only the constraints are introduced instead of penalty functions, but also the searching steps are restricted in a controlled region. The developed algorithm is illustrated by a numerically simulated 25-bar truss structure, and the results have been compared and verified with those obtained from the trust region method. In order to investigate the reliability of the proposed method in damage detection of structures, the influence of the uncertainties coming from measured modal parameters on the statistical characteristics of detection result is investigated by Monte-Carlo simulation, and the probability of damage detection is estimated using the probabilistic method.

The updating of the FE model to match it with the experimental results needs the modal information. There are two causes where this methodology is ill-equip to deal with; under-determined and ill-conditioning problem. In this research, the feedback exciter which uses the summation of the white noise and the signals from the measurement sensors multiplied with feedback gains is proposed. The new energy path generated by the feedback exciter changes the modal characteristics of the system and this additional modal information can solve the under-determined problem in the model updating. Through the proper selection of the exciter and sensor locations and the feedback gain, the eigenvalue sensitivity of the updating parameters which cause the ill-conditioning of the sensitivity matrix can be modified. This methodology does not require any additional equipments, makes the acquirement of the additional modal information easy and is robust to the measurement noise.

This paper proposes a learning input shaper with nonlinear actuator dynamics to reduce the residual vibration of flexible systems. The controller is composed of an estimator of the time constant of the nonlinear actuator dynamics, a recursive least squares method, and an iterative updating algorithm. The updating mechanism is modified by introducing a vibration measurement function to cope with the dynamics of nonlinear actuators. The controller is numerically evaluated with respect to parameter convergence and control performance by using a benchmark pendulum system. The feasibility and applicability of the controller are demonstrated by comparing its control performance to that of an existing controller algorithm.

It is necessary to develop an efficient analysis method to identify the dynamic characteristics of a large mechanical structure and update its finite element model. That is because these processes need the huge computation of a large structure and iterative estimation due to the use of the first- order sensitivity. To efficiently carry out these processes, a new method, called the generalized free-interface mode sensitivity method, has been proposed in the authors' preceeding paper. This method is based on substructuring approach such as a free-interface method and a generalized synthesis algorithm. In this paper, the proposed method is applied to the model updating of a car body structure to verify its accuracy and reliability for a large mechanical structure.
It is important to model the mechanical structure precisely and reasonably in predicting the dynamic characteristics, controlling the vibration, and designing the structure dynamics. In the finite element modeling, the errors can be contained from the physical parameters, the approximation of the boundary conditions, and the element modeling. From the dynamic test, more precise dynamic characteristics can be obtained. Model updating using parameter modification is appropriate when the design parameter is used to analyze the input parameter like finite element method. Finite element analysis for cantilever and simply supported beams with uniform area and shape change are carried out as model updating examples. Mass and stiffness matrices are updated by comparing test and analytical modal frequencies. The result shows that the updated frequencies become closer to the test frequencies.

It is important to make a mechanical structure precisely and reasonably in predicting the dynamic characteristics, controlling the vibration, and designing the structure dynamics. In finite element analysis model updating is appropriate as the design parameter is used to analyze the dynamic system. The errors can be contained from the physical parameters and the element modeling. From the dynamic test, more precise dynamic characteristics can be obtained. In this paper, model updating algorithm is developed using frequency difference between experiment and calculation. Modal frequencies are obtained by experiment and finite element analysis for beams with various cross section and shapes which have added masses and holes in the middle. For plates with and without groove, experiment and analyses are carried out by applying free boundary conditions as well. Mass and stiffness matrices are updated by comparing test and analytical modal frequencies. The result shows that the updated frequencies become closer to the test frequencies in case that both matrices are updated. An improved analytical model is obtained by changing model parameters such that the discrepancy between test and finite element frequencies is minimized. For beam and plate models updating of mass and stiffness matrices can improve the dynamical behavior of the model by acting on the physical parameters such as masses and stiffness.
Precise and reasonable modelling is necessary and indispensable to the analysis of dynamic characteristics of mechanical structures. Also. the effective prediction of the change of modal properties due to the variation of design parameters is required especially for the application of finite element method to the structural dynamics problems. To meet those necessity and requirement, three model updating algorithms are proposed for finite element methods. Those algorithms are based on sensitivity analysis of the modal data obtained from experimental modal analysis(EMA) and analytical modal analysis(AMA). The adapted sensitivity analysis methods of the algorithms are 1)eigensensitivity(EGNS) method. 2)frequency response function sensitivity(FRFS) method. 3)sensitivity based element-by-element method (SBEEM), Singular value decomposition(SVD) is used for performing eigenanalysis and parameter estimation in the updating process. Those algorithms are applied to finite element of a plate and the updating capability of each algorithm is compared in terms of accuracy. reliability and stability of the updating process. It is shown that the model updating method using frequency response function is superior to the other methods in view of various updating capabilities.

As the rate of increase in areal density of the HDD has accelerated, dynamic characteristics of the HDD actuator need to be improved with respect to the performance of the tracking servo and shock transmission. Therefore, it is important to analyze the vibration characteristic of the HDD actuator that consists of the VCM part, E-block and pivot bearing. In this paper, vibration modes of the HDD actuator are investigated the using finite element and experimental modal analyses methods. To develop a detailed finite element model, finite element models of each components of the actuator assembly are constructed and tuned to the results of the EMA. The VCM coil is modeled as an equivalent finite element model that has an orthotropic material property using auto-model updating program. Auto-model updating program with improved sensitivity based iterative method is applied to build a detailed finite element model using the result of the EMA. A detailed finite element model of the HDD actuator is then constructed and analyzed.
Identification of damping characteristics is of significant importance for dynamic response analysis and condition assessment of structural systems. Damping is associated with the behavior of the energy dissipation mechanism. Identification of damping ratios based on the sensitivity of dynamic responses and the model updating technique is investigated with numerical and experimental investigations. The effectiveness and performance of using the sensitivity-based model updating method and vibration monitoring data for damping ratios identification are investigated. Numerical studies on a three-dimensional truss bridge model are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Measurement noise effect and the initial finite element modelling errors are considered. The results demonstrate that the damping ratio identification with the proposed approach is not sensitive to the noise effect but could be affected significantly by the modelling errors. Experimental studies on a steel planar frame structure are conducted. The robustness and performance of the proposed damping identification approach are investigated with real measured vibration data. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach has a decent and reliable performance to identify the damping ratios.
