Sintered metallic brake pads and low alloy heat resistance steel disks are applied to mechanical brake systems in high energy moving machines that are associated with recently developed 200km/h trains. This has led to the speed-up of conventional urban rapid transit. In this study, we use a lab-scale dynamometer to investigate the effects of the composition of friction materials on the tribological characteristics of sintered metallic brake pads and low alloy heat resistance steel under dry sliding conditions. We conduct test under a continuous pressure of 5.5 MPa at various speeds. To determine the optimal composition of friction materials for 200 km/h train, we test and the evaluate frictional characteristics such as friction coefficients, friction stability, wear rate, and the temperature of friction material, which depend on the relative composition of the Cu-Sn and Fe components. The results clearly demonstrate that the average friction coefficient is lower for all speed conditions, when a large quantity of iron power is added. The specimen of 25 wt% iron powder that was added decreased the wear of the friction materials and the roughness of the disc surface. However when 35 wt% iron powder was added, the disc roughness and the wear rate of friction materials increased By increasing the amount of iron powder, the surface roughness, and temperature of the friction materials increased, so the average friction coefficients decreased. An oxidation layer of $Fe_2O_3$ was formed on both friction surfaces.
Animal-like robots are serving an important role as a linkage between biology and engineering. So, in this paper, we aim to develop a biomimetic microrobot that mimics the locomotion mechanism of a gastropod. This microrobot has 3 DOF (x, y translation and rotation), and has small size, unlimited traveling range, high resolution and low cost. Its movement can be made using propagation wave that is generated by the controllable sinusoidal voltage source and piezoelectric effects. This soft motion that can be generated by propagation wave and piezoelectric mechanism would be useful for the motion on the slippery surface. So we modeled the propagation wave mechanism including piezoelectric effect and friction on the contact surface, and could know the velocity of the microrobot is dependent on the driving frequency, input voltage peak, propagation wavelength and surface friction coefficient. With these results we design the microrobot, and accomplish its fabrication and experimentation. The development of this microrobot shall be aimed to design an autonomous moving actuator like animal. Also it can be used from micromanipulation system technology to biology and medicine.

Various precision engineering studies have attempted to remove mechanical friction, which causes the performance of a system to deteriorate, from precision positioning devices. Since the classical fluid lubrication method has some disadvantages in clean environments, attention has been focused on magnetic bearings and contact-free systems with their pollution-free characteristics. In this paper, f electromagnets are modeled and analyzed, not only for magnetic bearings but also for contact-free electromagnetic actuators. Three types of electromagnets that are appropriate for various applications were considered using magnetic circuitry theory. The results were experimentally validated.
In a large class of industrial robot manipulators, its end effector for supporting the moving object have designed with mechanical suspension method(gripper). In this paper, We describe a high performance magnetically levitated end effector of robot, where is no mechanical contact and friction.
"Biomimetics" is the study and simulation of biological systems with desired properties. In recent times, biomimetic surfaces have emerged as novel solutions for tribological applications in micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS). These biomimetic surfaces are attractive for MEMS application as they exhibit low adhesion/friction and wear properties at small-scales. In this paper, we present some of the examples of biomimetic surfaces that have potential application in small-scale devices.
Micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) and precision machines require excellent friction and wear characteristics to improve energy efficiency generated during sliding motion. In this study, DLC thin film with high hardness and low friction was deposited on STS304 substrate material by CVD method, and dot-shaped convex and concave micropatterns were fabricated by photolithography process. The diameter of the pattern was 20 ㎛, the pitch was 40 ㎛, and a pattern having a mesh type arrangement was fabricated and an abrasion test was performed. The results of the wear test on the micro pattern confirmed that the friction coefficient characteristics were improved compared to STS 304 and DLC thin films. In addition, in this result, the micro-pattern showed 11.4% more improved friction coefficient than the DLC thin film. The friction coefficient characteristics for convex and concave patterns of the same size showed almost similar results.

As demands on micro-products increase significantly with raising functional integration and increasing complexity, microfoming attracts a lot of attention in the manufacture of micro-products. Since the conventional big forming systems are not adequate to achieve sufficient tolerances of micro-scale parts, it is necessary to reduce the scale of the forming equipment and devices. In addition, understandings on the size effects, which exist in the material behavior and process characterization of microforming processes, need to be expanded. In this study, a miniaturized forming system based on the ball screw and servo motor actuator was developed for the efficient micro-parts production. In addition, tensile tests and cylindrical upsetting experiments were performed to evaluate the performance of the microforming system and to investigate the flow stress and friction size effects in microforming processes.
Currently, fuel efficiency becomes one of critical issues for automotive industries as concerns about environmental and energy problems grow. In an automatic transmission of an automobile, a drag torque due to a viscous drag of a fluid between friction and clutch plates is one of factors that degrade fuel economy. In this work, the drag torque characteristics of a wet clutch was experimentally investigated with respect to rotational speed, temperature of automatic transmission fluid (ATF), and gap between friction and clutch plates. The experimental results showed that drag torque increases to a certain level, and then decrease to the steady state value with increasing rotational speed. This behavior may be associated with two-phase flow of air and ATF at gap between friction and clutch plates. Also, it was found that the maximum drag torque value decreased as ATF viscosity decreases with increasing temperature. However, it was shown that the point at which the maximum drag torque occurs was not significantly affected by the ATF temperature. In addition, maximum drag torque was found to decrease as the gap between friction and clutch plates increased from 0.1 mm to 0.2 mm. Furthermore, it was observed that the generation of maximum drag torque was delayed as the gap increased. The outcomes of this work are expected to be helpful to gain a better understanding of drag torque characteristic of a wet clutch, and may therefore be useful in the design of wet clutch systems with improved performance.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are widely used in polymer composites as filler materials to enhance various characteristics of the composites because of their remarkable mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties. In this study, we investigate the effects of MWCNTs on the electrical and wear characteristics of high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) composites, and compare the results with the effects of carbon black (CB). The HIPS composites are classified as Bare-HIPS, MWCNT-HIPS composites containing 2, 3, 4, and 5 wt% MWCNTs, and CB-HIPS containing 17 wt% CB. Electrical characteristics are evaluated by measuring the surface resistance using a 4-point probe. Wear characteristics are evaluated using the reciprocating wear test, and a chrome steel ball with a curvature of 6.3 mm is used as the counterpart. The results show that the addition of MWCNTs or CB can improve the electrical and wear characteristics of HIPS composites. In the case of MWCNT-HIPS composites, surface resistance, friction coefficient, and specific wear rate decrease as the concentrations of MWCNTs increase. Moreover, the addition of MWCNTs is more effective in improving the electrical and wear characteristics of HIPS composites compared to the addition of CB. To fabricate the HIPS composite with appropriate electrical and wear characteristics, more than 4 wt% MWCNTs is added to HIPS.
With the increasing attention to environmental pollution caused by particulate matter globally, the automotive industry has also become increasingly interested in particulate matter, especially particulate matter generated by automobile brake systems. Here, we designed a coating composition and analyzed its mechanical properties to reduce particulate matter generated by brake systems during braking of vehicles. We designed a composition to check the mechanical properties change by adding Cr3C2 and YSZ to the WC-Ni-Cr composite composition. Based on the designed composition, coating samples were manufactured, and the coating properties were analyzed by Vickers hardness and ball-on-disk tests. As a result of the experiments, we found that the hardness and friction coefficient of the coating increased as the amount of Cr3C2 added decreased. Furthermore, we found that the hardness of the coating layer decreased when YSZ was added at 20vol%, but the friction coefficient was higher than the composition with Cr3C2 addition.
