  • This research was performed to investigate the mechanical performance of lightweight concrete including phase changing material(Low temperature PCM). Micro capsulised PCM consisted of wax type core and melamine based wall. Also, for PCM of one single kind, paraffin wax was inserted into Vermiculite and the surface was coated with melamine resin. Interfacial polymerization is based on the principle that macromolecule reaction takes place on the surfaces between 1-dodecanol(core material) and water (solvent) to form the wall material. Lightweight concrete has compressive strength of 10 MPa, tensile strength of 1.5 MPa, and oven dried density of 1.0kg/liter which included 10%, 20%, or 30% PCM by weight. To do so, this study fabricated light-weight foamed concrete ($1.0kg/m^3$) in pre-foaming method and mixed it with PCM micro capsule of 1-dodecanol and melamine to examine its physical properties.

  • Carbon/epoxy composite bipolar plate (BP) is a BP that is likely to replace existing graphite bipolar plate of vanadium redox flow cell (VRFB) due to its high mechanical properties and productivity. Multi-functional carbon/epoxy composite BP requires graphite coating or additional surface treatment to reduce interfacial contact resistance (ICR). However, the expanded graphite coating has the disadvantage of having low durability under VRFB operating conditions, and the surface treatments incur additional costs. In this work, an excessive resin absorption method is developed, which uniformly removes the resin rich area on the surface of the BP to expose carbon fibers by applying polyester fabric. This method not only reduces ICR by exposing carbon fibers to BP surfaces, but also forms a unique ditch pattern that can effectively hold carbon felt electrodes in place. The acidic environmental durability, mechanical properties, and gas permeability of the developed carbon/epoxy composite BP are experimentally verified.

  • Composite materials are currently used in aero-space industry, sport and leisure industry but it has many problems such as mechanical properties deterioration by moisture absorption. In this study, we appraised interlaminar shear strength with specimen that immersed/ immersed-dried in water environment(distilled/sea) during $100{\sim}200$days. In the result, properties degradation of resin part and silan part by moisture absorption is judged early on main cause of interlaminar shear strength, and later destruction of mechanical bonding between silan part and fiber by moisture absorption is Judged later main cause of interlaminar shear strength. In conclusion, the recovery of interlaminar shear strength is judged to difficult due to interfacial destruction by moisture when pass over irreversible by moisture in composite material.

  • Self-sensing and interfacial evaluation of Ni nanowire/polymer composites were investigated using electro-macromechanical technique, which can be used fur a feasible sensing measurement on tensile and compressive loading/consequent unloading, temperature, and humidity. Mechanical properties of Ni nanowire with different aspect ratio and adding contents in either epoxy or silicone composites were measured indirectly using electro-pullout test under uniform and non-uniform cyclic loadings. Comparing apparent modulus with the conventional mechanical tensile modulus of Ni nanowire/epoxy composites, the trends were consistent with each other. Ni nanowire/epoxy composites showed the sensing response on humidity and temperature. Self-sensing on applied tensile and compressive loading/unloading was also responded for Ni nanowire/silicone composites via electrical contact resistivity showing the opposite trend between tension and compression. It can be due to the different electrically-interconnecting mechanisms of dispersed Ni nanowires embedded in silicone matrix.

  • The effects of acid-treated MWCNT and coupling agent on properties of MWCNT/SBR are investigated in this work. The MWCNTs oxidized using sulfuric and nitric acids were analyzed by the Raman scattering and Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR). The FT-IR results indicate the presence of -COOH groups in the treated samples, and Raman spectroscopy of the acidtreated MWCNTs further corroborates the formation of surface defect due to the introduction of carboxyl groups. And the nanocomposites reinforced with MWCNTs were characterized extensively using the scanning electron microscopy(SEM), electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and tensile properties measurements. The results showed that nanocomposites onto acid-treated MWCNTs enhanced mechanical properties compared to those containing MWCNTs without acid treatment. These findings confirmed the improved interfacial interactions between MWCNTs and SBR arising from the coupling agents. But the electrical and thermal conductivity of nanocomposites decreased due to the chopping and formation of surface defects of MWCNTs.

  • This study examined the fabrication and thermal properties of fumed silica/ceramic wool inorganic composites. A predetermined quantity of fumed silica and ceramic wool was mixed uniformly into a slurry state and stabilized in the mold at room temperature, and converted to a massive foamed body through a complete drying process at $150^{\circ}C$. Although the samples without polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as an interfacial adhesive showed a bulk density of 0.6-0.8 $g/cm^3$ in the range, 10-70wt% fumed silica, those samples with 3wt% PVA exhibited remarkably lower bulk densities with enhanced mechanical and thermal insulation properties, without thermal cracking even above $800^{\circ}C$. The K-factor of the samples was lower in proportion to the fumed silica contents, showing good thermal insulation properties of ca. 0.08 $W/m^{\circ}K$ at $500^{\circ}C$ for the sample with 30wt% fumed silica.

  • In this work, the effect of biodegradable poly(butylene succinate)(PBS) in difunctional epoxy(21:P) resin was investigated in terms of rheological properties, cure kinetics, thermal stabilities, and mechanical interfacial properties. Rheological properties of the blend system were measured under isothermal condition using a rheometer. Cross-linking activation energies($\textrm{E}_c$) were determined from the Arrhenius equation based on gel time and curing temperature. The $\textrm{E}_c$ was increased in the presence of 10 wt% PBS as compared with neat 2EP. From the DSC results of the blends, the cure activation energies($\textrm{E}_a$) showed a similar behavior with $\textrm{E}_c$ due to the increased intermolecular interaction between 2EP and PBS. The decomposed activation energies($\textrm{E}_t$) for the thermal stability derived from the integral method of Horowitz-Metzger equation, were also increased in 10 wt% PBS. In addition, 20 wt% PBS showed the highest critical stress intensity factor($\textrm{E}_{IC}$). which was explained by increasing the fracture toughness of the 2EP/PBS blend systems.

  • Recent studies regarding the properties of carbon nanotubes (CNT) have made remarkable progress in CNT fibers research. However no CNT fibers showed the properties of CNTs because CNTs in fibers have weak interfacial bonding with low shear modulus in the pristine form. Thus, it is upmost interest to develop and employ post-production treatments to the CNT fibers that would potentially improve their properties. In this study, post-treatments resulted in improvement of strength of CNT fibers up to 40%.

  • Plasma treatment is frequently used to increase surface functionality and surface activity. It enables to improve various surface properties such as catalytic selectivity, printability, and interfacial adhesion between various materials. Surface or the ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) is exposed under an atmospheric pressure plasma torch (APPT), generated by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), and the treated surfaces are systemically investigated. Argon, air, and oxygen are used as a processing gas. Properties of the treated EVA surfaces are investigated by the zeta-potential measurements and surface free energies. It is shown that the plasma treatment leads to a drastic increase of surface functional groups of EVA, as the increase of its adhesion energy ($G_{IC}$). Therefore, it is concluded that the APPT process is an effective means to improve adhesion of EVA and polyurethane (PU).

  • Various polylactic acid (PLA) blends were reinforced with untreated or silane-treated micro-sized cellulose fiber (MCF), successfully prepared as 3D printing filaments and then printed using a fused filament fabrication (FFF) 3D printer. In this study, we focused on developing 3D-printed MCF/PLA composites through silane treatment of MCF and investigating the effect of silane treatment on the various properties of FFF 3D-printed composites. Fourier transform infrared spectra confirmed the increase in hydrophobic properties of silane-treated MCF by showing the new absorption peaks at 1,100 cm-1, 1,030 cm-1, and 815 cm-1 representing C-NH2, Si-O-Si, and Si-CH2 bonds, respectively. In scanning electron microscope images of silane-treated MCF filled PLA composites, the improved interfacial adhesion between MCF and PLA matrix was observed. The mechanical properties of the 3D-printed MCF/PLA composites with silane-treated MCF were improved compared to those of the 3D-printed MCF/PLA composites with untreated MCF. In particular, the highest tensile and flexural modulus values were observed for S-MCF10 (5,784.77 MPa) and S-MCF5 (2,441.67 MPa), respectively. The thermal stability of silane-treated MCF was enhanced by delaying the initial thermal decomposition temperature compared to untreated MCF. The thermal decomposition temperature difference at T95 was around 26℃. This study suggests that the effect of silane treatment on the 3D-printed MCF/PLA composites is effective and promising.
