  • Water jet has been employed in extraacton of minerals for many years but the applications of low pressure jent s ar emodfined to some fields. With increasing strength of equipment it is possible to consider the use of high speed water jets for cutting hard rock. The high speed water jet technology is applied to various engineering fiels such as precessing rocks, quarrying rocks, mechanical fracturing as wel as rock excavation under the sea. For slot cutting in rocks with high speed water jets it is necessary to establish the empirical formula for estiamation of the cutting depth. The cutting depth is influenced by cutting parameters such as driving pressure, traverse speed, standoff distance, and shape and diameter of nozzel. Tests were carried out with a variety of cutting parameters on three types of granite. Nozzle pressures ranged from 1,200 to 2,800 bar, traverse speeds from 0.45 to 10.38 cm/min, standoff distances from 4.5 to 13.5 mm, and three types of nozzle diameter were used.

  • Thermo-hydro-chemico-mechanical evolution of the radioactive waste repository and surrounding geological media is one of the key issues for the radioactive waste disposal. This article describes not only the basic context for the site selection but also a reasonable strategy for the repository related research based on the results of the French repository project carried out by ANDRA (National radioactive waste management agency). To have some alternatives for the determination of a preferable depth and geological media, it would be recommendable to establish a database system. The curing process of the fractures or microfissures in the EDZ (Excavation Disturbed Zone) during operation time has to be examined considering the evolution of the EDZ and the reversibility of the repository. It is prerequisite to carry out a feasibility study and to validate the design concept and design parameters in a properly constructed underground research laboratory (URL) in Korea.

  • Mostly mine support(Rock bolt and Support) which is currently general for reinforcements of a large scale tunnel is applied, Some executing a reinforcement to Poor ground by cast-in-place shotcrete. However On domestic mine conditions that couldn't having every time after mine tunnel excavation, it couldn't ensure the field batch plant which is a fixed in an issue of economies and site security, constructing it by supply gets from shotcrete materials combined in neighborhood ready mixed concrete manufacturing plants. carried shotcrete in ready mixed concrete manufacturing plants as migration length and time are falling off in quality. But, it is difficult for construction quality control By quality control arbitrariness absence at on-scene. In the present study, carry out Laboratory Test by kinds and percentages of accelerating agent for evalution of Mechanical Property and Durability of Shotcrete.

  • This study is to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of flowable backfill and offer a guide line of mixture proportion based on soil types for constructing underground power utilities. Flowable backfill is known as soil-cement slurry, void fill, and controlled low-strength material(CLSM). The benefits of CLSM are reduced equipment costs, faster construction, re-excavation in the future, and the ability to place materials in confined spaces, which are narrow parts or perimeters of underground power cables nearly impossible for compaction. The flowable slurry mixed with 17 soils and 6 accelerated mixtures in the laboratory were evaluated for flowability and unconfined compressive strength to meet the target values of this study.

  • Excessive amount of groundwater flowed into tunnel, while constructing Incheon international airport railway. Tunnel passes under subway line no. 2 with only 1.76 m below. To protect the existing structure, TRcM excavation method was applied. As station and construction shaft are already constructed, which are located back and forth of TRcM section, 86.4 ton per day of groundwater inflow is against expectation. To identify mechanism of excessive water inflow, hydraulic back analyses were performed. Then, hydro-mechanical coupled analysis were also performed with the hydrogeologic parameters identified, whose results are investigated for checking the stability of adjacent structures to the tunnel under construction. And a number of mechanical analyses were also performed to check the hydro-mechanical coupling effect. The result from the mechanical analysis shows that subsidence and tunnel ceiling displacement will be 0.85 mm and 1.32 mm. The result of hydro-mechanical couple analysis shows that subsidence and maximum tunnel ceiling displacement will be 1.2 mm and 1.72 mm. Additional displacements caused by groundwater draw down were identified, however, displacement is minute.

  • Since there is 70% of the land in South Korea is forest, tunnel constructions by blasting are common for building railways and roads. The damage to the bedrock and the development of overbreak near the face of the tunnel during the blasting directly affect the safety of the tunnel and the maintenance after the construction. Therefore, there is a need to investigate the damage zone in the bedrock after the blasting. The damage zone changes the properties of the bedrock and decreases the safety. Especially, the coefficient of permeability of the damaged bedrock increases dramatically, which is considered very important in construction. There is a lack of research on the damage that bedrock is received with respect to the amount of explosives in blasting, which is required for the design of optimum support in blast excavation that maximizes the support of the bedrock. Therefore, in this research, numerical analysis was performed based on the field experiment data in order to understand the mechanical characteristics of the bedrock after to the blast load and to analyze the damage that the bedrock receives from the blast load. In addition, a method was proposed for selecting the optimum blast pressure for train tunnel design with respect to the damage zone.

  • A 3-D numerical analysis was carried out to observe potential effects of orientation of inherent weak zones to tunnel behaviors and stress distributions during tunnel excavation. Weak zones used for the analysis were placed at the upper 1D part from crown, on the crown and on the center of face, using orientations derived from the 6th RMR parameter for assessment of joint orientation effect on tunnel. Mechanical properties of rock mass were derived through a in-situ displacement measurement-based back analysis. Finally, a classification chart for crown settlement with five ranks based on orientation and location of weak zones is suggested.

  • The design of tunnels in rock masses often demands more informations on geologic features and rock mass properties than acquired by usual field survey and laboratory testings. In practice, the situation that a perfect set of geological and mechanical input data is given to geomechanics design engineer is rare, while the engineers are asked to achieve a high level of reliability in their design products. This study presents an artificial neural network which is developed to resolve the difficulties encountered in conventional design techniques, particulary the problem of deteriorating the confidence of existing numerical techniques such as the finite element, boundary element and distinct element methods due to the incomplete adn vague input data. The neural network has inferring capabilities to identify the possible failure modes, support requirements and its timing for underground openings, from previous case histories. Use of the neural network has resulted in a better estimate of the correlation between systems of rock mass classifications such as the RMR and Q systems. A back propagation learning algorithm together with a multi-layer network structure is adopted to enhance the inferential accuracy and efficiency of the neural network. A series of experiments comparing the results of the neural network with the actual field observations are performed to demonstrate the abilities of the artificial neural network as a new tunnel design assistance system.
