Oscillartory thermocapillary flow of high Prandtl number fluids in the half-zone configuration is investigated. Based on experimental observations, one oscillation cycle consists of an active period where the surface flow is strong and the hot corner region is extended and a slow period where the opposite occurs. It is found that during oscillations the deformation of free surface plays an important role and a surface deformation parameter S correlates the experimental data well on the onset of oscillations. A scaling analysis is performed to analyze the basic steady flow in the parametric ranges of previous ground-based experiments and shows that the flow is viscous dominant and is mainly driven in the hot corner. The predicted scaling laws agree well with the numerical results. It is postulated that the oscillations are caused by a time lag between the surface and return flows. A deformation parameter S represents the response time of the return flow to the surface flow.

Enhanced lower order shear deformation theory is developed in this study. Generally, lower order theories are not adequate to predict accurate deformation and stress distribution through the thickness of laminated plate. For the accurate prediction of detailed stress and deformation distributions through the thickness, higher order zigzag theories have been proposed. However, in most cases, simplified zigzag higher order theory requires $C_1$, shape functions in finite element implementation. In commercial FE softwares, $C_1$, shape functions are not so common in plate and shell analysis. Thus zigzag theories are useful for the highly accurate prediction of thick composite behaviors but they are not practical in the sense that they cannot be used conveniently in the commercial package. In practice, iso-parametric $C_0$ plate model is the standard model for the analysis and design of composite laminated plates and shells. Thus in the present study, an enhanced lower order shear deformation theory is developed. The proposed theory requires only $C_0$ shape function in FE implementation. The least-squared energy error between the lower order theory and higher order theory is minimized. An enhanced lower order shear deformation theory(ELSDT) in this paper is proposed for smart structure under complex loadings. The ELSDT is constructed by the strain energy transformation and fully coupled mechanical, electric loading cases are studied. In order to obtain accurate prediction, zigzag in-plane displacement and transverse normal deformation are considered in the deformation Held. In the electric behavior, open-circuit condition as well as closed-circuit condition is considered. Through the numerous examples, the accuracy and robustness of present theory are demonstrated.

Cold gas dynamic spray or cold-spray is a deposition process, which causes deformation of a thin substrate. The deformation is usually convex to the deposited side. In this research, the main cause of the deformation was investigated using 6061-T6 aluminum alloy. The effects or anisotropic coefficient or thermal expansion (CTE) or the deposited layer by cold-spray and residual stress were studied by experiments and finite element analysis. The Hole Drilling method was applied to measure residual stress in the cold-spray layer and substrate. The data obtained by the experiments were used for the analysis of substrate deformation. From the result of the analysis, it was concluded that compressive residual stress was the main reason of substrate deformation while CTE had little effect.
Mechanical properties of the materials used for transportations and industrial machinery under high strain rate loading conditions such as seismic loading are required to provide appropriate safety assessment to these mechanical structures. The Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) technique with a special experimental apparatus can be used to obtain the material behavior under high strain rate loading conditions. In this paper, dynamic deformation behaviors of the aluminum alloys such as A12024-T4, A1606 IT-6 and A17075-T6 under both high strain rate compressive and tensile loading conditions are determined using the SHPB technique.
Arc-spot welding is generally used in joining of precise parts such as case and core in electric compressor. It is important to control joining deformation in electric compressor because clearance control of micrometer order is needed for excellent airtightness and anti-nose. The countermeasures for this deformation in field have mainly been dependent on rule of try and error by operator's experience because of productivities. For control this deformation problem without influence on productivities, development of exact simulation model should be needed. In this study, on the basis of previous study, the analysis model io predict deformation of precise order in arc-spot welded structure with non-uniform stiffness is brought up through feedback and tuning between monitoring data and analysis results. For this, deformation monitoring system was built and boundary condition considering mechanical melting temperature was applied.

A viscoelastic constitutive equation of rubber is proposed under small oscillatory load superimposed on large static deformation. The proposed model is derived through linearization of Simos nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive model and reference configuration transformation. Statically pre-deformed state is used as reference configuration. The model is extended to a generalized viscoelastic constitutive equation including widely-used Mormans model. Static deformation correction factor is introduced to consider the influence of pre-strain on the relaxation function. The model is tested for dynamic behavior of rubbers with different carbon black fractions. It is shown that the constitutive equation with static deformation correction factor agrees well with test results.

During the turning of the workpiece, cutting heat causes thermal deformation of the cutting tool which influences the surface characteristics of the machined part. This paper presents a study of thermal deformation of the cutting tool. For this purpose, cutting tool is modeled based on Pro/Engineering and temperature and deformation are simulated by means of the finite element method. The thermal effect on the surface roughness profile is simulated by using surface-shaping system.
In this study, with the finite element method we numerically investigate the deformation of liquid drops surrounded by Newtonian or non-Newtonian viscous medium in the axisymmetric contraction flow. 1, 2 or 4 Newtonian or non-Newtonian drops are considered and the truncated power-law model is applied In order to describe non-Newtonian viscous behavior for both fluids. In this type of flow the drop exhibits considerably large deformation, and thus techniques of unstructured mesh generation and auto-remeshing are employed to accurately express the fluid mechanical behavior. We examine the deformation pattern of liquid drops with viscosity dependence different from that of the surrounding medium and also explain their interactions by comparing relative position or speed of drop front.

Because CV Joint which is one of the component of automobile power train system communicates high power and performs power steering function, it requires high qualities such as high strength, high toughness and high fatigue resistance. This component undergoes a series of production processes such as forging, machining and heat treatment and required properties for this component depends on plastic deformation and heat treatment heavily. Therefore in this study, in order to these effects on mechanical properties due to plastic deformation and heat treatment we performed heat treatment following plastic deformation and then tensile test.
The shear spinning process, where the plastic deformation zone is localized in a very small portion of the workpiece, shows a promise for increasingly broader application to the production of axially symmetric parts. In this paper, the three components of working force are calculated by the newly proposed deformation model in which the spinning process is understood as shearing deformation after uniaxial yielding by bending, and shear stress, $\tau_{rz}$ becomes $\kappa$, yield limit in pure shear, in the deformation zone. The tangential forces are first calculated and the feed forces and the normal forces are obtained by the assumption of uniform distribution of roller pressure on the contact surface. The optimum contact area is obtained by minimizing the bending energy required to get the assumed deformation of the blank. The calculated forces are compared with experimental results. A comparison shows that theoretical prediction is reasonably in good agreement with experimental results.
