This paper addresses the problem of a torch path generation for the 2D laser cutting of a stock plate nested with resular or irregular parts. Under the constaint of the relative positions of parts enforced by nesting, the developed torch path algorithm generate feasible cutting path. In this paper, the basic object is a polygon( a many-slide figure) with holes. A part may be represented as a number of line segments connected end-to-end in counterclockwise order, and formed a closed contour as requied for cutting paths. The objective is to tranverse this cutting contours with a minimum path length. This paper proposes a simulated annealing based dtorch path algorithm, that is an improved version of previously suggested TSP models. Since everypiercing point of parts is not fixed in advance, the algorithm solves as relazed optimization problem for the constraint, thich is one of the main features of the proposed algorithm. For aolving the torch path optimization problem, an efficient generation mechanism of neighborhood structure and as annealing shedule were introduced. In this way, a global solution can be obtained in a reasonable time. Seveeral examples are represented to ilustrate the method.

In order to fulfil the requirements of the various performance profiles of ceramic cutting tools, six different SiC-based ceramics have been fabricated by hot-pressing (SiC--${Si}_3 {N}_4$composites) or by hot-pressing and subsequent annealing (monolithic SiC and SiC-TiC composites). Correlation between the annealing time and the corresponding microstructure and the mechanical properties of resulting ceramics have been investigated. The grain size of both ${Si}_3 {N}_4$and SiC in SiC-${Si}_3 {N}_4$composites increased with the annealing time. Monolithic SiC has the highest hardness, SiC-TiC composite the highest toughness, and the SiC-${Si}_3 {N}_4$composite the highest strength among the ceramics investigated. The hardness of SiC-${Si}_3 {N}_4$composites was relatively independent of the grain size, but dependent on the sintered density. The cutting performance of the newly developed SiC-based ceramic cutting tools will be described in Part 2 of this paper.

Four kinds of $Si_3N_4$-based ceramic cutting tools with different sintering time were fabricated to investigante the effect of sintering time on the microstructure, mechanical properties, grain sizes and the cutting performance. An endeavor was also made to determine the relation among mechanical property, Brain size and tool life. $Si_3N_4$ home made cutting tool sintered for 1 hour under $1760^{\circ}$ temperature and 25MPa pressure showed the best cutting performance among selected ceramic tools during machining both Bray cast iron and heat treated SCM440. Multiple linear regression model was used to estimate the tool lift from mechanical property, grain size and showed good result. It was also shown that hardness imposed the biggest offect on tool life.

In this study, a microscale drilling process was conducted to evaluate the cutting characteristics of functionally graded materials. A mixture of M2 and Cu powders were formed and sintered to produce disk specimens of various compositions. Subsequently, a microscale hole was created in the specimen by using a desktop-size micro-machining system. By using design of experiments and analysis of variance, it was found that the M2-Cu composition, spindle speed, and the interactions between these two factors had significant effects on the magnitude of cutting forces. However, the influence of feed rate on the cutting force was negligible. A mathematical model was established to predict the cutting force under a wide range of process conditions, and the reliability of the model was confirmed experimentally. In addition, it was observed that increasing the wt% of Cu in an M2-Cu specimen increased the high-frequency amplitude of cutting forces.

Productivity improvement and cost reduction in the aircraft industry have become major industrial objectives, and improving productivity by reducing machining time has become a key focus. When numerical cutting code is created by CAM software, such as CATIA or UG-NX, it is impossible to control machining feed speed using cutting force changes depending on the machining tool path. However, machining an aircraft engine part from difficult material, such as Inconel 718, takes a long time, and tool chipping or breakage often occurs from forcing the machining path too quickly. This study investigated and verified the reliability of the AdvantEdge production module (PM)using cutting power tests. In particular, diffuser and diffuser case parts were considered, comparing cutting power and machining time using AdvantEdge PM and CATIA.

In a high precision vertical machining center, the estimation of cutting forces is important for many reasons such as prediction of chatter vibration, surface roughness and so on, and cutting forces are difficult to predict because they are very complex and time variant. In order to predict the cutting forces of end-milling process for various cutting conditions, a mathematical model is important and this model is based on chip load, cutting geometry, and the relationship between cutting forces and chip loads. Specific cutting force coefficients of the model have been obtained as interpolation function types by averaging farces of cutting tests. In this paper, the coefficients are obtained by neural network and the results of the conventional method and those of the proposed method are compared. The results show that the neural network method gives more correct values than the function type and that in teaming stage as the omitted numbers of experimental data increases the average errors increase.

Any relative deformation between the cutting tool and the workpiece at the machining point, results directly in form and dimensional errors. The source of relative deformations between the cutting tool and the workpiece at the contact point may be due to thermal, weight, and cutting forces. Thermal and weight deformations can be measured at various positions of the machine tool and stored in the compensation registers of the CNC unit and compensated the errors during machining. However, the cutting force induced errors are difficult to compensate because estimation of cutting forces are difficult. To minimize the error induced by cutting forces, it is important to improve the machining accuracy. This paper presents the pre-calculated method of form error induced by cutting forces. In order to estimate cutting forces, Isakov method is used and the method is verified by comparing with the experimental results. In order to this, a cylindrical-outer-diameter turning experiments are carried out according to cutting conditions.

This paper presents a method to predict tool deflection induced by the thermal distribution and the cutting force using FEM in milling operation. The thermal distribution of cutting tool was predicted using FEM after measuring the temperature of the end of tool and of the tool holder. The thermal deflection of cutting tool was predicted using FEM as well. The tool deflection induced by the cutting force was analyzed with the solid model of cutting tool. An end mill tool caused most of tool deflection comparing to tool holder. Most of thermal deflection came from Z-direction and most of tool deflection induced by the cutting force came from X and Y direction. Precision cutting will be accomplished when tool locations are generated considering the thermal deflection of cutting tool and the tool deflection induced by the cutting force in CAD/CAM.

In end milling process the undeformed chip thickness and the cutting force components vary periodically with phase change of the tool. In this study, up end milling process is transformed to the equivalent oblique cutting. The varying undeformed chip thickness and the cutting force components in end milling process are replaced with the equivalent average ones. Then it can be possible to analyze the chip-tool friction and shear process in the shear plane of the end milling process by the equivalent oblique cutting system. According to this analysis, when cutting Inconel 718, 61, 64 and 55% of the total energy is consumed in the shear process with the helix angle 30$^{\circ}$, 40$^{\circ}$ and 50$^{\circ}$ respectively, and the balance is consumed in the friction process. With the helix angle of 40$^{\circ}$ the specific cutting energy consumed is smaller than with the helix angle 30$^{\circ}$ and 50$^{\circ}$.

End-milling has been used widely in industrial system because it is effective to a material manufacturing with various shapes. Recently the end-milling processing is needed the high-precise technique with good surface roughness and rapid time in precision machine part and electronic part. The optimum mechanical vibration of main spindle, surface roughness and cutting temperature have an effect on end-milling condition such as, cutting direction, revolution of spindle, feed rate and depth of cut, etc. Therefore, this study carried to decide the working condition for optimum mechanical vibration of main spindle, surface roughness and cutting temperature using design of experiments, ANOVA and characteristic function. From the results of experimentation, mechanical vibration has an effect on revolution of spindle, radial depth of cut, and axial depth of cut. The surface roughness has an effect on cutting direction, revolution of spindle and depth of cut. And then the optimum condition used design of experiments is upward cutting In cutting direction, 600 rpm in revolution of spindle, 240 mm/min in feed rate, 2 mm in axial depth of cut and 0.25 mm in radial depth of cut. By design of experiments and characteristic function, it is effectively represented shape characteristics of mechanical vibration, surface roughness and cutting temperature in end-milling.
