The mechanical behaviour and stability of coal mining engineering underground is significantly affected by ground water. In this study, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging (NMRI) technique was employed to determine the water distribution characteristics in coal specimens during saturation process, based on which the functional rule for water distribution was proposed. Then, using discrete element method (DEM), an innovative numerical modelling method was developed to simulate water-weakening effect on coal behaviour considering moisture content and water distribution. Three water distribution numerical models, namely surface-wetting model, core-wetting model and uniform-wetting model, were established to explore the water distribution influences. The feasibility and validity of the surface-wetting model were further demonstrated by comparing the simulation results with laboratory results. The investigation reveals that coal mechanical properties are affected by both water saturation coefficient and water distribution condition. For all water distribution models, micro-cracks always initiate and nucleate in the water-rich area and thus lead to distinct macro fracture characteristics. With the increase of water saturation coefficient, the failure of coal tends to be less violent with less cracks and ejected fragments. In addition, the core-wetting specimen is more sensitive to water than specimens with other water distribution models.

In this article, large amplitude bending behaviour of laminated composite flat panel under combined effect of moisture, temperature and mechanical loading is investigated. The laminated composite panel model has been developed mathematically by introducing the geometrical nonlinearity in Green-Lagrange sense in the framework of higher-order shear deformation theory. The present study includes the degraded composite material properties at elevated temperature and moisture concentration. In order to achieve any general case, all the nonlinear higher order terms have been included in the present formulation and the material property variations are introduced through the micromechanical model. The nonlinear governing equation is obtained using the variational principle and discretised using finite element steps. The convergence behaviour of the present numerical model has been checked. The present proposed model has been validated by comparing the responses with those available published results. Some new numerical examples have been solved to show the effect of various parameters on the bending behaviour of laminated composite flat panel under hygro-thermo-mechanical loading.
The subject of the ongoing research work is to analyze the composite action of the structural elements of composite slabs with profiled steel decking by experimental and numerical studies. The mechanical and frictional interlocks result in a complex behaviour and failure under horizontal shear action. This is why the design characteristics can be determined only by standardized experiments. The aim of the current research is to develop a computational method which can predict the behaviour of embossed mechanical bond under shear actions, in order to derive the design characteristics of composite slabs with profiled steel decking. In the first phase of the research a novel experimental analysis is completed on an individual concrete encased embossment of steel strip under shear action. The experimental behaviour modes and failure mechanisms are determined. In parallel with the tests a finite element model is developed to follow the ultimate behaviour of this type of embossment, assuming that the phenomenon is governed by the failure of the steel part. The model is verified and applied to analyse the effect of embossment's parameters on the behaviour. In the extended investigation different friction coefficients, plate thicknesses, heights and the size effects are studied. On the basis of the results the tendencies of the ultimate behaviour and resistance by the studied embossment's characteristics are concluded.
In this paper, a modified and representative unit cell model was employed to study the crush behaviour of a closed cell metallic foam. The unit cell which captures the main geometrical features of the metallic foam considered was used to simulate crush behaviour in metallic foams. Both analytical using limit analysis and numerical using the finite element method were used to study the collapse behaviour of the cell. The analytical crushing stress of the foam was compared with FE results and was found to be in good agreement.
The current paper aims at investigating the nonlinear dynamical behaviour of an electrically actuated microcantilever. The microcantilever is excited by a combination of AC and DC voltages. The nonlinear equation of motion of the microcantilever is obtained by means of force and moment balances. A high-dimensional Galerkin scheme is then applied to reduce the equation of motion to a discrete model. A numerical technique, based on the pseudo-arclength continuation method, is used to solve the discretized model. The electrostatic deflection of the microcantilever and static pull-in instabilities, due to the DC voltage, are analyzed by plotting the so-called DC voltage-deflection curves. At the simultaneous presence of the DC and AC voltages, the nonlinear dynamical behaviour of the microcantilever is analyzed by plotting frequency-response and force-response curves.
The effect of silicon carbide (SiC) and graphite fillers incorporation on the abrasive wear behaviour of glass-vinyl ester (G-V) composites have been investigated. The three-body abrasive wear behaviour was assessed by rubber wheel abrasion tests (RWAT). The worn surfaces were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The addition of SiC and graphite fillers in G-V composite improves the abrasion resistance under different loads/abrading distances. The SEM studies indicate the reasons for failure of composites and influencing parameters.

This paper deals with a new designed joint system for single-layer spatial structures. As the stability of these structures is greatly influenced by the joint behaviour, the aim of this paper is the characterization of the joint response in bending through Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis using ABAQUS. The behaviour of the joints studied here was influenced by many geometrical factors, such as bolts and plate sizes, distance between bolts and end-plate thickness. The study comprised five models of joints with different values of those parameters. The numerical results were compared to the results of previous experimental tests and the agreement was good enough. The differences between the numerical and experimental initial stiffness are attributed to the simplifications introduced when modelling the bolt threads as well as the presence of residual stresses in the test specimens.

The technique of fretting fatigue test was developed and fretting fatigue tests of A12024-T4 were conducted under several conditions. The newly developed calibration methods for measuring surface contact tractions showed good linearity and repeatability. The plate type specimen to which tow bridge type pads were attached and vision system was used to observe the crack behaviour. The oblieque cracks appeared in the early stage of crack growth and they became mode I cracks as they grow about 1 mm. The mode I transition points were found to be longer when surface tractions are higher or bulk stress is lower. Before the crack becomes mode I crack, 'well point' where crack grow about rate is minimum, was detected under every experimental condition. The crack behaviour was found to be affected by surface tractions, contact area, bulk stress. It was also found that partial slip and stick condition is most detrimental and the crack starts from the boundary of stick and slip. For gross slip crack started at the outside edge of pad. After crack mode transition, fretting fatigue cracks showed almost same behaviour of plain mode I fatigue cracks. Equivalent stress intensity factor was used to analyze the behaviour of fretting fatigue cracks and it was found that stress intensity factors can be applied to fretting fatigue cracks.
This study was carried out to clarify the mechanical behaviour of the earlywood and the latewood to the compressive load applied parallel to the grain. The results from the analysis of Japanese cedar wood (Cryptomeria japonica) were used to introduce a concept on stress-strain behaviour of the earlywood and the latewood. There was a significant differences in the mechanical behaviour of the earlyWood and the latewood. In the earlywood, the rate of cell wall upon annual ring was almost similar and the strain increased linearly with the stress increased. However, the rate of cell wall upon annual ring varied in the latewood and the strain of that increased curve-linearly with the stress increased. The longitudinal compression modulus of elasticity (MOE) variation by loading speed on latewood specimens and earlywood specimens shows no significant difference. The modulus of rupture (MOR) and MOE of latewood were about 4 times higher than those of earlywood.
This paper presents results from an investigation of the structural behaviour of a very slender 90 m high steel chimney erected at V$\ddot{a}$xj$\ddot{o}$ in southern Sweden in 1995. The chimney is equipped with a mechanical friction-type damper at the top. Due to a mistake during erection and installation of the chimney the transport fixings of the damper were not released properly and the chimney developed extensive oscillations in the very first period of service. This caused a great number of fatigue cracks to occur within a few months of service. After the functioning of the damper had been restored and the fatigue cracks were repaired an extensive program was initiated in 1996 to monitor the structural behaviour of the chimney under wind loading. In the investigation data were collected for more than six years of continuous measurements and regular observations of the chimney. The data obtained have some general relevance with respect to wind data, behaviour of a slender structure under wind loading, and the effect of a mechanical damper. Also some theoretical studies were performed as part of the investigation of the chimney.
