  • The rapid technology developments in smartphones have created a significant opportunity for their use in structural live load measurements. This paper presents extensive experiments conducted in two stages to investigate this opportunity. Shaking table tests were carried out in the first stage using selected popular smartphones to measure the sinusoidal waves of various frequencies, the sinusoidal sweeping, and earthquake waves. Comparison between smartphone measurements and real inputs showed that the smartphones used in this study gave reliable measurements for harmonic waves in both time and frequency domains. For complex waves, smartphone measurements should be used with caution. In the second stage, three-dimensional motion capture technology was employed to explore the capacity of smartphones for measuring the movement of individuals in walking, bouncing and jumping activities. In these tests, reflective markers were attached to the test subject. The markers' trajectories were recorded by the motion capture system and were taken as references. The smartphone measurements agreed well with the references when the phone was properly fixed. Encouraged by these experimental validation results, smartphones were attached to moving participants of this study. The phones measured the acceleration near the center-of-mass of his or her body. The human-induced loads were then reconstructed by the acceleration measurements in conjunction with a biomechanical model. Satisfactory agreement between the reconstructed forces and that measured by a force plate was observed in several instances, clearly demonstrating the capability of smartphones to accurately assist in obtaining human-induced load measurements.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate knee muscle strength, balance, and proprioception by walking while giving weight to the ankle joint at a load of 0%, 10%, and 15% gradient on a treadmill. Methods : Twenty-four subjects were divided into three groups. Group A walked on a 0% gradient while giving weight to the ankle joint as a load. Group B walked on a 10% gradient while giving weight to the ankle joint as a load. Group C walked on a 15% gradient while giving weight to the ankle joint as a load. This was performed three times per week for four weeks. The walking speed was set at 4km/hour and the walking time was set at 20 minutes. Measurements were performed before and after the experiment. Biodex medical system and Balance system SD were used as measuring instruments. Results : There was no significant difference between the gradients in muscle strength, balance and proprioception. However, there were differences in pretest and posttest measurements for muscle strength, balance and proprioception in each gradient. In particular, the gradient of 10% showed a significant difference. Conclusion : According to the results of this study, to use a 10% gradient is effective when walking while giving weight to the ankle joint as a load.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide obese middle school girls with walking and behavior modification program(WBMP) by investigating effects of the exercise on their body composition(BC), physical fitness(PF) and metabolic syndrome(MS). Analysis result of the difference between before and after the exercise(paired and independent t-test) was acquired by measuring BC, PF and MS for 12 weeks(60min/day, three a week). 24 Volunteers were 14 years over ${\geq}223.64kg/m^2$ and 15 years over ${\geq}24.00kg/m^2$. In the body composition, waist circumference(WC), body fat mass(BFM), %fat, arm muscle circumference(AMC), total body water(TBW), physical score(PS) were significant difference between the exercise group(EG) and the control group(CG), also including all factors in PF. The components of metabolic syndrome were significant difference between EG and CG, but HDL-C, systolic & diastolic blood pressure were no difference. The metabolic syndrome factors by separate of waist girth were no difference between EG and CG, but BMI, diastolic blood pressure were significant difference. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 4 of 24(16.7%) before intervention, but it dropped from 2 to 1 after intervention in WBMP. The components of metabolic syndrome was distributed a big WC>low HDL-C>high TG>hypertension. The changes of AMC, We, PS, BW, 50m run and BFM effect the factors on BMI(35%), WHR(waist-hip ratio, 69%), HDL-C(42%), fasting blood glucose(65%), HOMA-IR index(34%) and systolic blood pressure(39%) respectively. There were significantly increased in breakfast frequency, walking steps, and meal eating period, but decreased in snacks and eating out in exercise group.

  • Since conventional methods for measuring stride length(distance) are many weaknesses, optical methods have been developed to measure stride length(distance) of human pedestrians. IR(Infrared) elements and Power LED(Light Emitting Diode) with two types of lens were used to correlate detected light intensity with stride length(distance). The suggested methods in this study are simple, convenient, and cost effective. The results can be used to analyze walking patterns of normal and disabled men, and to monitor the recovering processes of the disabled patients.

  • In this study, the human gait trajectories during normal walking were synthesized using the inverse kinematics and optimization techniques. The synthesis is based on a gait model consisting of a torso and two legs. Each let has three segments: thigh, shank, foot, and has six degrees-of-freedom. In order to synthesize trajectories of this redundant system, the sum of angular displacements of articulating joints was selected as an objective function to be minimized. The proposed algorithm in this study is very useful for the analysis of human gait. For the gait analysis, the trajectories of four points in each leg should be measured. Hpwever, by using the algorithm, measuring the trajectories of two points is sufficient, and thus the experimental set-up can be simplified.

  • In patients with cerebral palsy, dental treatments, which require absolute patient's corporation, have many difficulties because of muscle spacity, involuntary muscle movements and spasm. Especially in endodontic treatments which very meticulous instrumentation is needed, these muscle discordances may lead to unexpected accidents such as tissue damage while filing, over-instrumentation and swallowing instruments. Also, taking radiographs for measuring canal length is often hindered by walking and movement disorders. This paper is to present a clinical case of one-visit root canal treatment using electrical apex locator under general anesthesia in a cerebral palsy patient.

  • This paper describes the detection of spatio-temporal parameter using an accelerometer and footswitches to evaluate a symmetry and balance of hemiplegic patients. We detected gait data using a 3-axis accelerometer that mounted between L3 and IA intervertebral area and footswitches made by FSR-Sensor attached insole. To minimize the error of the gait parameters to be detected incorrectly in case of using only accelerometer, we enhancement the performance of detection by measuring an accelerometer and foots witches data at the same time. So, it was possible to detect more accurate gait parameters. As a result, we can confirm the symmetry and balance of hemiplegic patients. In the future. these results could be used to evaluate the walking ability in hemiplegic patients in clinical pratice.

  • This paper presents an electromagnetic kinetic energy harvester which is suitable for supplying power for body-worn sensors and personal electric devices. Human motions are investigated by measuring the acceleration signal at each points of the body during walking and running. The dynamic characteristics of the harvester can be calculated from the transfer function of the system. The transduction factor can be calculated from the electromagnetic field analysis by Maxwell software. The prototype of the harvester is designed and manufactured. The theoretical power characteristics are compared with the experiment results.

  • Foot, as a supporting base of human body, Is very important and has essential role during standing and walking those are our everyday physical movements. So lots of researches about the foot have been done for clinical purpose and ergonomic needs. Most of those researches are related to pressure distribution between the soles of the feet. Usually force plate or pressure sensor is used to obtain proper characteristic data from foot. But these expensive devices are not easy to attach to the sole of the subjects and it is unnatural for the subject to move with these devices. As one of method of measuring foot, gridded sole image is used. But the obtained image is very hard to be recognizable because of the image is composed with the ...
