An Analysis of Elementary Students' Selection of Representable Value and Confident Method That Appear in Measuring Activities (측정과 관련된 실험 활동에서 보이는 초등학생의 대푯값 선정 및 신뢰 방법 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the elementary students' selection of representable value and confident method that appear in measuring activities by using a microgenetic method. The participants were seven elementary students in the fourth grade. They performed the same measuring activities six times for the study period. Data were collected by interview and observation with their activity recording papers and video tape transcription. Their activities were recorded and documented for the analysis. Results were as follows. First, in the time measuring activity, elementary students developed desirably as their measuring experience increased, for example they selected a representable value in use of a repeated measurement and used a various method in the domain of a time measurement and they showed an increase of a quantitative observation in the volume domain except in the length domain. Second, in a confident method of a representable value, though they must rely upon a repeated measurement, they only measure repeatedly in the time domain. Also in the time domain, it doesn't get accomplished a exact confidence of a representable value at a shortage of skill about a measurement. Accordingly this study will be implications for teachers to teach a handling abilities of measuring instruments to elementary students and to be promote understanding a nature of measurement.

Total quality management Activities Evaluation (TAE) Model by the traditional scoring system and the efficiency measuring system (품질경영활동의 효율성을 고려한 평가모형)

  • To evaluate the total quality activities is the most fundamental and critical process as one of the PDCA cycle. The quality award criteria such as Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and Deming Award can be a, pp.ied to the guideline for evaluating quality activities. We can identify several important factors for TQM by referring quality award criteria, but they don't suggest how efficiently implement TQM. In this paper, two methodologies are a, pp.ied to evaluate the TQM activities comparatively. One of them is the traditional scoring system (TSS) by analytic hierarchy process (AHP). TSS is the system which evaluates the performance of TQM by the weighted sum of critical success factors. Several quality award system are typical examples of TSS. The other is the efficiency measuring system (EMS) by data envelop analysis (DEA). DEA outperformed other alternative methods to measure the efficiency and it can be a, pp.ied to evaluate the TQM activities. The evaluation system by DEA can be named as EMS. The objective of this paper is to suggest a model called TAE (Total quality management Activities Evaluation), for evaluating TQM activities. In this model TQM organizations are classified into four types by considering TSS and EMS. Those types are high weighted sum and high efficiency type, high weighted sum and low efficiency type, low weighted sum and high efficiency type, and low weighted sum and low efficiency type. Therefore TQM organizations must not only make efforts to get the higher scores in terms of TSS, but also take necessary steps to enhance their efficiencies.

  • Background : Evaluation of patient's satisfaction is one of the most important aspects of quality improvement. If the patient highly satisfies with the medical service provided in the hospital, he/she will be likely to visit the same hospital again. Patient's satisfaction of a particular hospital is directly correlated with hospital profits as well as reputation in the community. For this reason, various kinds of survey measuring satisfaction level have been performed and many kind of QI activities for enhancing the profits as well as reputation in the community. For this reason, various kinds of survey measuring satisfaction level have been performed and many kind of QI activities for enhancing the patient's satisfaction. This study is to find the effect of hospital QI activities on the patent's satisfaction level. Methods: After questionnares were developed, survey of measuring satisfaction level was performed in August, 1998. On the basis of survey results, QI activities were carried out to attain the target point of 4.0 and subsequent survey was done in November, 1998. Results: With three main principles of "problem solving approach with kindness". "helping patient to participate in medical procedure with sufficient information", and "putting employees into practice of attitude with human respect", the average level of satisfaction was enhanced from 3.45 to 3.55 level. Also kindness level of employees was increased from 3.71 to 3.82. Level of dissatisfaction about insufficient explanation and unkind attitude was dropped from 69% to 48% and from 82% to 46% respectively. Conclusion: With the result of this study overall satisfaction level was enhanced. In order to keep these advantages a operation of Quality Improvement Task Force Team in each subject will be required.

Development of an In Vitro Test System Measuring Transcriptional Downregulatory Activities on IL-13

  • Interleukin-13 (IL-13) has been proposed as a therapeutic target for bronchial asthma as it plays crucial roles in the pathogenesis of the disease. We developed an in vitro test system measuring transcriptional downregulatory activities on IL-13 as a primary screening method to select drug candidates from natural products. The promoter region of IL-13 (-2,048 to +1) was cloned into the upstream of a luciferase gene in the plasmid pGL4.14 containing the hygromycin resistance gene as a selection marker, generating pGL4.14-IL-13. The EL-4 thymoma and RBL-2H3 mast cells transiently expressing this plasmid highly produced the luciferase activities by responding to PI (PMA and ionomycin) stimulation up to 8-fold and 13-fold compared with the control, respectively, whereas cyclosporin A, a well-known antiasthmatic agent, significantly downregulated the activities. The BF1 clone of RBL-2H3 cells constitutively expressing pGL4.14-IL-13 was established by selecting surviving cells under a constant lethal dose of hygromycin treatment. The feasibility of this system was evaluated by measuring the downregulatory activities of 354 natural products on the IL-13 promoter using the BF1 clone. An extract from Morus bombycis (named TBRC 156) significantly inhibited PI-induced luciferase activities and IL-13 mRNA expression, but not the protein expression. Fisetin (named TBRC 353) inhibited not only PI-induced luciferase activities and mRNA expression, but also the IL-13 protein secretion, whereas myricetin (named TBRC 354) could not suppress the IL-13 expression at all. Our data indicated that this in vitro test system is able to discriminate the effects on IL-13 expression, and furthermore, that it might be suitable as a simple and time-saving primary screening system to select antiasthmatic agents by measuring transcriptional activities of the IL-13 promoter.

  • The concept and measuring activities of the height of figures are essential to find the areas or volumes of the corresponding figures. For plane figures, the height of a triangle is defined to be the line segment from a vertex that is perpendicular to the opposite side of the triangle, whereas the height of a parallelogram(trapezoid) is defined to be the distance between two parallel sides. For the solid figures, the height of a prism is defined to be the distance of two parallel bases, whereas the height of a pyramid is defined to be the perpendicular distance from the apex to the base. In addition, the height of a cone is defined to be the length of the line segment from the apex that is perpendicular to the base and the height of a cylinder is defined to be the length of the line segment that is perpendicular to two parallel bases. In this study, we discuss some pedagogical problems on the concepts and measuring activities of the height of figures to provide alternative activities and suggest their educational implications from a teaching and learning point of view.

An Application of Total Quality Management Efficiency Model in the Korean Distribution Industry

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the efficiency of the service quality activity itself by using the DEA Model, in contrast to previous quality evaluation methods, as an attempt to evaluate the service quality activities of the distribution industry. Furthermore, by complementing the shortfalls of the weighted value of the DEA Model, it recommends a DEA/PS Model that is appropriate in the evaluation of service quality activities. Based on this model, the study proposes the SQAE Model, an evaluation tool to complement the traditional measuring method. According to the results of the analysis of 18 sample distribution businesses, there was a discrepancy by business in the results of the Traditional Scoring System and the Evaluation Measuring System. Therefore, it is most desirable to not only be active in service quality activities but also increase efficiency at the same time.

  • In this paper, we analyzed two methodologies to evaluate the total quality management activities comparatively. One of them is the traditional scoring system (TSS) by analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the other is the efficiency measuring system (EMS) by data envelop analysis (DEA). It is demonstrated that the index by TSS and the efficiency index by EMS are not correlated. Also, the efficiency index by EMS in terms of company characteristics such as the size of company and ISO certifications is different from the index by TSS. The result implies that to evaluate the quality activities by EMS is needed as a supplementary methodology.

Preparation of Heparinoids from Acidic Plant Polysaccharides (식물성 산성당으로부터 헤파리노이드의 제조)

  • Anticoagulant activities were tested for the fifteen kinds of medicinal plants by measuring activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). Of them five kinds or species (Artemisia princeps, Sanguisorba officinalis, Artemisia apiacea, Eclipa alba, Schizonepeta tenuifolia) were selected and fractionated for the preparation of acidic polysaccharides. They were extracted with water by refluxing and the extracts were precipitated with ethanol. The precipitates were separated based on charge using a DEAE-Sephadex. The low salt and high salt fractions were sulfated with anhydrous pyridine and chlorosulfonic acid complex. In vitro anticoagulant activities of sulfated polysaccharides were tested by measuring aPTT, prothrombin time (PT), and factor Xa clotting time using normal human plasma. No relationship was found between the amount of uronic acids and anticoagulant activities, but the sulfated ones show the increase of activities. In vivo anticoagulant properties of the sulfated polysaccharide from Artemisia apiacea were also tested by the intraveneous administration of three different doses (3,5 and 10 mg/kg) to rats. APTT and PT were increased significantly and the action of factor Xa and thrombin mediated through antithrombin III were inhibited slightly.

  • A coordinate measuring machine (CMM) is a computer-controlled measuring device that uses a probe to obtain measurements on a manufactured part's surface. CMM's have been very popular over traditional hard gauges due to their flexibility, accuracy, and ease of automated inspection. This paper considers the use of a CMM for the inspection of gears. We compare the inspection capability of a CMM and that of a gear-specific measuring machine. The result of this paper may benefit gear manufacturing companies in their dimensional quality assurance activities, especially for special type gears and for large-scale gears which are not measurable by gear-specific measuring machines.

  • Thirty species of Korean medicinal plants which have been frequently used in Oriental herb prescriptions were evaluated on their acute toxicity and potential antitumor activities against P-388 lymphocytic leukemia. The criteria for toxicity evaluation of measuring weight loss, toxicity day survivors and computing log cell kill indicated that 11 species possessed acute toxicity according to the doses administered. No significant antitumor activities were observed while the root of Angelica gigas Nakai (Umbelliferae) exhibited only 24% increased life span.
