  • This study was conducted laboratory flume tests to identify landslide features and flow characteristics of debris using a flume test equipment. Under the several test conditions dependent on rainfall intensity and slope angle, the authors measured pore water pressure, slope failure and displacement, spreading area of debris on a regular time interval. The test processes were also recorded by video cameras and digital still cameras. According to the test results, pore water pressures have trends of direct proportion to the rainfall intensity and the slope angle, resulting in high potential of landslide triggering. The spreading area of debris is also increased with the slope angle and the rainfall intensity as well as the rainfall duration.

  • Lineaments in the Kyungsang basin most intensely develop in the East coast domain including the Yangsan fault, which dominantly run in NNE direction. The geometry of small fault population near or along the Yangsan fault represents the dominant strikes of N35E, high angle dips and shallowly plunging rakes with dextral movement sense. Stereographic solution on the Yangsan fault geometry gives the dip of 88SE, the slip direction of 17,024 and the slip rake of 18, which were determined from the strike (N23E) of the fault measured on map, and the average attitude (N35E, 84SE) and fault striation (16, 037) of small fault population considered as Riedel shears. It is judged from the geometry of small fault population to the main Yangsan fault and dragging features of bedding attitude near the fault that the Yangsan fault was produced from dextrally strike-slip movement. The movement of the Yangsan and the adjacent parallel faults is thought to be taken place much later than the other fault sets in the Kyungsang basin. It might occur during the geologic age from Eocence to early Miocene according to the consideration of K-Ar ages of the igneous rocks near the fault. The estimated paleostress state indicates ENE shortening and NNW extension. The displacement of the Yangsan fault in the study area is not constant along the fault but decreases from the south to the north. Taking the northern end of the study area as a separating point the whole extension of the Yangsan fault may be divided into southern and northern segments.

  • The precast production has many advantages by fast construction period, labor-saving and high quality. In recent years, the application of the precast product has been increased in the earth retaining wall field. This paper presents the results of the numerical analysis that was carried out to evaluate the dynamic stability of precast and prestressed earth retaining wall under moving train load. The two-dimensional FEM analysis was used to the numerical analyses. The train load to act on trackbed is combined by the real measured roughness phase angle and quasi-static load. The dynamic stability is analysed by the displacement, acceleration and stress under moving train load at each specified location. The results of the analysis show that the precast and prestressed retaining wall has very stable capability for the railway.

  • The response of a bridge can be influenced by span length, bridge's surface condition, vehicle's weight, and vehicle's velocity. It is difficult to predict accurate behavior of a bridge. In the current standard of specifications, such dynamic effect is defined by impact factor and prescribed to consider live load as to increase design load by means of multiplying this value by live load. However, it is not well understood because the Impact factor method differs from every country. Dynamic, static and pseudo-staitic field loading tests on PSC-I girder bridges were carried out to find out the dynamic property of the bridge. This paper is aimed to figure out actual dynamic property of the bridge by using field loading test. An empirical method based on impact factor is widely used and also argued. Displacement and strain response measured from the tests was compared with one from the empirical method. The former seems to be reasonable since it can consider actual response of a bridge through field tests.

  • The purpose of the present study is to determine the effect of Jakyakgamchotang on histamine or acetylcholine induced tracheal smooth muscle contraction in rats and guinea pigs. Guinea pig(500g, male) and Sprague Dawley rats(250g, male) were killed by $CO_2$ exposure and a segment (4-5mm) of the thoracic trachea from each rat and guinea pig was cut into equal segments and mounted 'in pairs' in a tissue bath. Contractile force was measured with force displacement transducers under 0.5g loading tension. The dose of histamine(His) which evoked 50% of maximal response($ED_{50}$) was obtained from cumulative dose response curves for histamine($10^{-7}{\sim}10^{-4}M$). Contractions evoked by His($ED_{50}$) were inhibited significantly by Jakyakgamchotang. In guinea pig tracheal smooth muscle, the mean percent inhibition of histamine induced contraction was 90.8% (p〈0.001) after $100{\mu}l/ml$ Jakyakgamchotang. In rat tracheal smooth muscle, the mean percent inhibition of acetylcholine induced contraction was 22.1% (p〈0.05) after $100{\mu}l/ml$ Jakyakgamchotang. Propranolol indomethacin and methylene blue($10^{-7}M$) slightly but significantly attenuated the inhibitory effects of Jakyakgamchotang. These results indicate that Jakyakgamchotang can relax histamine or acetylcholine induced contraction of guinea pig and rat tracheal smooth muscle.

  • Three-dimensional continuum modeling of dynamic soil-pile-structure interaction embedded in a liquefiable sand was carried out. Finn model which can model liquefaction behavior using effective stress method was adopted to simulate development of pore water pressure according to shear deformation of soil directly in real time. Finn model was incorporated into Non-linear elastic, Mohr-Coulomb plastic model. Calibration of proposed modeling method was performed by comparing the results with those of the centrifuge tests performed by Wilson (1998). Excess pore pressure ratio, pile bending moment, pile head displacement-time history according to depth calculated by numerical analysis agreed reasonably well with the test results. Validation of the proposed modeling method was later performed using another test case, and good agreement between the computed and measured values was observed.

  • In this study, centrifuge model tests were fulfilled to investigate the characteristics of bearing capacity of paper ash as a filling material. The model tests were done varying the footing width and gravity level. The settlement and vertical soil pressure by loading were measured. The results from the tests were compared with the one from FLAC program using finite difference method and bearing capacity theory. After all, it was shown that the characteristics of load-settlement represented the local shear failure, which the settlement ratio s/B showed inflection point around 25~30%. As g-level and footing width were increasing, the load strength was increasing. The ultimate bearing capacity from the tests was very closed the results from Terzaghi's theory. As the distance from footing center was increasing, the vertical soil pressure was decreasing. If E/B is higher than 7, the stress by loading was almost increasing. The vertical displacement from loading was the largest one around under the footing and was almost occurred when the depth>4cm and E/B is higher than 5.0.

  • Soil nailing type of retaining structures has been widely used in Korea far the purpose of the temporary and permanent support in excavations and slope stability. The important factors in application of soil nailing systems in urban excavation site nearby the existing structures are the displacement of the wall and tensile farce of the nails, etc. In this paper, the fled back analyses are carried out at 11 excavation sites to investigate the behavior of tensile farce of nails at stepwise excavation in the multi-layered strata including various rock layers. The results of the fled back analysis are less than about 50% of the measured ones. The distance of active zone by measurements are shown almost larger than that of fled back analysis when the distance of active Bone is defined from the surface of wall to the potential failure surface. And the results of fled back analysis are within the range proposed by the project CLOUTERRE and Cartier & Gigan (1983) which were 0.3$H_f$, and 0.5$H_f$, of the final excavation depth ($H_f$,) respectively, but the values of the measurement were larger than these values.

  • Objective: This study was prepared to figure out a certain dimension and morphology of the condyle at the central, medial and lateral aspects on MR images of asymptomatic volunteers, which could be comparable with those of the TMD patients' condyle. Materials: Sixty TMJs from 30 asymptomatic volunteers(15 male, 15 female) who had no clinical symptoms and no disc displacement on sagital and coronal view of MRI were served as normal. Method: MR images were taken from the asymptomatic volunteers and the dimension of the anteroposterior length, mediolateral width, height, convexities were measured through the images on the sagittal and coronal sections of mandibular condyle. Then, these data were collected and analyzed. Result: The mean value of anteroposterior length was $8.00{\pm}1.21mm$ at central section and mediolateral length was $21.40{\pm}2.32mm$ on coronal view. The anterior condylar length at medial side was the shortest and the convexity of anterior slop at the lateral side was proved to be the flattest among 3 sections. There were little dimensional and morphological differences at sagittal sections, but the mediolateral width of condyle at coronal section was significantly different between male and female. Conclusion: In sagittal sections, the anterior condyle length was shortest at medial side and the convexity of anterior slop was flattest at lateral side, and there were little dimensional and morphologic differences between male and female. In coronal section, male's condyle was more wider and flatter than female's.

  • Real-time hybrid testing (RTHT) involves virtual splitting of the structure into two parts: physical substructure that contains the key region of interest which is tested in a laboratory and numerical substructure that contains the remaining part of the structure in the form of a numerical model. This paper numerically assesses four step-by-step integration methods (Central difference method (CDM), Operator splitting method (OSM), Rosenbrock based method (RBM) and CR-integration method (CR)) which are widely used in RTHT. The methods have been assessed in terms of stability and accuracy for various realistic damping ratios of the physical substructure. The stability is assessed in terms of the spectral radii of the amplification matrix while the accuracy in terms of numerical damping and period distortion. In order to evaluate the performance of the methods, five carefully chosen examples have been studied - undamped SDOF, damped SDOF, instantaneous softening, instantaneous hardening and hysteretic system. The performance of the methods is measured in terms of a non-dimensional error index for displacement and velocity. Based on the error indices, it is observed that OSM and RBM are robust and performs fairly well in all the cases. CDM performed well for undamped SDOF system. CR method can be used for the system showing softening behaviour. The error indices indicate that accuracy of OSM is more than other method in case of hysteretic system. The accuracy of the results obtained through time integration methods for different damping ratios of the physical substructure is addressed in the present study. In the presence of a number of integration methods, it is preferable to have criteria for the selection of the time integration scheme. As such criteria are not available presently, this paper attempts to fill this gap by numerically assessing the four commonly used step-by-step methods.
