  • The finite element model based on the 2-D advection-dispersion equation incorporating the dispersion tensor that is calculated using velocity field data was developed in order to analyze more accurately 2-D mixing of pollutants for meandering streams. The proposed model was tested using the straight channel that inclined at 45o in the Cartesian coordinate system. The simulation results showed that dispersion tensor model using velocity field data gives an accurate solution. The suitability of the proposed model in analyzing actual pollutant mixing in meandering channels was demonstrated by comparing the simulation results with experimental data obtained from the tracer tests in the laboratory flume. Comparison results showed that the proposed model with dispersion tensor can represents more accurately the mixing phenomena of the pollutants in the meandering channels in which the direction of the primary flow is varying periodically along the channel.

  • In this study, we investigated the grain size, lithological type, and shape of coarse bed materials in the upper and middle reaches of Gongneungcheon River. For this purpose, 11 sampling points were selected along the river. For 100 samples of the coarse bed materials at each point, three axes (long, intermediate, and short) of samples were measured, and their lithological types were also identified. By measuring grain size, the sphericity and flatness of samples were calculated. Finally, every particle was classified into four shape categories: sphere, disc, blade and rod. We found that the grain size in incised meandering reach is the largest. This is mainly due to the supply of coarse materials from steep valley sides along the meandering channel. According to the lithological analysis, all samples were identified as granite, gneiss and schist, and quartz. The proportion of granite decreased, whereas the proportion of gneiss and schist increased downstream. These patterns indicate that the bedrock distribution within the study area accounts for the downstream lithological variation of coarse bed materials. With regard to the grain shape, sphericity gradually decreased while flatness gradually increased downstream. In the case of the shape classification, unlike the general downstream pattern of grain shape, the proportion of the sphere type decreased and the proportion of the blade type increased downstream. Such a reversal change in the downstream direction turns out to be determined by the lithology (such as foliation, bedding and the pattern of weathering) of coarse bed materials.

  • Field experiment was performed from June 2010 to July 2011 to evaluate pollutants removal efficiency in the constructed wetland system for the treated wastewater and the river water. The wetland systems were constructed near Gyungan river. Two different systems with meandering shape were compared for seasonal base and operational period base. Several kinds of aquaculture are planted through the corridor of wetland system. Average removal rate of BOD, T-N and T-P for A system were 15.8%, 14.8% and 26.5%, respectively. Average removal rate of BOD, T-N and T-P for C system were 23.5%, 27.8% and 10.6%, respectively. The effluent from two wetland systems often exceeded effluent water quality standards for wastewater influent, however effluent water quality standards for river water. However, the wetland system can be useful to treat polluted river water and effluent from wastewater plant. Removal rate of pollutants in seasonal variation was the highest in summer for BOD and T-N, however the removal rates of T-P were higher in spring and autumn than in summer.

  • This paper attempted to analyze the hydraulic effects that the dredging can take as an alternative to reduce possible damages of flooding due to the overflow of river levee in meandering rivers, where riverbed aggradation, seepage and erosion may occur. In order to make a hydraulic analysis in a section of meandering rivers, a two-dimensional hydraulic analysis model, RMA-2, was selected. The GIS was applied to construct two-dimensional finite element grids to consider the hydraulic conditions before and after dredging. The water surface elevations, depths, velocities, and tractive forces were compared before and after the dredging. The difference of water surface elevation between the inside and outside of river was turned out to be the maximum value of 0.58m under the design flood condition. It could be evaluated that the tractive force at the bank decreased about 42 to 67% on average for all the sections. These results could give valuable information that the dredging of the stream channel at the meandering sections decreased the risk of overflow, seepage and erosion of the banks. The methodologies given in this study will contribute to mitigating the flood damages in the surrounding farmlands.

  • The levee protect lifes, houses, and properties by blocking overflow of river. The revetment is forced to be covered on the slope of levee in order to prevent erosion. The stability of revetment is very important enough to directly connected to the stability of levee. In this study, the weak points of revetment on meandering channel were found by movable revetment experiment and the velocity and the water surface elevation (WSE) were measured at main points. The 3-D numerical simulations were performed under same conditions with experiment. And unclear flow characteristics by the limit of measuring instruments were analyzed through numerical simulation. Consequently, the section of large wall shear stress and the failure section are almost the same. Despite of small wall shear stress, the revetments located at right bank were carried away because of circulation zone due to secondary flow by meandering. With existing riprap design formula, the sizes of riprap determined using maximum local velocity were 1.5~4.7 times greater than them using mean velocity. As a result of this study, it is necessary to calculate the size of riprap in other ways for meandering and straight channel. At a later study, if the weighted value considered the radius of curvature and shape of hydraulic structure is applied to riprap design formula, it is expected that the size of revetment was evaluated rationally and accurately.

  • Tsushima Warm Current(WD entering into the East Sea through the Korean Strait flows northeastward and during this travel it shows complicated movement like meandering and eddy. It is considered that these variations of TWC are important causes making water masses unstable and also have influence on biological and chemical properties of water masses. Lee and Cho(2000) suggested that meandering of TWC in adjacent waters of Noto peninsula has much influence on fluctuation of current structure. (omitted)

  • In this study, flow characteristics and bed changes during a short term flood event were analyzed using the two-dimensional CCHE2D model for a meandering sand-bed river, the Naesung Stream. Flow and bed change simulation was carried along the three sub-reaches with sinuosity of 1.2, 1.6 and 2.2 for the 6-day flood event occurring in June 2011. The simulation results indicated that velocity variation due to flow concentration was larger along the sub-reach with the sinuosity less than 1.5 and bed erosion at the outside of the bend was increased by time. In the sub-reach with the sinuosity less than 1.5, the maximum flood discharge produced the maximum flow velocity over 1.6 m/s to 2 m/s locally.

  • A computer model was proposed to simulate channel changes and bed material sorting of the meandering channels with different grain size in time and space simultaneously. The bed at the outside of the meandering channel with mixed sediments was scoured deeply and composed of coarser materials, and at the inside was aggradated and composed of finer materials. The sorting process started at the upstream inflection point and was finished at the downstream inflection point. At the natural with complicated boundaries and non-uniform grain sizes, the bed near the outside at the bend and narrow width was scoured deeper with coarse materials than in the channel with uniform grain sizes. The point bars showed lip at the inside near the bend and the bed materials were finer The bed at the outside near the bend and in the narrow width was scoured deeply with the coarser materials.
