Generally, component and FR-4 board are connected by solder joint. Because material properties of components and FR-4 board are different, component and FR-4 board show different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) and thus strains in component and board are different when they are heated. That is, the differences in CTE of component and FR-4 board cause the dissimilarity in shear strain and BGA solder joint s failure. The first order Taylor series expansion of the limit state function incorporating with thermal fatigue models is used in order to estimate the failure probability of solder joints under heated condition. A model based on plastic-strain rate such as the Coffin-Manson Fatigue Model is utilized in this study. The effects of random variables such as frequency, maximum temperature, and temperature variations on the failure probability of the BGA solder joint are systematically investigated by using a failure probability model with the first order reliability method(FORM).

The bond performance of prestressing strands is still not well understood and is still in controversy on the validity of the test results up to today, although it is a basic information to desing the prestressed pretensioned concrete beams. Different transfer length has been found for a product of the same company, but of the different production methods and factories in the United States. It is necessary to determine optimum transfer bond length of the domestic stands because the ultimate flexural and shear capacity in a section of prestressed concrete beams are evaluated under the assumption that the anchorage bond failure shall not happen. The transfer lenght of low-relaxation, Gr 270, and 1/2" seven-wire prestressing strands from four domestic companies will be evaluated by the concrete strain method. The recent concept of the 95% Maximum Average Strain Method suggested by Russel et al. will be considered to obtain the transfer length of domestic strands. It will be also evaluated if the domestic strands are conform to ACI 318-95.8-95.

In this work, we deal with the feasibility of structural topology optimization for beam designs using retrofits that optimally allocates the reinforcement to the web under the condition that designers set bolt regions for H-beams of different dimensions. Mean compliance or minimal strain energy is considered for the optimization. Volume fraction is given to the design space to assign appropriate steel material quantities. The purpose of this study is to evaluate optimal shapes of stiffeners with the maximum rigidity that improves the axial and shear performance of the H-beam and to satisfy a given safety design standard of H-beam and stiffeners in case arbitrary load effect and resistances. Finally, the effectiveness of stiffness-based topology optimization on stiffeners is verified with several practical applicable examples.

Decomposed granite soils are in a wide range of conditions depending on the degrees of weathering. This paper is intended to examine laboratory tests such as consolidation tests and conventional triaxial compression tests conducted in order to find out the mechanical properties of Cheongju granite soil. Along with the foregoing, the results of basic physical tests conducted in order to grasp the physical properties of Cheongju granite soil were described and based on the results, methods to calculate the mechanical parameters of numerical approaches using Lade's double surface work-hardening constitutive model were examined. Finally, it is intended to explain the stress properties of Cheongju granite soil used as a geotechnical material based on its shear behavior and critical state concept using the results of isotropic consolidation tests and triaxial compression tests. As a conclusion, it can be seen that in the relationship between confining stress and maximum deviator stress, the slope is maintained at a constant value of 2.95. In the drained CTC test, maximum deviator stress generally existed in a range of axial strain of 6~8% and larger dilatancy phenomena appeared when confining stress was smaller. Finally, based on the results of the CTC tests on Cheongju granite soil, although axial strain, deviator stress and pore water pressure showed mechanical properties similar to those of overconsolidated soil, Cheongju granite soil showed behavior similar to that of normally consolidated soil in terms of volumetric strain.
It is important to evaluate the stiffness characteristics of compacted subgrade soil under track that is loaded dynamically. Using a mid-size Resonant Column test apparatus, normalized shear modulus and shear modulus variation with changing of confining pressure were investigated with change of degree of saturation (DOS). From an analysis of the test results, it was verified that the maximum shear modulus decreased with increases of DOS. However, normalized shear modulus increased with increases of DOS. Using the test results, a relation of G~${\gamma}$~DOS can be constructed and characterized. In the future, by performing tests with soils used as trackbed broadly in the field, a prediction model for DOS~G~${\gamma}$ can be proposed.

Pressuremeter test estimates deformational properties of soil from the relationship between applied pressure and the displacement of cavity wall, and the results reflect the in-situ stress condition and the structure of soil particles. This study suggests the overall process of test and analysis for the evaluation of nonlinear degradation characteristics of shear moduli, based on the reloading curve of pressuremeter test. The method estimates the maximum shear modulus, taking into account the difference between the stress states around the probe in reloading and that of the in-situ state, and then combines the degradation characteristics of shear moduli taken from reloading curve. This procedure derives the shear moduli in overall strain range. Pressuremeter tests were carried out in various ground conditions using large calibration chamber, together with various reference tests. Shear moduli taken from pressuremeter tests were compared with bender element test and resonant column test results.
Most of high carbon fly ashes (HCFA) are discarded in landfills with high costs due to low recycling rate. This study aims to explore the geotechnical behaviors of HCFA mixtures reinforced with fiber and sand. A series of compaction test, unconfined compressive strength test and modified 1D consolidation test with bender element were performed. Specimens were prepared at their optimal moisture contents based on the results of compaction tests. The results of this study demonstrate that the inclusion of fibers to the matrix of HCFA increases unconfined compressive strength (UCS), strain at UCS, and maximum shear modulus ($G_{max}$) at a given void ratio. Reinforcement with sand increases UCS of HCFA; while the strain at UCS is irrelevant with sand fractions. Sand particles may disrupt the direct contacts between HCFA particles at low sand content, resulting in a decrease in $G_{max}$. However, it can be expected that the mixtures with sand content larger than 20% are in dense state; thus, $G_{max}$ of HCFA reinforced with sand shows greater value than that of unreinforced HCFA compacted with the same energy. Regardless of types of reinforcement, the compression index ($C_c$) of both fiber and sand reinforced HCFA is mainly determined by initial void ratio.
PURPOSES: Suggestion of asphalt binder constitutive model based on time-temperature superposition principle and overstress concept in order to describe behavior of asphalt binders. METHODS: A series of temperature sweep tests and multiple stress creep and recovery(MSCR) tests are performed to verify the applicability of time-temperature superposition principle(t-Ts) and to develop viscoelastoplastic constitutive equation based on overstress concept. For the tests, temperature sweep tests at various high temperature and various frequency and MSCR test at $58^{\circ}C$, $64^{\circ}C$$70^{\circ}C$, $76^{\circ}C$, and $82^{\circ}C$ are performed. From the temperature sweep tests, dynamic shear modulus mastercurve and time-temperature shift function are built and the shift function and MSCR at $58^{\circ}C$ are utilized to determine model coefficients of VBO model. RESULTS: It is observed that the time-temperature shift function built at low strain level of 0.1% is applicable not only to 1.0% strain level temperature sweep test but also maximum 500,00% strain level of MSCR test. As well, the modified VBO model shows perfect prediction on MSCR measured strain at the other temperatures. CONCLUSIONS: The Time-temperature superposition principle stands hold from very low strain level to very high strain level and that the modified VBO model can be applicable for various range of strain and temperature region to predict elastic, viscoelastic, and viscoplastic strain of asphalt binders.
The effects of dissolved oxy-gen(DO) concentration and DO control modes on cell growth in a 4L computer-controlled bioreactor system were investigated using Phellinus linteus WI-001, a producer of protein-polysaccharides having potent anticancer activi-ties. When DO was controlled at about 20%, maximum cell concentration and specific growth rate of the strain were observed to increase 36% and 64%, respectively, as compared to the experiment performed without DO control. By adopting cascade automatic control of DO ar 20% in a mixed automatic control mode using computer-con-trolled program, 19.5g/L of maximum cell concentration was obtained. These results showed that the mixed auto-matic control mode was the effective method for enhancing cell growth of the shear sensitive Phellinus linteus.

LNG cargo containment system (CCS) has the primary function of ensuring adequate thermal insulation with keeping natural gas below its boiling point. From the viewpoint of structural design, this LNG CCS can be treated as a laminated composite structure showing complex structural responses under the sloshing load which can be defined as a violent behavior of the liquid contents in cargo tanks due to external forced motions. As LNG CCS type, Mark III containment system from TGZ is considered in this paper and then its structural strength assessment is performed based on a simple higher-order shear deformation theory and maximum stress, maximum strain, Tsai-Wu failure criteria developed for laminated composite plates. The assessment is performed to the initial failure of the Mark III CS plate by investigating failure locations and loads.
