  • Denitrification is one of the important processes of removing nitrate from in recirculating aquaculture systems. And this process is affected by many factors such as external organic carbon sources, hydraulic retention time (HRT), COD/NO3--N (C:N) ratio, etc. However, not many studies were done for the optimum conditions of denitrification in the recirculation system for aquaculture. Therefore, this study was conducted to find out the optimum removal condition of NO3--N using submerged denitrification biofilter. The combinations of two external organic carbon sources (glucose and methanol), two HRT (4 and 8-hour) and four differnent C : N ratios (3, 4, 5, 6) were tested. The removal efficiencies of NO3--N and total inorganic nitrogen (TIM) at 8-hour HRT were better than those at 4-hour's (P<0.05). The maximum removal efficiency of NO3--N by methanol (97.8%) was achieved at HRT and C : N ratio were 8-hour and 4.0 respectively. The efficiencies of methanol for the removal of NO3--N and TIN were always better than those of glucose (P<0.05). The maximum removal efficiencies of total inorgainc nitrogen (TIN) were gained at C : N ration of 5.0. The maximum removel efficiencies of TIN using methanol and glucose were 96.9% and 71.5% respectively. Anaerobic condition which is necessary for denitrification process was not made until the 8-hour HRT and higher C : N ratio (5.0). Removal of NO3--N at 4-hour HRT and C : N ration lower than 5.0 were inhibited by oxygen and/or low quantity of external organic carbon. Removal efficiencies of NO3--N were also inhibited by high C : N (6.0) ratio when HRT was 8-hour.

  • Before applying PVA bio-beads to practical biological treatment of nitrate-containing wastewater, their characteristics were examined. PVA bio-beads could steadily produce nitrogen gas from nitrate for 28 batches with 0.04 ml/l/h of the maximum gas production rate; however, the maximum gas production rate dropped remarkably thereafter with apparent deformation of beads. Addition of 2.2% solution containing 1% casamino acid, 1% yeast extract, 0.1% mineral solution, and 0.1% vitamin solution to the culture medium resulted in not only recovery of activity of deactivated beads, but also a higher rate of gas production. Calculation of economic benefit for the use of bio-beads in a long-run operation indicated that reactivation of bio-beads by chemicals had economical advantages over packing new bio-beads in the system. The continuously stirred bioreactor exhibited a satisfactory performance at HRT of 20.0 h. With a 9.5 mg $NO_{3}^{-}N/l/h$ nitrate removal rate, nitrate could completely be removed without nitrite accumulation. The use of PVA bio-beads in nitrate removal appears very promising.

  • This study evaluated the photocatalytic oxidation of BPA using the RPOD reactor under various conditions. This study found that the RPOD was effective for BPA degradation. It could reduce 1 mg/L of BPA by half within 5 min under the optimum conditions. According to the study results, $TiO_2$ coating was important for the BPA oxidation. As the coating thickness increased, the removal efficiency improved. The light source, the light intensity and the drum rotating speed were important for the oxidation. The UV light was more effective for the BPA degradation than the visible light. The removal efficiency improved with increasing intensity. As the drum speed increased, the removal efficiency improved. The maximum speed was 240 rpm in this study. Addition of air and nitrogen was not beneficial for the BPA degradation in this study probably due to enough oxygen in the water.

  • Constructed wetland system which can be applied to the rural wastewater treatment system was examined by pilot plant in Kon-Kuk University. Hydraulic loading rate of wastewater was about 0.16m$^3$/m$^2$. day and theoretical detention time in the system was 1.38 days. The effluent of the septic tank for the school building was applied as inflow to the system. The influent concentration of DO was zero but effluent was up to 4.37mg/${\ell}$ which implies that oxygen was supplied enough from atmosphere by reaeration to support biological activity of the system. Average influent concentration of BOD was 104mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 24mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 76%. Average influent concentration of COD was 215mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 63mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 70 % . Average influent concentration of SS was 78mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 10mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 87%. Two components, BOD and SS, are regulated by law to keep maximum water quality standard of 80mg/${\ell}$ when daily outflow rate is less than 100$m^3$/day which is the case of most rural communities. Therefore, the results from the experiment showed that constructed wetland system can meet the water quality standard easily. Average influent concentration of total nitrogen was 165mg/lwhich is relatively higher than normal wastewater, and effluent was about 156mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of only 6%. Average influent concentration of total phosphorus was 41 mg/${\ell}$ and effluent was 6mg/${\ell}$ with average removal rate of 87%. Overall, constructed wetland system was thought to be effective to treat wastewater if nitrogen removal mechanism is improved. Considering low cost, less maintenance, and high treatability, this system can be a practical alternative for the wastewater treatment in rural area The experiment was performed during the summer and fall season, and treatment efficiency of the system is expected to decrease in low temperature. therefore, further study including temperature is required to evaluate feasibility of the system more in detail.

  • Lab-scale biofilter was evaluated for the removal of styrene from a waste gas stream. Compost and polyurethane form were used as packing material (50 : 50) and activated sludge from a wastewater treatment plant was innoculated initially. Nitrogen limitation was observed during the biofilter operation and nitrogen source should be properly supplemented. When ammonium sulfate is used as N-source. 200mg carbon was removed for each mg of nitrogen. The effects of the volumetric styrene loading on the styrene elimination capacity (EC) and the removal efficiency (RE) was also tested. The results showed $EC_{max}$ was 4.8kg $C/m^3{\cdot}day$ and above RE 95% was achieved at EBRT 1min.

  • The water quality in eutrophic lakes is affected by serious problems, such as abnormal increasing of Cyanobacteria. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of a modified flotation system using a hybrid technique formed by chemical compounds and an electrostatic bridge. Therefore, experiments using the hybrid technique were performed to measure the zeta potential value on the phytoplankton surface and the removal efficiencies of phytoplankton, ammonia nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen and phosphoric acid. The results were as follows: Firstly, the zeta potential of M.aeruginosa was observed to approach charge neutralization due to adhesion of magnesium hydroxide precipitate on the phytoplankton surface in the pH range 10.5 to 11. Secondly, the concentration of chlorophyll-a decreased from about 150 to 20${\mu}g$g/L, with a maximum removal efficiency of 84% due to coagulation with pH values higher than 10. Thirdly, the N$H_4$-N concentration was observed to decrease from 0.62 to 0.54mg-N/L (13%), and the P$O_4$-P concentration, which is a limiting factor to the formation of algae blooms, decreased from 0.27 to 0.02mg-P/L (92%). These findings suggest that the modified flotation system can be applied for the purification of the raw water of numerous lakes containing high phytoplankton populations and elevated pH.

  • In this study, the performance of new digestion system (NDS) for the treatment of food waste leachate was evaluated. The food waste leachate was fed intermittently to an anaerobic reactor at increasing steps of 3.3 L/day (hydraulic retention time [HRT] = 30 day), 5 L/day (HRT = 20 day), and finally 10 L/day (HRT = 10 day). In the anaerobic reactor, the pH and alkalinity were maintained at 7.6 to 8.2 and 8,940-14,400 mg/L, respectively. Maximum methane yield determined to be 0.686L $CH_4$/g volatile solids (VS) containing HRT over 20 day. In the digester, 102,328 mg chemical oxygen demand (COD)/L was removed to produce 350 L/day (70% of the total) of biogas, but in the digested sludge reduction (DSR) unit, only 3,471 mg COD/L was removed with a biogas production of 158 L/day. Without adding any chemicals, 25% of total nitrogen (TN) and 31% of total phosphorus (TP) were removed after the DSR, while only 48% of TN and 32% of TP were removed in the nitrogen, phosphorus, and heavy metals (NPHM) removal unit. Total removal of TN was 73% and total removal of TP was 63%.

  • Membrane process has been one of the widely applied wastewater treatment options, especially in field. However, one of the tricky issues in the process is to treat concentrates generated from reverse osmosis (RO) system in a manner of saving cost with maximum efficiency for treating a wide range of contaminants. Stimulated with the challenging issues, we have conducted a series of experimental studies in the evaluation for removing organics and nutrients using activated carbon. Results indicated that while powdered activated carbon (PAC) efficiently removed organics and the extent of removal was proportional to the PAC dosage, little removal of nitrogen and phosphorus was observed despite increasing the PAC dose. Interestingly, applying PAC was superior in removing organics than using granular activated carbon (GAC). These results suggest smaller particle size with higher surface area could provide greater chemical reactivity in removing organics.

  • Laboratory-scale membrane bioreactor added alum into the anaerobic basin as a flocculant and adsorbent was carried out to find removal efficient of nitrogen and phosphorus components in the mixed liquid and weather or not maintaining the stability for the permeate flux and pressure at various internal recycle conditions. It was found that denitrification efficient of maximum 65% was obtained when the ratio of internal recycle was 3Q. Additionally when the ratio of internal recycle was fixed at 3Q, $BOD_5$ and T-P concentration of permeate was much more reduced compared to not added alum in anaerobic basin but T-N concentration of permeate was relatively increased. In case of added alum as the flocculant and adsorbent in anaerobic basin, the permeate flux was maintained above $10{\ell}/m^2/hr$ but the permeate pressure was relatively higher than alum was not added in anaerobic basin.

  • We used phototrophic bacteria to remove low concentrated organic materials (CODCr), nitrogen and phosphorus. We applied $COD_{Cr}$ 37.3 mg/L, $NH_3-N$ 4.0 mg/L, and $PO_4^{3-}-P$ 1.0 mg/L (C:N:P=100:10:1) in the batch test, and the removal efficiencies were shown as follow: $COD_{Cr}$ 87.4%, $NH_3-N$ 46.3%, $PO_4^{3-}-P$ 79.7%. The aerobic process with mixed phototrophic bacteria, ceramic media, and media KSP01 showed the removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$, $NH_3-N$, and $PO_4^{3-}-P$, each as 72.7% and 79.2%, respectively in the lab-scale reactor. The maximum $PO_4^{3-}-P$ removal efficiency reached 92.6% by adjusting pH. There were three conditions used to remove $NH_3-N$. The highest removal efficiency was 98.5% with 10.2 L/min of aeration in 1-2 reactors, and the result of applying river-water showed the high removal efficiency of $NH_3-N$ (82.8%). Therefore, this purification system may be useful to control nitrogen and phosphorus at low concentration in field.
