Residual deformation is a crucial index that should be paid special attention in the performance-based seismic analyses of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Owing to their superior re-centering capacity under earthquake excitations, the post-tensioned self-centering (PTSC) RC frames have been proposed and developed for engineering application during the past few decades. This paper presents a comprehensive assessment on the seismic fragility of a PTSC frame by simultaneously considering maximum and residual deformations. Bivariate limit states are defined according to the pushover analyses for maximum deformations and empirical judgments for residual deformations. Incremental Dynamic Analyses (IDA) are conducted to derive the probability of exceeding predefined limit states at specific ground motion intensities. Seismic performance of the PTSC frame is compared with that of a conventional monolithic RC frame. The results show that, taking a synthetical consideration of maximum and residual deformations, the PTSC frame surpasses the monolithic frame in resisting most damage states, but is more vulnerable to ground motions with large intensities.

This paper presents a model of the elastic curve for rectangular beams with straight haunches under uniformly distributed load and moments in the ends considering the bending and shear deformations (Timoshenko Theory) to obtain the deflections and rotations on the beam, which is the main part of this research. The traditional model of the elastic curve for rectangular beams under uniformly distributed load considers only the bending deformations (Euler-Bernoulli Theory). Also, a comparison is made between the proposed and traditional model of simply supported beams with respect to the rotations in two supports and the maximum deflection of the beam. Also, another comparison is made for beams fixed at both ends with respect to the moments and reactions in the support A, and the maximum deflection of the beam. Results show that the proposed model is greater for simply supported beams in the maximum deflection and the traditional model is greater for beams fixed at both ends in the maximum deflection. Then, the proposed model is more appropriate and safe with respect the traditional model for structural analysis, because the shear forces and bending moments are present in any type of structure and the bending and shear deformations appear.
When an eccentrically braced frame (EBF) is subjected to severe earthquakes, the links experience inelastic deformations while beams outside of the link, braces and columns are designed to remain elastic. To perform reliable inelastic analyses of EBFs sufficient analytical model which can accurately predict the inelastic performance of the links is needed. It is said in the literature that available analytical models for shear links generally predict very well the maximum shear forces and deformations from experiments on shear links, but may underestimate the intermediary values. In this study it is shown that available analytical models do not predict very well the maximum shear forces and deformations too. In this study an analytical model which can accurately predict both maximum and intermediary values of shear force and deformation is proposed. The model parameters are established based on test results from several experiments on shear links. Comparison of available test results with the hysteresis curves obtained using the proposed analytical model established the accuracy of the model. The proposed model is recommended to be used to perform inelastic analyses of EBFs.

Two approximate methods based on mechanism analysis suitable for seismic assessment/design of structural concrete are reviewed. The methods involve use of equal energy concept or equal displacement concept along with appropriate patterns of inelastic deformations to relate structure's maximum lateral displacement to member and plastic deformations. One of these methods (Clough's method), defined here as a ductility-based approach, is examined in detail and a modification for its improvement is suggested. The modification is based on estimation of maximum inelastic displacement using inelastic design response spectra (IDRS) as an alternative to using equal energy concept. The IDRS for demand displacement ductilities are developed for a single degree of freedom model subjected to several accelerograms as functions of response modification factor (R), damping ratios, and strain hardening. The suggested revised methodology involves estimation of R as the ratio of elastic strength demand to code level demand, and determination of design base shear using $R_{design}{\leq}R$ and maximum displacement, determination of plastic displacement using IDRS and subsequent local plastic deformations. The methodology is demonstrated for the case of a 10-story precast wall panel building.
The objective of this study is to estimate the mechanical behavior in bending and the anatomical changes of wood under several deflection rates. Sample specimens of water-saturated Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) were stressed to rupture under several deflection rates. Mechanical properties of wood such as modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture and stress at proportional limit, and anatomical changes affected by deflection rates were estimated. Microscopic observations on compression side of the test specimens when the specimen was loaded to rupture were carried out by the SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The results are summarized as follows: 1. The mechanical properties of wood were affected by variations of the deflection rates. The modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR) and stress at proportional limit were in proportion to the logarithm of deflection rates. 2. The deflection of wood at rupture in bending increased as deflection rates decreased. 3. The variations of the microscopic deformations of sample specimens were closely related to the deflection of wood at rupture. In case of largely deflected wood by maximum bending load, severe and abundant microscopic deformations were observed.

During the last decade several different methods have been proposed for the estimation of thermal deformations in the line heating process. These are mainly based on the assumption of residual strains in the heat-affected zone or simulated relations between heating conditions and residual deformations. However these results were restricted in the application from the too simplified heating conditions or the shortage of the data. The purpose of this paper is to develop a simulator of thermal deformation in the line heating using the artificial neural network. Two neural network predicting the maximum temperature and deformations at the heating line are studied. Deformation data from the line heating experiments are used for learning data for the network. It was observed that thermal deformation predicted by the neural network correlate well with the experimental result.
Supporting method of a Temporary retaining wall for underground excavation project are adopted by systems of strut, anchor, nail, raker, etc. Strut system and Raker system of these methods are mostly used preloading jack to minimize deformations of retaining wall. We determinate efficient preloading to analysis these strut-preloadings, deformations of retaining wall, axial forces, and etc.. This study is analysed that preloading applied 0%, 10%, 20%, 30%, ...., 100% for strut and raker installed by CIP temporary retaining wall. This study results that adequate preloadings were determined to analysis correlations of preloading, deformations of wall, maximum bending moment, axial force of strut, and displacement of surrounding.

In this study, experiments of welding deformation considering dog-pieces setting were performed to assess the effect of dog-pieces on welding deformations quantitatively and an analysis method of welding deformations considering dog-pieces was proposed. Experimental results show the relationship between welding deformations and dog-pieces setting quantitatively. The maximum reduction of welding deformation was measured as 74%. The proposed numerical analysis method to predict welding deformations is one of thermal elasto-plastic analyses using a circular heat flux and finite elements model and has been verified through experiments of welding deformation. The proposed analysis method is expected to be used in a variety of fields as an analysis tool to assess or establish guidelines for a proper use of dog-pieces.
Different methods exist for the estimation of thermaldeformation of plates in the line heating process. These are based on the assumption of residual strains in the heat-affected zone, known as the method of inherent strains, or simulated relations between heating conditions and residual deformations. The purpose of this paper is to develop a simulator of thermal deformation in the line heating, using the artificial neural network. Curvature deformations for the plate-forming are investigated, which can be used as a prime deformation parameter in the process. The curvature of plates are calculated using the approximation of plate surface by NURBS. Line heating experiments for 11 specimens of different thickness and heating conditions were performed. Two neural networks predicting the maximum temperature and curvature deformations at the heating line are studied. It was concluded that the thermal deformations predicted by the neural network can be used in a line heating simulator, which is considered an attractive and practical alternative to the existing methods.

This study has designed and evaluated the safety of watertight damper for Offshore Rigs. The watertight damper is an improved design for conventional DN 350 butterfly valve. Numerical analysis has been performed to investigate the safety factor and seat leakage of the designed 3-type disk dampers. The structure analysis results present the deformations, the equivalent stresses and the safety factor. It was confirmed that the designed disk, rib-disk and streamlined disk of watertight damper are safe enough in maximum operating pressure of 0.98MPa. The results show that the disk damper had the smallest maximum deformations and stress among 3-type disk dampers and the safety factor was 4.3. Therefore it is confirmed that the disk damper has the most excellent strength. Also linear static structural analysis was individually conducted for disk and body. The results show that the maximum disk deformation was larger than the body deformation, Therefore the disk damper is causes no seat leakage.
