Evaluation of Interlayer Shear Properties and Bonding Strengths of a Stress-Absorbing Membrane Interlayer and Development of a Predictive Model for Fracture Energy (덧씌우기 응력흡수층에 대한 전단, 부착강도 평가 및 파괴에너지 예측모델 개발)

  • PURPOSES : A geo-grid pavement, e.g., a stress-absorbing membrane interlayer (SAMI), can be applied to an asphalt-overlay method on the existing surface-pavement layer for pavement maintenance related to reflection cracking. Reflection cracking can occur when a crack in the existing surface layer influences the overlay pavement. It can reduce the pavement life cycle and adversely affect traffic safety. Moreover, a failed overlay can reduce the economic value. In this regard, the objective of this study is to evaluate the bonding properties between the rigid pavement and a SAMI by using the direct shear test and the pull-off test. The predicted fractural energy functions with the shear stress were determined from a numerical analysis of the moving average method and the polynomial regression method. METHODS : In this research, the shear and pull-off tests were performed to evaluate the properties of mixtures constructed using no interlayer, a tack-coat, and SAMI with fabric and without fabric. The lower mixture parts (describing the existing pavement) were mixed using the 25-40-8 joint cement-concrete standard. The overlay layer was constructed especially using polymer-modified stone mastic asphalt (SMA) pavement. It was composed of an SMA aggregate gradation and applied as the modified agent. The sixth polynomial regression equation and the general moving average method were utilized to estimate the interlayer shear strength. These numerical analysis methods were also used to determine the predictive models for estimating the fracture energy. RESULTS : From the direct shear test and the pull-off test results, the mixture bonded using the tack-coat (applied as the interlayer between the overlay layer and the jointed cement concrete) had the strongest shear resistance and bonding strength. In contrast, the SAMI pavement without fiber has a strong need for fractural energy at failure. CONCLUSIONS : The effects of site-reflection cracking can be determined using the same tests on cored specimens. Further, an empirical-mechanical finite-element method (FEM) must be done to understand the appropriate SAMI application. In this regard, the FEM application analy pavement-design analysis using thesis and bonding property tests using cored specimens from public roads will be conducted in further research.

Strength Analysis for the Plate System of the Mark III Cargo Containment (Mark III 방열 판 구조물의 파손 강도 평가에 관한 연구)

  • Mark III CCS plate is considered in this paper to perform its strength assessment. Mark III CCS plate is designed and constructed by stacking various non-metallic engineering materials such as plywood, triplex and reinforced PU foam that are supported by series of mastic upon inner steel hull structure. From the viewpoint of structural analysis, this plated structure is treated as a laminated anisotropic structure. Commercially available general purpose finite element analysis programs such as MSC PATRAN and MARC are used to develop the finite element (FE) model of the Mark III CCS plate. Because of the characteristics of LNG cargo that the Mark III CCS plate deals with, it is subjected to a wide range of temperature variations, i.e. about $-163^{\circ}C$ to $20^{\circ}C$. Different material properties of the Mark III CCS plate at these temperature levels are considered in the FE model. Using the developed FE model, strength assessment procedure is developed incorporating various anisotropic failure criteria such as Hashin, Hill, Hoffman, Maximum stress and Tsai-Wu. The strength assessment is performed within the initial failure state of the Mark III CCS plate and, as a result, failure details such as failure locations and loads are identified.

The Mechanical Properties of SMA Concrete Mixture Using Steel Slag Aggregate (제철 슬래그 골재를 이용한 SMA 혼합물의 역학적 특성)

  • In order to replace mineral aggregate used as road pavement materials with steel slag aggregate, this present study evaluated mechanical properties of SMA Concrete mixtures using steel slag aggregate as oxidized slag from electric furnace in iron works. The variables of this experiment are the aggregate type of mineral and steel slag and the sieve sized of 10mm and 13mm. The physical properties inclu ding the specific gravity and absorption rate etc. of the slag aggregate mixtu res satisfied the KS standard as asphalt mixtu re. As a resu lt of evalu ating the mechanical properties of the asphalt mixtures, the optimum asphalt content of the slag aggregate mixtures were lower than that of the mineral aggregate mixtures, but other quality standards were all satisfied. In the deformation strength evaluation, the slag aggregate mixtures were measu red slightly higher than that of the mineral aggregate mixtu res, and the dynamic stability test satisfied the 2,000pass/mm standard value in all specimens. And, the moduli of resilient of the slag aggregate mixtures showed an improved value compared with the mineral aggregate mixtures. Therefore, as the resilient rate of the slag aggregate mixtures improved, it is speculated that there will be an effect of improving public performance according to the repeated traffic load of the vehicle.

Evaluation of Thermal Performance and Mechanical Properties in the Cryogenic Environment of Basalt Fiber Reinforced Polyurethane Foam (현무암 섬유 보강 폴리우레탄폼의 열적 성능 및 극저온 환경에서의 기계적 특성 평가)

  • LNG CCS which is a special type of cargo hold operated at -163℃ for transporting liquefied LNG is composed of a primary barrier, plywood, insulation panel, secondary barrier, and mastic. Currently, glass fiber is used to reinforce polyurethane foam. In this paper, we evaluated the possibility of replacing glass fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam with basalt fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam. We conducted a thermal conductivity test to confirm thermal performance at room temperature. To evaluate the mechanical properties between basalt and glass-fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam which is fiber content of 5 wt% and 10 wt%, tensile and an impact test was performed repeatedly. All of the tests were performed at room temperature and cryogenic temperature(-163℃) in consideration of the temperature gradient in the LNG CCS. As a result of the thermal conductivity test, the insulating performance of glass fiber reinforced polyurethane foam and basalt fiber reinforced polyurethane foam presented similar results. The tensile test results represent that the strength of basalt fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam is superior to glass fiber at room temperature, and there is a clear difference. However, the strength is similar to each other at cryogenic temperatures. In the impact test, the strength of PUR-B5 is the highest, but in common, the strength decreases as the weight ratio of the two fibers increases. In conclusion, basalt fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam has sufficient potential to replace glass fiber-reinforced polyurethane foam.
